Product Highlights
  • Life-Size (1:1) Magnification
  • "Focus Free" Mechanical Design
  • 12.2" (31 cm) Close Focusing Distance
  • Non-Rotating Front Lens
  • Optical Stabilizer (OS)

The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras delivers superb, distortion-free images throughout its broad focus range, from infinity telephoto to life-size (1:1) macro, as close as 12.2" (31 cm) without accessories. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and one high refractive index SLD lens provide excellent correction for all types of aberration and distortion. Its non-rotating front lens group makes it easier to work with polarizing filters. A focus limiter helps divide the broad focus range into more manageable chunks.

The "focus-free" mechanical design allows the lens to autofocus without any interference from the manual focus ring, making it easy to hold the lens without affecting the speed or normal operation of the autofocus function. Rugged mechanical construction also makes it durable enough for even the heaviest use required by professional photographers. An ideal lens for a wide variety of applications from nature photography to portraiture.

The improved DG lens design for this lens corrects for various aberrations. This macro lens is specially coated to get the best color balance while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras. Sigma's own proprietary OS (Optical Stabilizer) system enables handheld close-up photography.

Close focus capability of 12.2" (31 cm)
Optical Stabilization (OS) enables hand-held close-up photography
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghosting caused by reflections from the surface of digital image sensors
Dual Focus (DF) makes the lens easier to hand hold during AF

I'm having a great time with this lens. I'm shooting with a D90 and purchased the Sigma to replace a Tokina 100mm macro. The Tokina was no slouch, but I was really looking for some OS/IS implementation. There are not many reviews online regarding using OS with hand held macro shooting, so I'll say that the Sigma performs well in that regard. This time of year I'm a bit of a bug hunter, and you've got to be quick (and lucky) to get a good shot. Not having to compensate for hand shake gives me more options, especially regarding shutter speed and DOF.

Sharpness is good through the aperture range with nice bokeh as you open up. Auto focus is faster and more accurate than the Tokina was, and the ability to manually focus on-the-fly is great.

    Happy as a clam!

I purchased this lens to replace my Nikon 105 Micro 2.8 D and to have the extra feature of OS, but after testing it against the Nikon, I decided that the OS (not as good as Nikon's VR system), was the only improvement. I tested it with identical settings as the Nikon and and in the end, optically, it was an even match. Good build quality, fast and quiet focus, but average resolution, for a macro.

I purchased this lens to go with my Nikon D5200 and Nimar underwater housing. I am very happy with the results. It may not be quite up to the quality of a Nikon lense but very close. Great Lense for the price.

Comments about Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras:

The lens does what it claims to and takes fairly good photos. It's difficult to avoid blur and it shoots best from a tripod. The photo below was taken on a tripod and the deer was about twenty feet away from me when I took it. It's a slow lens and in limited light noise will become a problem as you boost your ISO to compensate. Using it for macro it works well being held held provided you have a good base and there is enough light. Otherwise you will need a tripod or you will have to move your subject indoors.

The image is sharp in macro, less so further away. My prime 50mm lense is sharper for general photos and I was expecting something a little sharper when I read all of the reviews about how it was a good portrait camera.

At any rate, if you buy it, be prepared to play around with it quite a bit before you figure out the best depth of field and its best uses.

As a macro photographer I have to say the images are as sharp as they can get. The auto focus is a little noisy but you shouldn't be using that for macro anyway. Once again great lens very sharp and clean images highly recommended!

Comments about Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras:

I bought this lens primarily for flower photography. It has performed beautifully, with the ability to produce tack-sharp focus on the subject while totally blowing out background where I don't want any detail. I principally use manual focus with autofocus assist (which Nikon calls "rangefinder"), and the focus ring works smoothly enough, and with low-enough gearing, to allow me to achieve perfect focus on the targeted point. It's by no means a lightweight lens, but because I shoot almost exclusively with a tripod the weight is not an issue for me. I'm totally satisfied with my purchase.

Just bought this lens before heading to Hawaii, wanted it for the macro in taking flowers. Takes great photos of flowers and other bugs such as a spider I found by the pool. I then took this lens up to the top of Mauna Kea and it gave me nice clear photos of the sun set even in 60 mph winds.

The Sigma 105mm was rated highly by a number of reputable reviewers so I decided to give it a try. I was hoping I could do better than the Nikon competitor for a lot less money. As soon as I opened the box, I put it through a test for sharpness and distortion. I got what I was looking for. Great lens. I couldn't be more pleased.

I will be using this product for flower photography mostly. It was a toss up between this lens and the name brand and I didn't want to be too snobby so I thought I would give this a try. In all of my shooting with it so far, I can see no visible differences between this lens and the name brand lens. This one is a little louder. At first I thought it was the auto focus that was loud but then realized it was the image stablization that was making the noise. For my purposes that will be fine, but if you will want to shoot insects and other little critters it might be too loud which is why it got a 4 rating instead of 5.

Comments about Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras:

I use this lens for portrait and macro photography. It works great with the Nikon D 7100.
I like this lens a lot, but if I could change one thing, I would have it focus faster on close distance range.

I've been a big fan of Nikkor lenses for years. I was lloking for a 105mm macro lens and researched my options. The test reports I read rated this lens not only sharp but THE Sharpest for the Nikon. I've used this hand held and the optical stabilization works well. On a tripod with my Nikon D800 the images produced are stunning. I highly recommend this lens for anyone serious about tack sharp macro work.

Comments about Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras:

Photozone and DXO Mark rate this lens as being the best 1:1 Macro lens for Nikon. The Zeiss is optically superior except for the fact that it lacks AF, image stabilization, and only magnifies at 1:2, so if those features are important to you then your choice should be the Sigma

I tested this lens on a copy-stand with a focus chart and compared it to the Nkon 85mm 1.8G which is widely considered to be the best resolving lens for DSLR (as of 5-19-13). I did not use a computer to analyze the MTF resolution, however, according to my eye, the center of the Sigma resolved as well as our reference Nikon Lens from f5-f9 AND the borders of the image resolved SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER.

The autofocus is accurate, quiet and fast.

My only complaint with this lens is that the image stabilization is probably 1-2 stops less effective than on the Nikon Makro, otherwise, this lens has better optics and a better price.

Comments about Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras:

I bought this to do outdoor macro photography: flowers, nature, insects, etc. I am impressed with it's sharpness and minimal chromatic aberration. I was wanting to get a macro lens and wanted to keep it in the $500 price range. But I read on several reviews that this lens was a really good one. So I went ahead and got it. And I'll tell you, it's really worth the extra $[$]. The optical stabilization is awesome. It honestly wouldn't be worth it trying to save a few hundred bucks to get something without optical stabilization. None of your pictures will come out decent. When I don't have it turned on, at this level of zoom, you can really tell the difference. The lens is heavy...not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing. It's also really great for portraits. At the widest aperture the bokeh is very nice.

Comments about Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro Lens for Nikon AF Cameras:

I purchased this lens based on reading online reviews and decided to give it a shot. This lens is super sharp for macro photos and doubles as a portrait lens as well although it is a little soft wide open, but by f/4 all of that is simply gone. You should be using manual focus for macro work, but if you aren't you will notice that the lens tends to hunt in lower light a lot.
