Product Highlights
  • 2TB for Time Machine Backup
  • 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless Router
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • USB Printer and Hard Drive Sharing
  • Simultaneous Dual-Band Operation

The Time Capsule from Apple is an Internet router with a built-in hard drive, designed for use with OS X Leopard's Time Machine backup software. It can backup your Mac over Wi-Fi, ensuring that your data is always protected. It even features a USB port for printer and hard disk sharing.

The router allows you to share your Internet connection between several computers via the draft 802.11n wireless protocol. It also features three standard 10/100/1000Mbps RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The router is fully backwards compatible with legacy 802.11a/b/g devices.

The Time Capsule features a firewall to protect you from malicious software that can attack your computer from the Internet, as well as wireless security to insure that your data remains private. It can serve as an Internet router for both Macs and PCs.

Backup

Backing up is something we all know we should do, but often don't. And while disaster is a great motivator, now it doesn't have to be. Because with Time Capsule, the nagging need to back up has been replaced by automatic, constant protection. And even better, it all happens wirelessly, saving everything important, including your sanity
Time Capsule includes a wireless 2TB hard drive designed to work with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard. Just set Time Capsule as the designated backup drive for Time Machine, and that's it. Depending on how much data you have, your initial backup with Time Capsule could take overnight or longer. After it completes, only changed files are backed up -- automatically, wirelessly, and in the background. So you never have to worry about backing up again
Have multiple Mac computers in your house? Time Capsule can back up and store files for each Leopard- and Snow Leopard-based Mac on your wireless network. No longer do you have to attach an external drive to each Mac every time you want to back up. Time Capsule spares you the work
Time Capsule is your one place for backing up everything. Its massive 2TB server-grade hard drive gives you all the capacity and safety you need. So whether you have 250 songs or 250,000 songs to back up, room is the last thing you'll run out of

Wireless

More than just a wireless hard drive, Time Capsule is also a full-featured AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n technology. Experience a high-speed wireless network and a breakthrough way to back up all the Mac computers on your network. All in one device
You can rest assured that Time Capsule works with other certified 802.11n devices. And it's compatible with Mac computers and PCs that use 802.11a, b, or g technologies, as well as wireless devices such as iPhone, iPod touch, and Apple TV
Some Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4GHz wireless band, including iPhone, iPod touch, and devices using 802.11b/g. Others can use either 2.4GHz or the higher-speed 5GHz band, such as the latest 802.11n-based Mac computers and Apple TV. Instead of choosing one of the bands, Time Capsule operates simultaneously on both bands, and your multiband devices automatically use the best available band
It's easy to allow guests to use your Internet connection without sharing your password or giving them access to the rest of your network. Simply enable the guest networking feature using the AirPort Utility application and create a separate Wi-Fi network just for your friends. You can set up this guest network with a different password or with none at all. Your primary network -- including your printer, attached drives, or other devices -- remains secure
Say you're traveling and you need a file on your Time Capsule back at home. If you're a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, no problem. You can access all the files on your Time Capsule drive over the Internet. Simply register your Time Capsule with your MobileMe account, and its drive appears in the Finder sidebar of your Mac just like any other attached drive. It's like having your own personal file server wherever you go
The included USB port is great for sharing a printer throughout your wireless network. Time Capsule and the Bonjour networking technology let everyone in the house or office -- Mac and PC users alike -- take advantage of one centrally located printer. And if you want to share both a printer and an additional hard drive, you can. Just connect a USB hub to Time Capsule. Whatever the combination, Time Capsule divides and conquers
Time Capsule with Time Machine in Leopard or Snow Leopard is the ideal backup solution. But that doesn't mean Mac OS X Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can't enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because Time Capsule mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily

The router is Fast with the 801.11 N signal. Noticeably faster than the Linksys 801.11 G router it replaced. 2 Terabytes is Huge for storage. 3 terabyte version of this product isn't worth the additional $200 price tag.

The set up was easy, but it did require a call to Comcast for them to bounce my signal. The router was was stuck on the Yellow light until Comcast bounced the signal...then it went green. Easy fix...

I've researched this product and it was rated to have a faster WRITE speed than it did a READ speed on the hard drive. This is because apple optimized this to write fast for backing up your mac computer. The read speed is not as efficient as an independent hard drive might be, but by no means should this deter you from making this purchase.

If you demand top of the line performance for streaming movies and music, you can always purchase an additional hard drive that has top of the line READ speed and plug it into one of the 4 network ports on the Time Capsule. I'm not saying you NEED to buy an additional drive to stream movies...I'm just telling you that this until is made for backing up your computer and WRITES faster than it READS. The READ speed is not terrible, it's just not top of the line...because this is backup device.

The 4 network input ports can also be used to add a printer. This means you can make any printer Wireless. This means that any device you can plug into the router will be wireless and available on your home network.

