The Panasonic AG-AC7 Shoulder-Mount AVCHD Camcorder is a highly affordable Full HD camera that enables a truly professional style of operation. Professional projects require stable operation over long periods of time and manual control over the picture, with smooth adjustments. High-def or not, most undersized handheld camcorders often will not fit the bill.
The AC7's shoulder-mount design, its relatively low power draw from the included long-life battery, and selectable-bit-rate AVCHD recording to high-capacity SD/SDHC/SDXC cards all serve to facilitate long days of shooting events, weddings, news, and anything else that requires you to be on the move, ready to shoot, camera on shoulder. It's also perfect for houses of worship and educational institutions that teach manual settings and a professional style of camera operation.
For ease in completing both SD and HD projects, the AG-AC7 camera features AVCHD recording at 1920 x 1080 and 720 x 480, both at 60i. The built-in 16.7x (optical) / 23x (Intelligent) zoom lens starts out nice and wide at 35.8mm (35mm equivalent), so indoor shooting does not become a challenge to see how deeply into the corner you can smash yourself. With a large grip and zoom lever and a large, easy-to-hold manual focus ring, you've got accessible, precise controls, and a zebra pattern assists you in setting exposure. In addition to extensive manual controls, there's also Intelligent Auto (iA) and Hybrid optical image stabilization, providing the high-tech help you need to ensure smooth, reliably crisp & clear capture of Full HD video.

First off, remember that this is a [$] (list) camera. If you are expecting too much just because it is a Panasonic AG series AVCHD, then you will be very disappointed. So I'm going to say that it is a good camera FOR THE MONEY. I bought it to try out as a "Camera 2" to my big 'ol P2 camera. So far it looks like I'm going to keep it, as it will serve this purpose. I would not use this as a primary camera because of it's limitations.Marketed as a prosumer model, it is much more "sumer" than "pro". The first thing I noticed was how light it is. Upon un-boxing I thought, "Did I just buy a toy?"I shot a test with it, and it looked pretty good. However, low-light was really grainy, but I don't do low-light, so this isn't an issue for me. I also got some lines while swaying side-to-side very swiftly, but this wasn't a deal-breaker for me. I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality of the built in stereo mic. However, I didn't expect much. It still isn't going to give me the sound quality that I need. I will rarely, if ever, use audio from this camera (except for syncing purposes). There is a mini mic input, but I am doubtful about the quality of the audio section. It spits out MTS files, so they require third party conversion for me to edit in FCP. The manual controls are there, but configured in a way that might annoy a pro who is accustomed to finding controls in the usual places. You have to use a touch screen to adjust many of the settings. It is designed to be more user-friendly in full-manual mode. I must say that the intelligent auto-functions are a step or two above what you will find in a full-on consumer targeted camcorder. So this thing is really basic. It gives you a decent picture with no frills, limited connectivity, and basic operation. While I would not suggest this to someone wanting to start out as a wedding videographer, or serious hobbyist, it might be a good first camera for a student. Or, if you are like me, and you need a camera 2 that doesn't have to record audio or timecode, this might be a good buy. Of course, if you are going to be super-nit-picky about image quality, you are looking in the wrong price range. I usually put "B Roll" style effects on my camera 2 stuff, so my camera 2 doesn't have to be perfect.I think it begs the question, "Why not just go out and get a DSLR rig?"It still costs less than a good DSLR, handles like a video camera, and doesn't present you with typical DSLR issues like the "wavy" effect when moving, down-conversion problems, etc. You also get a video-camera style interface without dropping another 2-3 grand on mounts, handles, monitors, eyepieces, etc. For me, the image also matches my Camera 1 a lot better than a DSRL can.If I were NOT rating this camera in the context of it's price range, I would probably give it 2 stars. But for the money, and considering my specific applications, I'll go with 4.

