The 500GB Rugged Triple Interface USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive from LaCie is a rough-and-tumble ready, high-speed, ultra-portable hard drive. In terms of protection, it features the famous orange, rubberized shock-resistant, exterior sleeve, aluminum anti-scratch casing, internal rubber bumpers, and a 1000g shock-resistant hard drive. Built to military specifications, you can be sure that the drive is protected from damage that can occur during daily use. If off, the drive can withstand drops of up to 2 meters.
The drive features a 7200rpm disk speed and can connect to your computer via the super-fast USB 3.0 port or via one of two FireWire 800 ports.* The USB 3.0 port is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and the FireWire 800 ports are backwards compatible with FireWire 400. With the included software suite, you can setup the drive, establish AES 256-bit encryption on the drive, automatically backup your computer's data, and save up to 10GB of data online. The software also includes an Automatic Eco mode that lowers the drive's power consumption by 40% when it's not in use.
Note! * USB 3.0 for Mac is possible if you download the appropriate driver from LaCie and have installed their USB 3.0 Mac-compatible ExpressCard/34 in your computer. See the specs tab for more info as well as LaCie's website

I was not wild about the LaCie ruggeds when they first hit the scene. Inspired by a design from Captain Scarlet seemed to be a bizarre angle to take. At least, if you've SEEN Captain Scarlet. None the less, these little babies are pretty reliable in my experience. They're perfect for downloading footage in dubious locations. They're bus-powered, so if you have a producer that insists on dumping footage in a 15-pass during a company move, these drives will save your skin. Also, if you're shooting somewhere with wonky power. You'll feel comfy passing them off to whomever at the end of the day. I don't really recommend playing hockey or football with them, despite the fun shape and size, but one mustn't treat them like a house of cards either.
The triple interface ensures that you'll be able to use these on whatever crazy computer you're saddled with, be it your own blazing DIT station, or some hand-me-down laptop that a shoe-string budget production slaps in front of you.
I'd buy more of these things.

Unfortunately I have been through 2 of these drives, neither of which lasted more than....well as soon as I received them. Both drives were DOA. Returned both and will probably not order another...ever. Oh and their customer service seemed like it was cumbersome to work with, so I returned it to the store I bought it from.

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple Interface USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive:
As a video professional, I have had the opportunity to use many portable drives to store video files when on a shoot.
In my opinion the Lacie tripple interface is about the best "hand-off" option there is. The qualities I want to see are speed, ease of use, reliability, and quality of design and construction.
When we shoot on SXS or P2 cards we need a good reliable portable storage to hand to the client, the LaCie aside from being well made gives the client the option of using USB, Fire wire 400 or 800 to get the files into their NLE.
Time after time this is the drive clients request.

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple Interface USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive:
USE: Pro use for large shoot files and dubbing back the whole edit. I like the 7200RPM drives and the triple interface is handy for choices - including if you can only find obne working cable or one port goes bad. We have purchased close to 100 of these Rugged drives and have very very few failures. I have one with a bad FW800 port but since the others work, NP. I have some that get "old" but basically these rfeally hold up. The orange wrap around is supposed to be removable but I have seldom taken off the orange bumper. It just helps to absorb the shock of a fall and it nice to grip in your hand or non slip on a table. A little heavier than some drives but sturdy and they don't tend to slip and fall off a table.

I use these when i shoot abroad, perfect for downloading from P2 cards at the end of the day when on short trips (I leave the heavy 2 or 3TB drives back at our main base of operations, and copy from the 500GB drives to the big drives when we are back at the ranch). Appreciate the stability -- have taken them in just the past 6 months on multiple trips to sizzling hot rural Bulgaria, springtime Berlin, deep frozen wintry Maine. Never a problem! Just basically reliable storage and so light i can take 3 of them in my carry-on and still have room for the obligatory English mystery novel, makeup kit, MacBook Pro, and healthy snacks bag. Excellent

Great for dumping footage while on shoots and for storage back at the office. It's rugged design is a godsend for those who have a habit of accidently knocking over drives with their feet or off their desk. Nothing is worse than having your hard-earned files disappear because you bumped a drive. All-around great product.

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple Interface USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive:
I bought this hard drive to back up footage while I was shooting a documentary. It was great because at the end of a long day of shooting, I could dump all the footage onto the drive. I needed a sturdy drive because we were traveling around a lot and it was going to be in a backpack much of the time. Pros: Sturdy, reliable thus far, fairly fast transfer rate.Cons: The drive can be a little slow when reading files. I made the mistake of editing off of it once and it's not really great for that. From now on, I will probably use it just to dump footage onto and then use something else for editing.

I use this portable hard drive when on location getting assets for multi media productions. Not only can it handle my photographic raw files easily. It can also handle my movie files quickly and reliably.
In fact, when on location, I edit my work on my laptop, keeping all the asset files on the Lacie portable drive. The workflow is seamless.

I work with video editing, video post and animation an very often have to move to different places with my projects, so this is an excellent way to, not only transport heavy volumes of digital footage, so you can avoid manipulating your desktop hard drives (like in my case) but also work directly in the drive, because of its high speed and stability. I've been working with this model of portable hd, and with the LaCie brand for many years and never have any problem. Is an excellent choice.

I use this drive to record sensitive acoustic music, often it sits only 3-4-5 feet from the music source with no problem of acoustically bleeding into the mics.
It's the quietest drive I've ever used, it's the most dependable drive I've ever used (NEVER had one fail after 5 years and other drives crashing left and right - NOT THIS ONE!).
I'm thinking to slowly replace all other drives I own with Lacie Rugged - just great. And it almost looks good! It's actually nice looking if you get the non-orange rubber covers, but at least I can find the orange ones anywhere I've put it down.
