It features H.264 High Profile (level 4.1) video compression to offer high video quality at lower bit rates.

Downscaling to lower resolutions is possible via a built-in scaler that allows for output streaming resolutions of 1080p/PsF, 1080i, 720p, and 480p. Based on available IP bandwidth, you can choose target bit rates (HD - 2 to 4Mbps, SD – sub-1Mbps) and a video resolution as required. With small size and compact design, the Cube 250/450 HDMI Encoder/Decoder can be mounted to a rail system, cage, hotshoe, or camera baseplate. In addition, the encoder/decoder can be used with camera systems such as Red One, Arri Alexa, Panavision Genesis, Canon 5Dii, and Canon 7D. The Cube encoder/decoder requires 2.5 W DC power.

Comments about Teradek Cube 250/450 HDMI Encoder/Decoder:

As I own a steadicam and using primarily DSLRs in my projects, this product seems like the best gadget I should get. The idea of Cube is great and very exciting but I would like to tell everyone the truth that it's not yet the magic we were once hoped for. In reality, it's really not.It has limitations that you should consider:1. It's not very reliable, in this case I mean it takes some very very long time for the transmitter and the receiver to sync each other and show us some image on the screen. Im talking about roughly 1.30-2 minutes starting from turning on the camera, powering up both cubes, wait the confirmed green light and wait for the picture to show up then become stable enough to monitor. It may doesn't sound a lot but IM telling you it's the most stressful 1-2 minutes of your life once you are a videoman working on a set with a furious director. Your worst nightmare is when the director shouts "Where's the [*] picture!!" especially when everything seems right but you just can not tell what's happening and can only stare at the cube and wish for miracle to happen which sometimes miracle just never comes. I have to restart the whole process again and hope for another try of miracle. This is the reality.2. The latency is still a big issue. I've already set my caching value down to the lowest point as suggested in the manual to get he lowest latency but still it's not up to the point where it is acceptable by clients. This is the reality.I once offered the cube to a rental house to just to test in real set after I had done some experiments and came up with the best all-round setting to me (cube 250&450 @ 720p 2.5 mb, caching value 70, infrastructure mode, i did played around with the configurations and came up with various results) without charging them yet. The respond I received was "please return them back to the store where you purchased them from" I was shocked!!! . They've only used it just for 1 scene the whole day and never felt like risking to use cube again. His word still in my head mow and that's the whole reason why Im writing this review.Although, I decided not to return the product just yet. I think I can still use the cube for fun with small projects of my own or when working with familiar and friendly director. I know that I'd better not charge people for the cube at all. I guess I'll just keep the cube this way and look forward for some other products for the real professional use to replace my cube in the near future. The bottom line : Cube is great when not in serious professional use so i should not recommend people to invest this much if not for professional use.