One more thing I like about this router is the fact that it has 3 levels of security. 1 password for the hard drive, 2nd password for the administration of the main wireless network and a 3rd password for a GUEST wireless network. That means my friends can log into my wireless guest network on their phones/computers when they come over and I don't have to worry about anyone having access to my hard drive or hacking my computer because they're in my network. Sweet.

One more thing on this unit. I can use my windows lap top on the Guest network, but it is not able to access the main wireless network or have the option to get backed up on the Time Capsule. The backup functionality is only available for Apple products (mac computers, iPods, iPads, iPhones).

Overall, I'm Very happy with this purchase. Go get one. You know you want it. It's worth the $$$.

I am a Windows user and wanted a backup drive that I could use to backup my files and access them from anywhere, but I found out after installing it that the Time Capsule only works as a local share drive. I was hoping for a web interface, but it is not available, at least not yet. The Wi-Fi router features are limited. I tried using the Wi-Fi expander features with my D-Link router and it did not work. As a matter of fact, I ended up disabling the Wi-Fi on the Time Capsule all together and connected it to my DLink router using an Ethernet cable because I constantly kept losing connection to it and had to reboot it every time to regain access. The current latest firmware running on it still offers you to connect to MobileMe which was replaced by iCloud and the iCloud doesn't seem to be supported by the Time Capsule at this time. Why would you connect to either one? your guess is good as mine, but I tried to connect to MobileMe since they offer the option to see what it could offer. I was also hoping to backup my iPhone and iPod Touch to the Time Capsule instead of the iCloud, but it doesn't seem to be any option to do that at this time. Overall the only thing that Apple impressed me with so far when it came to the Time Capsule was with the nice packaging. I am hopping Apple releases a firmware update that would make the Time Capsule 2TB worth [$]. Right now I don't see it any better than sharing a drive on a Windows workstations. Of course, I keep in consideration the value of the 2TB of storage space.

    Great Product

Comments about Apple Time Capsule (2TB):

I had been backing up to an external hard drive for about a year, but this is so much easier! Always in sync and backed up. With the bonus of being a wireless N router. Very easily extended my current wireless network to provide better coverage for our entire house. And to top it all off, the price at B&H was amazing!

Comments about Apple Time Capsule (2TB):

This Apple Time Capsule arrived very quickly from B and H Photo, and at a good price I might add. Our first Time Capsule lasted about 6 years with no problems at all, it was the 500 gb. It recently started to act up and have to be restarted, didn't know how many times it would do that without starting at all one day. The fresh 2 TB backup went flawlessly and now we have wifi and backup once again. Will troubleshoot the 500gb when time allows, power supply seems to be the symptoms, not sure yet. I know this one is behind the times but for our machines it is fine. Would certainly recommend this product to all who have Mac computers.

What is not so great, it did not work. It was unable to connect to the internet while my humble cheap router did. The back up really never happened as it kept hanging.

I returned it to B&H and they were very helpful. I would always purchase other items from B&H given such positive experience now and in the past.

Also, since I got last years model it also saved a bunch of money:)

This is my 2nd Time Capsule, I have a 1TB and this 2TB is twice as good and I only paid $ for it, I realize it is the older model, but it works like a champ backs up my MacBook and I have no worries, it just silently does it and I am glad I was able to get it at such a good price.

REPLACEMENT FOR A 0.5 T THAT HAS BEEN IN USE FOR 5 YRS. DID NOT WANT TO SPRING THE EXTRA CASH FOR THE LATEST VERSION AS I STILL ONLY HAVE A '09 MAC BOOK PRO. IT FACILITATES THE PORTABLE HD BACK-UPS THAT THE OLD ONE REFUSED TO PERFORM DUE TO SIZE LIMITS.

Comments about Apple Time Capsule (2TB):

As I have a wireless router from my internet provider, I was hoping to use this mainly as an airport express (extending wifi network)+ wireless hard drive for Time Machine. I was on the phone with apple support for an hour at least 1) to learn that it needs to be connected to an ethernet cable all the time, and 2) to set it up and deal with its competing with my internet provider's router.
After the set-up, it works fine, with these caveats:
                                    1. I have to continuously force my computer/devices to prioritize this router over my internet provider's for Time Machine backups;
                                    2. Since, as a router, this Time Capsule should be connected to an ethernet cable all the time, it gets complicated not to leave it all the time "on," with a green-status light strong enough to let you safely find your way through a 700 square space at 2 in the morning.

I already had the airport extreme but we decided to go with the time capsule because its such a convenient way to back up our macs. I do professional photography and my wife is working on her masters, so any lost data would be catastrophic!! I will say, the initial back up takes quite awhile but after that your system speed should return to normal. I would like to see apple add a way that you can store music on the drive and use airplay to access it through out the house like many other wireless hard drives available. All in all its an apple so it works..
