Comments about G-Technology 3TB Spare Module with Enterprise Class Drive (Internal):

I purchased a G Speed Q (12 TB) in February to use as a backup and archive for Video editing work. For a number of reasons I didn't get around to installing it until April. I use Windows 7 so I had to go through the process of clearing the Mac Partition and creating a Windows Partition. The documentation was online and usable but needs to be updated for Windows 7. I like the unit in that it is small and quiet. It was quite easy to connect and get operational. I wish that there was some type of software dashboard to monitor the raid and drive log/failures.

After one week of operation a drive failed. I intended to order a spare drive but had not yet as I didn't expect a failure that early. So I went online to g-tech and applied for a warranty RMA. Upon reading all the shipping instructions (part of which suggests you should order a specific box to ship the dead drive back at a cost of $25 for the box and $10 to have it shipped to you). I called tech support for clarification and found out that RMA's you get online are for an entire unit (the whole raid array), to get an RMA for just one drive requires that you call tech support. So the tech gave me a new RMA and suggested that the box I receive the spare drive I ordered would be adequate for returning the defective drive.

Within three days of putting the G Speed Q back into operation with the new spare drive installed, another drive failed. That was last week. I'm waiting for my repaired drive to return so that I can ship the second failure.
I really want to like this drive, but two drive failures with less than two weeks up time in an enterprise class product is not encouraging, but I am still hopeful.

The spare worked wonderfully for the three days but is now shut down until the next replacement arrives.
