Comments about Midland XT511 Base Camp 2-Way Communication Radio with Crank:

When it arrived it was a little smaller than I expected, but that was actually a plus. It takes up less counter space. I liked the USB port on the side, if you have a power outage, you can charge your phone with it, and if the radio goes dead, it has a hand crank that will charge the battery back up. You can either use the hand Mic to transmit, or unplug it and use the PTT button on the radio itself. The range in GMRS mode is actually better than expected, so I am very pleased with the radio. >>One thing to note, to use the GMRS radio channels you do need an FCC license. Its $[$]for a five year issue, and there is no test.<< There are tons of features on this thing, in fact way more than I needed. I have two other radios, and wanted my wife to be able to contact us while we were in the field. So anything past that was just an extra for us, the weather radio has already come in handy with this past storm. I have used Midland gear in the past, and expect this to last a very long time.

I bought this because of the range (up to 26 miles) and because it has 3 power sources including a hand crank. Great for emergencies or just hiking or camping.

Comments about Midland XT511 Base Camp 2-Way Communication Radio with Crank:

We wanted to use these while camping. It is more cumbersome than a walkie-talkie, but good for two different basecamps to communicate with each other.

Comments about Midland XT511 Base Camp 2-Way Communication Radio with Crank:

I got this and two pair of GRMS radios for emergency. Haven't had an emergency yet but I tested the unit and found it to be easy use, comapact (for easy storage), lightweight and has a bevy of useful features. I especially like the fact I can re-charge my cellphone & GPS with the built in crank generator.

Immediately after trying it I ordered two more base camps as x-mas gifts. I am also recommending to my neighbors and friends that they buy one.

There are probably better radios out there but at this price point I think this one is hard to beat.
