The 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor Lens from Nikon is a superb carry-it-everywhere, jack-of-all-trades lens for your Nikon DX camera. The focal length (equivalent to 60mm in FX or 35mm format) gives it the versatility to capture portraits, street shots and landscape photos without breaking a sweat. And the light weight (9.9 oz/280 g) means you'll actually carry it around with you, greatly increasing the chance that you'll get a great photo.

Continuous quiet autofocus from infinity to 6.4 inches, and quick switching from autofocus to manual focus and back will keep you from missing any photo opportunities. The 7-blade diaphragm delivers a lovely, natural-looking background blur (known as bokeh), and Nikon's lens coating gives you reduced lens flare and improved color consistency. Take a close look at this lens--it could be your new best photo friend.

Compact and Lightweight DX-Format Close-Up Lens
Small enough to be carried everywhere, this standard focal length DX-format Micro-Nikkor lens provides high resolution and contrast from infinity to life-size (1X). The AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G is for taking high quality stills and HD D-Movies and is ideal for shooting general close-ups, delicate flowers, detailed collectables, copy photography, portraits, landscapes and more.
Sharp Images from Infinity to Life-Size (1X)
This standard close-up lens captures the finest details at any distance, including details practically impossible to detect with the human eye (at 1X magnification). It's a great choice for enticing food photography or detailed product shots. And with its continuous autofocusing from infinity to 6.4 inches (life-size/1X), the AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G ensures sharpness and clarity in every composition.
Stunning Portraits and Landscapes, Too
The AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G is compact, lightweight and versatile enough for everyday photography, including flattering people shots and breathtaking landscapes, so you get brilliant results in most situations without switching lenses.
Natural Background Blur (Bokeh)
Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature-indoors or outdoors-the AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G's rounded 7-blade diaphragm renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. Selective focus helps to isolate the subject, creating out of focus backgrounds.
Superior Close-Range Focusing
The Close-Range Correction system is one of Nikon's most important focusing innovations. Using an innovative floating element design, each lens group moves independently to achieve superior performance at close distances.
Quiet Autofocus
A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations-rather than a gear system-to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
Quick Switching from AF to MF
When fine manual focusing is needed, simply rotate the lens focus ring-M/A mode allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with virtually no time lag.
Reduce Lens Flare and Ghosting
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced lens flare.

I'll start by saying this: I don't like prime lenses. Yes, I understand *why* prime lenses are good (fast, beautiful bokeh, sharp) but useful? Well, for the types of photography I do (travel, landscapes), they're just not practical. I've tried the 35mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.8 on my D7000 and they just ended up collecting dust. I sold them off and bought this.

Third time's a charm, right? RIGHT. Why did I buy this? Because this lens serves two purposes: it's relatively fast at 2.8, it's wider than the 50mm on my crop sensor, and it has the ability to shoot macro. For me, this lens makes sense as I *did* want a faster lens in my bag, AND I can shoot macro. For the price, it cannot be beat.

It's also lightweight (important for travel), VERY sharp, and I can still use it for portraits should the need arise.

This is an excellent value for your money. I'm having a blast learning macro photography, and it's a fast lens for general indoor/low light work. Love it.

    Good lens, but missing parts.

Lens is near perfect but what I am disappointed is this lens came with generic front cap and not original Nikon cap. So beware!

        Comments about Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor Lens:

There was a need in the camera bag for a prime lens faster than the usual zooms and this fit the bill perfectly. Used it while at the ABQ Dragway shooting the jet cars for the team, both action and candid. The f/2.8 rating coupled with ISO made for some great shots when time was critical. Nice and light and fast focusing with outstanding optics make this one a keeper.

This is the first lens I have bought in a long time. I use this lens mostly for close-up macro photography. With the fast f 2.8 lens you can get really close up and get great macro photos. The auto focus works really well even you're very very close to your subject. The lens also works well for portrait photography. For a Nikon lens it is a great value at a great price

I've mostly used the 40mm as a normal lens and found it to have great edge-to-edge sharpness.
I would still give the 50mm f/1.4 the edge in overall 'look and feel' of image quality, but the 40mm is sharp

The Nikkor 40mm Micro lens was purchased primarily to be used with a Nikon D7100 and a circular polarizer. The gear is used mostly for macro work photographing industrial components. Auto-focus gave outstanding performance; which is used for ~ 60% of my work; the remaining 40% is in manual focus mode.

I use this lense primarily for macro shots of flowers and insects, and wedding closeups.

Because I do not own a Nikon DX DSLR, I am using this lens on my Nikon 1v1 via the Nikon FT1 for closeups of flowers and insects and am greatly impressed with its optical quality. It also serves well for informal portrait work. Given the lens quality it's an excellent value.

I have only had this lens for a short time and have not used it all that much but for the few times I have I am well pleased. Nikon lenses have a very sharp image. Can't wait to get out and do more macro photography.

                                  Comments about Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor Lens:

For close-up and still-life work this lens fits the bill perfectly. Very sharp output, and no fringing or other color issues that I've seen. Nice bokeh, too. It's also good - not great - as a fast general-purpose lens, although with the 1.5x crop factor on my D7100 it's obviously not a sweeping landscape or family reunion group photo lens. It's solid yet light, and is well-built. Two things: First, I don't know if it's the lens or my unfamiliarity with the D7100 (it's new to me), but in any mode but full auto, the focus point always seems to be weighted to the left side of the frame and jumps around quite a bit no matter what I'm shooting. Second, as there's no vibration damping, I recommend using a tripod with this lens.

                                    Comments about Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor Lens:

I bought this lens because I was not happy with the result of the zoom that came with the camera. I've been taking pictures of dogs at our local shelter to post on the website and found that I spent a lot of time adjusting the brightness, correcting the color and sharpness. With this lens, I spend about a quarter of the time correcting the photographs.
