Product Highlights

  • 3.5mm Output
  • Records to SD Cards
  • USB Connectivity
  • AA Batteries
  • Physical Knobs
  • Integrated Stereo Mic

The DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio from TASCAM brings all of the great features of the Portastudio line of products into a compact unit that's smaller than a paperback book. Ideal for the traveling musician, the DP-004 provides 4 tracks of CD-quality digital audio recording, as well as mixing and editing features.

Rather than using confusing layered menus, the DP-004 provides real knobs for tactile, intuitive control. The unit uses standard SD flash memory cards to record up to 2 audio sources at once. You can use the on-board stereo microphone to record a performance, or connect instruments or microphones to the 2 1/4" mic/line inputs. A 3.5mm output is provided for connecting headphones or speakers.

A bounce feature lets you consolidate tracks once all 4 are filled in order to make room for more overdub layers. An autopunch feature lets you fix problems, and an undo function allows you to cancel out any edits. You can use the knobs to set levels and pan, and then record the mix to a dedicated stereo master track. You can transfer your tracks and mixes to your computer by using the USB 2.0 connection, or by removing the SD card and using a separate card reader.

I bought this recently as a once active musician who still has ideas but little time to record them - I even have a digital studio set up - but I wanted something I could take between home and kid and the studio and work and easily put things down. As a long ago user of the Teac and tascam Porta Studios (cassette 4 track) I was totally thrilled to get this. Its as easy to use as the Porta One was, but with phenomenal sound quality and unbelievably low price. I recently used it to record a live session and the stereo mics get a separation and mix that you will not believe. I sound like a shill - campaigning for the manufacturer, but believe me - this thing is incredible! The small size (fits in any bag - the size of a paperback book) and the manual pots and minimal scrolling to choose functions are why I chose this, as well as the ability to dump tracks to computer - Cubase - which I already use (tho I have not dumped any tracks as yet) - I am certain that the quality at which this records (with line inputs - not necessarily for live band recording) is perfectly usable for any studio production. The only down side I can see is that the batteries seem to run out pretty quick - maybe after 4 hours or so of use, so I'd get the AC power adapter.

This unit partitions the SD card so that one partition is visible to your computer, the other is used by the recorder. You must convert each file, in real time, and transfer it to the other partition for the computer to see it. This unit does not record WAV files. It records in a internally used format that must be converted into WAV after the recording is complete. So: If I record a one hour track, then I must replay it again in real time, an hour, to mark the beginning and the end, Play it again (in real time) to re-record it as a master. Then convert the Master into a WAV and then transfer it to the other partition to get the audio file onto the computer. So it will take me over two hours of work after I record a one hour, one track, speech to get the audio onto my computer before I can even start editing and preparing the audio for distribution. I could save an hour by marking the endpoint and mastering it as soon as I stop recording, but I don't have an hour for mastering in between recordings. I wanted to record, plug the unit into my computer and get the audio file off the unit, but you can't do that with this device. I am quite surprised by all the good reviews. I downloaded the manual and watched all the tutorials before I purchased this unit and nothing prepared me for how this worked. I am very disappointed. If I'm doing something wrong, I'd sure like to contact me and let me know what it is.

Great addition to my filming equipment. Very portable and easy to use. Sound quality is good for its size and price, however, it is not perfect. Useful for some things and not for others. But overall a great piece of equipment.

Comments about Tascam DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio Portable Recorder/Mixer:

FIrst, it's super portable - very easy to use - sounds excellent and most importantly, no "effects" or frills. It has built in metronome and tuner and you can easily "bounce" tracks and make a solid recording in this unit about 1/2 the size of a shoe box.

great product - B&H did an amazing job getting this shipped - fast, and website is easy to use. The dp-004 works great and is easy to use, no problems recording at all with a condenser mic for vox and the built in mics for acoustic to 2 different tracks. You can easily master and send out a wave of the whole song or export the tracks for use in another program.

Comments about Tascam DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio Portable Recorder/Mixer:

I started using the DP-004 for creating CD quality files from my analog archives (for example open reels tape). I very much like the ability to digitize and store on the multi-track storage and then have the ablity to review and create a master that I can keep on my digital merdia server.

This is a great product for what I want to do.

If you look for a simple recording equipment for a "plug and use" one pass digital recording, you might find the use too complex. Buy this equipment if you need its features and you will enjoy it.

I cannot comment on the built-in microphones as I did not make serious tests them them.

I was really looking forward to getting the DP004 digital recorder. Then I watched a tutor video. After writing two sheets of instructions(!!!) I said, forget it.
I understand digital is going to be faded out. Its too bad tape cassette recorders are gone, because they were so simple to use-turn it on, plug in, press record and go-Ive already ordered another item from B&H-a real cassette recorder. Much better choice for me.
              Thanks GS

Comments about Tascam DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio Portable Recorder/Mixer:

I bought this product hoping to use it for recording interview audio on documentary-style productions. Unfortunately, I don't think this is a very appropriate application, for a few reasons:

                - Features I will never use, ie any editing functions.
                - Miserably long save/write times for long recording sessions.
                - UI that seems a more geared towards recording one layer at a time, rather than multiple inputs at the same time.
                - I found that the inputs wouldn't accept any converters from XLR or stereo mini--got really, really muffled signal. even went out and bought new ones to make sure it wasn't the converters. As this product wasn't appropriate in the other ways above, I didn't investigate the issue further than that.

I'd say that for a musician or small band looking to be DIY, this is a decent tool for the price point. Fairly impressed by the built-in speakers. Manual is pretty comprehensive, and the UI isn't impossible--especially if you're just plugging in a guitar and going to town.

Interviewers, beware--this is not your best option.

Great little recorder for practice, or for just about any application that calls for multitrack. I use mine to record vocals and build 6 and 8 part pieces with two or three voices. Very portable and can work in tandem with just about any equipment.

Comments about Tascam DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio Portable Recorder/Mixer:

this pocket studio is worth the money. There are a lot of directions, but clearly written and by playing around with it, I got to understand how it works. I really can't think of cons. I have a large recorder Tape)that sat out for about two years without using it. Had to hook up a mike with phantom power And never got comfortable using it. This pocket studio is a lot easier to learn to use

Relatively easy to get going - adding voiceover and music to video and pan-still captures for historic 5-7 minute bits for the AZ-centennial (2012).Upon actually reading the 110 page manual, this machine gives me more functionality than I can eat!Our old system was based on the 4-track Tascam cassette system from 20 years ago - which worked well once you really learned it. The DP-004 was cheaper and waay better, and 80 bucks cheaper, if memory serves.

Does everything I want a portable 4-track to do. The built in microphones are surprisingly sensitive. Easy to start using, and has plenty of convenient features like a built-in metronome, tuner, and the ability to skip to the beginning of the song or to the last recording position. No complaints whatsoever. Now I just have to get better at playing guitar...

I recently purchased the Tascam pocket studio. I am really happy with how good it works and how easy it is to figure it out! Im in a band but we are all too busy to get together to write songs. This device allows me to record my ideas and then give the memory card to the other guys(who also have the Pocket studio ) so they record they're parts.
