Designed for DX-format cameras AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens from Nikon will allow users to get true 1:1 magnification for extremely close-up imaging. It has a 60mm equivalent focal length in FX format along with a capable aperture range of f/2.8 to 22. Also, it has the Close-Range Correction system to ensure image quality is maintained at such close angles.

Continuous quiet autofocus from infinity to 6.4 inches with a Silent Wave Motor AF system, and quick switching from autofocus to manual focus and back will keep you from missing any photo opportunities. The 7-blade diaphragm delivers a lovely, natural-looking background blur, and Nikon's Super Integrated lens coating gives you reduced lens flare and improved color consistency.

Compact and Lightweight DX-Format Close-Up Lens
Small enough to be carried everywhere, this standard focal length DX-format Micro-NIKKOR lens provides high resolution and contrast from infinity to life-size. The AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is for taking high quality stills and HD D-Movies and is ideal for shooting general close-ups, delicate flowers, detailed collectibles, copy photography, portraits, landscapes and more.
Sharp Images from Infinity to Life-Size (1X)
This standard close-up lens captures the finest details at any distance, including details practically impossible to detect with the human eye. It's a great choice for enticing food photography or detailed product shots. And with its continuous autofocusing from infinity to 6.4 inches, the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G ensures sharpness and clarity in every composition.
Stunning Portraits and Landscapes, Too
The AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is compact, lightweight and versatile enough for everyday photography, including flattering people shots and breathtaking landscapes, so you get brilliant results in most situations without switching lenses.
Natural Background Blur (Bokeh)
Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature-indoors or outdoors-the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G's rounded 7-blade diaphragm renders a beautiful, natural background blur (bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. Selective focus helps to isolate the subject, creating out of focus backgrounds.
Superior Close-Range Focusing
The Close-Range Correction system is one of Nikon's most important focusing innovations. Using an innovative floating element design, each lens group moves independently to achieve superior performance at close distances.
Quiet Autofocus
A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations-rather than a gear system-to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
Quick Switching from AF to MF
When fine manual focusing is needed, simply rotate the lens focus ring-M/A mode allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with virtually no time lag.
Reduce Lens Flare and Ghosting
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced lens flare.

After reading many of the reviews here, I was leaning toward getting the 40mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor (as a birthday gift from my wife), but I wanted to talk with the B&H staff about macro lens use and get a recommendation. Steve showed me the four Nikkor macro lenses. He said that the key factor was how far away from my subjects I expected to be. He pointed out that my 18-300mm zoom Nikkor could function as a quasi-macro lens at full zoom. I tried the 40mm macro and the 105mm VR macro, both f/2.8 lenses. Largely because of price I decided on the 40mm, with the idea that I would try it out on the High Line elevated garden that very morning and decide whether I wanted to keep or return it. I'm keeping it. After using my lovely but heavy zoom lens with my D7100 for a year, I appreciated the lightness of the 40mm. The camera is also less conspicuous with the smaller lens, so candid photography was easier. I was able to get very close to the flowers I was photographing, making some perspectives possible by leaning over that would have been impossible if I'd had to be further from my subjects. What really impressed me after loading the pics into Aperture was how good many of the images looked when enlarged. See the two enlargements below for examples. I used auto-focus with normal program (P) metering on the flower pic and manual focus with aperture priority (A) metering on the bee pic.

    Good lens, but missing parts.

Lens is near perfect but what I am disappointed is this lens came with generic front cap and not original Nikon cap. So beware!

I purchased this lens to photograph my model building and nature images. I walk for exercise in the forest preserves and this lens is lightweight and does a great job of bringing in the minute detail of objects I and shooting.

Wish it was the 105mm version.

            Comments about Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor Lens:

I purchased this lens to replace an old Nikon zoom lens with macro capability that I used on a film Nikon. This lens is lighter and much easier to use. While it does not zoom, I have other zoom lenses. The focal length makes it useful to double as a standard lens. It has a large enough aperture to also use for portraits. I have only taken a few pictures so far but it appears to be working as advertised.

              Comments about Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor Lens:

I bought this lens primarily for macro work but I have found that it works great as a general purpose lens as well. I originally thought that without VR there might be problems but I have not run into any blur problems yet. The images are very clear and sharp and for the relatively low cost I am quite pleased. I do not have any real complaints yet except that the lens shroud could fit a bit tighter. I would recommend this lens to anyone looking for a low cost macro lens from Nikon.

I bought this lens for my wife as an early Christmas present, as the Sigma EX Macro would not work with her Nikon D3100. Though her camera is outdated, this lens is not. Its built-in motor makes it work for almost any camera and it takes amazingly sharp photos with a great depth of field. It wasn't outlandishly expensive, so it's perfect for beginners. She loves it!

                      Comments about Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor Lens:

I purchased this lens with the intention of using it to take macro shots of flowers, and it has worked very well so far. The only issue that I have had is that it sometimes takes a little while for it to focus. It was well worth the money, though, and I would recommend getting it.

my wife loves the macro... she's a gardener and now enjoys taking her own photos, all close ups...
now I'll have to buy her a body for her lens so she'll stop using mine...

                        Comments about Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor Lens:
