The silver M. Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.8 Lens from Olympus has been designed for use with Olympus PEN Micro Four Thirds cameras. With an equivalent focal length in the 35mm format of 90mm, this short telephoto lens is ideal for portraits and for low-light shooting. Its extremely wide f/1.8 maximum aperture can produce beautifully shallow depth of field and is very effective in low-light situations. Its Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) function offers ultra-fast, near-silent autofocus for shooting stills and video. Lens construction using extra-high refractive lenses produces excellent contrast and sharpness in stills and video, with chromatic aberration, ghosting and flare minimized.

After buying a Panasonic G3, this has been my first (and to date only) lens purchase. I love it for its fast autofocus, sharpness, the gorgeous colours it captures, and of course the option to stop down to 1.8. It's barely left my camera since I put it on, and although I know this medium telephoto length is mainly seen as a portraits lens, I've been very pleased using it as an all-purpose lens. Of course, it takes stunningly beautiful portraits, but I find the same properties make for gorgeous still lifes. And the short telephoto makes framing landscapes quite interesting, while the wonderful lens captures rich colours and fluid light. I also love that it's very lightweight: in fact, while it's obviously longer than the Panasonic 20mm 1.7, it's barely any heavier (according to the stats). As someone who has health issues and can't carry a lot of weight, this is a wonderful advantage.

My only complaint (other than the superficial ones its silver colour looking odd on my black camera and that it doesn't include a lens hood) is the minimum focusing distance of 18" (or 1/2 a meter). While its telephoto properties mean even 18" the subject is usually the size I want, I've had to do a few awkward contortions to, say, photograph my food in a restaurant. And I also wish I could get closer when I'm photographing flowers or leaves: not macro-level close, just closer. Of course, that's only going to be an issue if you're using it as an everyday lens like I do!

All in all, as an enthusiastic amateur who upgraded from a Panasonic LX5 to the micro 4/3rds system in the hope of better low light performance, more bokeh, and richer feeling photographs, I've been completely satisfied, indeed quite thrilled, with the 45mm f1.8/Panasonic G3 combination. While I'll probably get the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 eventually (if only for its 6" minimum focusing distance!), the 45mm has turned out to be quite a flexible everyday lens option. More than ever, with this lens' beautiful and consistent photographs, I look forward to importing my photos and seeing how the shots turned out! My primary photography interests are travel, documenting important events, nature (mainly of the vegetative kind) and (most frequently) finding the art in everyday life, which I suppose you could call still life photography. I almost always shoot in Aperture priority and switch between auto and manual focus depending on my needs.

I shoot in RAW, then import into Aperture, which does its own processing thing. The clay pot has not been edited by me in any way, just imported into Aperture then exported as a smaller jpg. The landscape photo has been tweaked a bit for colour and light but not cropped. Keep in mind I've only had the camera and lens for a month, so I'm far from an expert at using them!

I just put this lens up against a Panasonic 25mm and a Panasonic 12-35 at the same f-stop - the 45mm was noticeably softer in the center of the frame. Actually the image overall was soft. Pictures taken with dual flashes fired wirelessly, static subject, same camera to subject distance. I'm requesting an RMA and probably just sticking with the other two lenses.

Kind of disappointed considering how good all the reviews have been on this lens. I guess there are always bad copies out there.

Comments about M. Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

I bought this lens for my LUMIX GH3. It is a very compact lens, that of course is one of the pluses of the micro 4/3 system. This particular lens was highly recommended at CameraLabs.com so I decided to take a chance on it. The lens mount 'fit' is slightly tighter than the Panasonic lenses I have. That surprised me, since both of these reliable companies have subscribed to the micro 4/3 specifications. I'm not suggesting that this 'fit' on the lens mount is a problem, as it goes on and comes off easily enough. It's just that there is this difference between the two brands.I've read a lot about the shortcomings of the micro 4/3 system with regards to getting a blurred background (bokeh) for photos. That is not a problem with this lens, I suppose because it is a slight telephoto. For the attached portrait, I was able to stand back a comfortable 8 feet, and the background was nicely blurred. Since this lens does NOT have IS (image stabilization) and neither does the GH3 body---there isn't any IS with this combo. However, I don't feel that this is a big deal with a 45mm (90mm equivalent) portrait lens. I simply need to be careful about not using really low shutter speeds; but typically a photographer shooting portraits outdoors will have the aperture open pretty wide, and that will push the shutter to a shorter speed anyway. Many of the micro 4/3 lenses seem a bit pricey. But this particular lens is priced reasonably. This is a nice reliable, compact and light lens that is easy to store in the camera bag, and I take it with me when I grab my camera bag and head out the door.

After switching to the Olympus OM-D from my Canon pro system, I've been looking for lenses of comparable quality to the Canon L series lenses. This one isn't quite at that level, but it's darned good based on the few shots I've already taken.

Comments about M. Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

I love this glass. It is the first M43 lens I have purchased outside the kit 14-42 which came with my E-PL5, and I literally have not taken it off since I put it on, about two months ago; and my Olympus goes with me everywhere, all the time. It is obviously not the most versatile piece of glass ever designed, being a portrait length lens, and not having a super close minimum focus distance, but the moment I put it on, and framed the same subject matter I was shooting with my zoom, it was so apparent how much better all of my images were going to look through this lens. Can't really go back.

I could spend time talking about all the obvious points which every other photographer mentions about this (fast, light, made of plastic, etc.) but instead I'll put it in my own context. I have been shooting on a Canon 7D (and the occasional 5D MkII, & MkIII borrowed from work) for about 4 years. I am quite fond of my Canon rig, and have not quite been induced to give up my EF system yet. I decided to start a second collection, of M43 gear, for use as a street rig. For one, M43 cameras and glass are much lighter, but they are also less expensive. This is important for me, because I like to feel free to go where I want, when I want (like the streets of Skid Row, at any hour of the night), with my camera hanging from my shoulder. I don't feel comfortable doing that with a camera and lens that would cost me $2,000+ to replace, because I know I would literally fight to the death if someone attempted to forcibly part me from them. $400 camera; considerably less likely to do so. In my EF system, I quickly discovered that I did not care for the character of Canon glass, and switched to Sigma, and old manual focus Nikon lenses, both of which I have been very happy with. In M43, I think it might end up being the opposite. I LOVE Olympus glass, but I have a feeling I might be switching to Panasonic bodies sometime in the future. I would actually go so far as to compare the Olympus lenses to the Sigma lenses; both are very sharp, very accurate lenses, but they still have a lot of personality, and the magical "je ne sais quois" quality that I value so much in a lens.

Before I purchased this lens, I almost never used AF on cameras, but the speed and accuracy of AF on this lens, combined with ease of use on touch screen controlled cameras, has totally changed the way I shoot, in a relatively short time. It's fantastic.

I hate to jump on a bandwagon, or use tired, cliché catchphrases, but I really have to agree with popular opinion on this one: this lens truly is a "must have" for any M43 shooter.

One of the best portrait lenses I've ever used. Not quite so smooth as the pre-asph 90 Summicron but it's in that league and a lot less painful to buy. Very sharp, very crisp, magnificent color rendition and superb bokeh. Just can't say enough good things about it. (Well, I could, but the review only allows a certain number of words...)

This is a must have prime lens for the micro 4/3 system and the second I purchased behind the 20mm f1.7. Great for portraits and short telephoto. I switched to the micro 4/3 system primarily because of size and weight and this lens is a great example of quality in a small package.

I use this lens on my OMD-M10 whenever I wish to limit DOF and it has nice bokeh.
It is sharp, contrasty and produces beautiful colors.
Everything I've come to expect from Zuiko lenses.

Very glad I purchased this lens to use with my Oly e-PM2. 45mm is great for portraits, outdoor shooting, and it's fast. Getting better shots of the kids and sports now.
All the reviews describing beautiful bokeh and great shots wide open are right on. I typically keep this lens on my camera all the time, but it's tough for close-ups, but that's not why I purchased it.

Comments about M. Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

This thing is awesome. Small, light, bright, and fast.

AF speed is super fast, nearly instant, and is completely quiet. If I put my ear up to the lens, I MIGHT be able to hear it if I tell it to try to focus with the lens cap on.

Sharpness is flat out incredible. Don't be afraid to shoot wide open, its sharper than most other brands primes are at f/4. Bokeh quality is flawless. Shoot at 1.8 and your background becomes a smooth ocean of blur.

Chromatic aberrations etc are well controlled, at least after the body applies its built in CA reduction. I didn't see any on my E-M1 raw files.

Haven't seen a lens flare yet, but I haven't pointed it at the sun either.

Build quality is good for a plastic lens, and its well put together. The quality of the plastic itself could be a bit better. The matte black finish is beautiful, but seems like it may scratch easily. It mounts very tight on my E-M1.

Also, I don't see why so many people complain about the beauty ring that covers the lens hood bayonet mounts. Olympus could have just not included it, and left the bayonet exposed like all the other companies do. Don't complain about it. Just take it off and put it in the box if you don't want it. The ring twists off very easily, revealing the lens hood mount. The lens hood then slides on and locks very easily, which brings me to my final point.

OLYMPUS, PLEASE include lens hoods with ALL lenses, or make them more realistically priced! Thanks for the beauty ring, but would loved to have seen a lens hood as well.

Comments about M. Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

This is arguably one of the best lenses in the Micro Four Thirds format. It's small, light and pin-sharp right into the corners. It yields a pleasant Bokeh but of course has all the DOF limitations of the format (this is effecitvely a 90mm f/3.6 lens on a full frame system), but it beats just about anything else in terms of its corner to corner to sharpness. It doesn't have stabilization so it's perhaps best suited for Pen and OMD cameras from Olympus which have IBIS, and of course with a minimum focus distance of .5m, Macro work is out! Great as a Portrait lens (with the caveat above) and excellent as an all-round street lens. A superb lens that should be in every Micro Four Thirds user's bag - and it's very reasonably priced!