Well at first glance, this camera may have a professional appearance, but don't let its looks fool you! It's merely a mid-range consumer camcorder in a professional body. First off, the mic input is in a bad spot. And by that I mean, ITS RIGHT ABOVE THE FREAKING LENS! I'd love to know what engineering genius came up with that one! If you wanted to make the mic input easily accessible, why not put it under the lens so the wire doesn't drape over the lens hood when you plug it in?! Also, this camera has a single 1/4 inch CMOS sensor in it. If I remember correctly, the consumer level HC-X900 which is currently $[$] on B&H has 3 1/4.1 CMOS sensors, a Leica Dicomar lens with a 1.5 aperature, shoots in 1080/60P at 28mbps, 1080/60i, AND 1080/24P (although it does use a 2:3 pulldown, at least it has this feature!!) The AC7 an the other hand only shoots in 60i at 17mbps(would it KILL you to at least make it 24mbps?!) has no progressive frame rates, has a small lens on it that does not bare the Leica brand, and it only has 1 cmos sensor...By the way, it costs $406 more than the HC-x900!!! So your paying $406 for a hallow shell around a sub par consumer hd camcorder that doesn't even have as many features as Panasonics top of the line HD camcorder that has more features and costs less?!! Sorry, I'm calling BS on this one. Thats my 2 cents. Your welcome.

I really like the HD video quality. However, the audio input quality is not the greatest in my opinion and the housing is all plastic and not the best. Overall, for the price, I would recommend it as a good entry level camera.

Comments about Panasonic AG-AC7 Shoulder-Mount AVCHD Camcorder:
This unit is a pretty awesome cam for first-time filmakers.
I'm using this to film in-house commercials for our company, and using the recommending lighting accessories (from BH) and their lighting tutorial, we blasted out our first 2 minute commercial in less than a week.
The camera itself is SUPER SUPER easy to use. The iA (full auto feature) does a nice job of capturing quickie shots in HD... and going to the slightly advanced manual mode for lighting wasn't too scary.
I love the plug-in audio jack - made adding an extended mic boom easy and accessories for sound so much easier to deal with.
The ONLY caveat is that the LCD screen doesn't always match what you are actually filming. It leans toward lighter/sharper... so mentally keep that in mind as you make your shots.
The workaround is to tweak your movie lighting settings when you go into production (we use iMovie). No biggie and results are still HD worthy! :)

Comments about Panasonic AG-AC7 Shoulder-Mount AVCHD Camcorder:
I bought this specifically to create bird behavior videos on a tight budget. My critical requirements were HD quality, shoulder-mount, eye-piece viewfinder plus a good zoom range. I've visited canyons, wetlands and wildlife refuges intensively over the last 10 days for the purpose stated, and this is what I've discovered.
It is indeed HD format and the quality is good provided that you use the manual setting (not iA or intelligent auto)because the auto WB is not so good.
The eyepiece is the biggest letdown - incredibly uncomfortable and difficult to align with my eyes. As somebody else commented, it should have been able to pull out to the left about another inch. I use glasses and this camera wasn't designed for specs. I tried it without wearing glasses and it's much better - but of course I can't see what I'm going to shoot without my glasses on, so that doesn't help!
The shoulder mount is OK although I'm inclined to think that it could be greatly improved without additional cost.
The 23x zoom range is good for birding videos.
I've found the audio pick-up in the outdoors to be almost non-existent and so will need to buy a good shotgun mic - but that's what I expected to find, so I don't regard that as a real negative.
I'm concerned about the build quality which seems too flimsy for a reasonable life. It is, of course, the lowest cost such camcorder available and that cheapness shows very clearly.
Summarising. The fairly extensive outdoor footage that I have obtained in this trial period is good quality and I'm very happy with that, but the inferior eyepiece has been a constant annoyance and made me lose some sequences. Consequently, since this is still within the 30 days time limit, I shall check other camcorders to see how they perform even though that will mean spending extra money if I change. I gave this camcorder 4 stars because if this is your price range, it gives good video results outdoors.

Comments about Panasonic AG-AC7 Shoulder-Mount AVCHD Camcorder:
I have been using Canon consumer HD camera for several years doing video for my church and editing with Pinnacle. A few months ago, I decided to go pro with a rental Panasonic DV camera but I hate DV so decided to get either flash drive or Hard Drive camera. I chose the AG-AC7 because of the price and the reviews as well. When you take the camera out of the box, the first thing you notice is the ultra light weight, you may mistake it for a display dummy. Give the camera a bigger battery and you can shoot for several hours on a single battery. The camera is very energy efficient. THe pictures are very sharp and the stereo sound from the camera is great. The microphone jack is stereo so when you add an external mic with mono jack, only one speaker will work on your playback on the computer. either use the inbuilt mic or buy a stereo mic. The inbuilt mic is very sensitive, so in a quiet environment, it picks up a few camera sounds as you operate it. The zoom is great and the auto focus responds quickly as you zoom in and out. What I did not like about the camera is the white balance. When you use the auto white balance in a room with both florescent and incandescent lights, the pictures turns yellow as you move close to the incandescent lights but gives you the natural color when you move to where the florescent light is. There are manual white balance settings but they did not help me much probably because am not good at it.Overall, this is a good camera and it is worth the investment. If your wallet is slim like mine, this is a good place to start and in no time your business will pay for the investment. I love the picture quality.

Comments about Panasonic AG-AC7 Shoulder-Mount AVCHD Camcorder:
Video camera has just about everything I need and seems to record well in "medium lowlight" conditions. The high-def is crisp and clean. I am impressed with the zoom magnification. Not quite the best sound with built-in microphone, but it handles remote wireless mikes well. I expected more weight to the package -- which would help reduce jitteriness -- but on the good side the light weight doesn't tire you out as quickly. All in all, I'd recommend this for serious production/documentary work.

Comments about Panasonic AG-AC7 Shoulder-Mount AVCHD Camcorder:
Its picture quality is awesome, the sound is clear but still needs a microphone if you want the best quality for the audio. A powerful zoom very useful and the weight is so low that you can record long periods without problem. The only thing I dislike is that the format of video is very weird and difficult to use in your computer unless you have proper codes or edit in special programs.

If you are just staring out and on a extreme budget this unit will get you buy for a while till your skill level increases. The LCD and viewfinder screens are small...:-( and the viewfinder armature only slides out one half inch. If you are small person in stature the unit will fit you OK perhaps, but if you are say 70inches and taller you will not be using the viewfinder without craning your neck to the right side more than a bit, but then you'll find your own ear will be in the way....dumb design....very uncomfortable...it should slide out further say a minimum of one full inch of travel. Viewfinder screen is very low quality and very very small. Do not let the automatic gain control kick in above 12dB, your footage will take a bad hit and stay away from any of the digital zoom modes as well. Either will make your footage really grainy. The O.I.S feature will cause bands in your footage if you pan too quickly....keep all pans very slow and you'll be good to go. Automatic white balance leaves a lot to be desired - it will change on you during a shot - keep it in manual and set it yourself -period. Unfortunately the Iris/Gain controls are connected to each other. So if you do not trim the camera in the right order you'll mess up your previous settings, it's very silly....

Panasonic offers the AG-AC7. It's just about the cheapest camera with pro-features on the market. I got mine from B&H. The camera looks great, has a nice lense, and shoots AVCHD video at 17mbps. Excellent for event photography or even filmmaking, although you'll have to adjust your frame-rate in post production because the camera only shoots 60i. Still, a nice package for the price, & the shoulder-mount style makes it easy to hold.

The only reason you would buy this HD camera is if you can't afford anything else. It is a step into the HD world. But you get what you pay for. Main housing is made of light weight plastic. Any collision with another object would smash this light weight. That was my first impression. Although it is plastic, I love the lightness of it compared to pre HD cameras and pre LED technology.

The AC7 an the other hand only shoots in 60i at 17mbps(would it KILL you to at least make it 24mbps?!) has no progressive frame rates, has a small lens on it that does not bare the Leica brand, and it only has 1 cmos sensor...By the way, it costs $406 more than the HC-x900!!!
