This Vivitar SD Memory Carder reader functions quite well. It's a real bargain. I can't imagine a SD reader costing 2 or 3 times as much working any better.
The SD card plugs into the reader very well making a good connection.
The reader itself plugs firmly into the computer's USB port making a good connection.
The images on the card transfer as expected.
The end cap covering the USB end fits like a glove and will remain in place until you pop it off to use the reader.
The Achilles Heel for this Vivitar product is the loosely fitting protective end cap that is supposed to protect the opening that the SD card plugs into. The cap will not stay on. It is too loose. If you store the reader in a compartment of your camera bag it will fall off.
The Fix: To secure the SD port end cap, cut a tiny strip of masking tape or other thin tape and adhere it on one shoulder of the SD port and trim off any overhang. Just by adding one thin tape thickness to one side of the shoulder makes the cap nice and secure.
I used black photographic making tape, but in retrospect, a tiny dab of epoxy, the type made for plastic, placed on one shoulder and allowed to harden, might work even better and last longer.
Vivitar can do better.

Use for downloading datalogger data to my macbook. Transmission speeds kind of slow, and it covers the only other USB port on the mac, which I need simultaneously. So, I don't use this. I bought a different one with a short cable to the USB port. It's faster and I can use the other port.

A Must Have
Comments about Vivitar SD Card Reader:
The SD card on mine doesn't go in easily AT ALL. Nervously tried shoving it in, and while it did go in the computer couldn't read it.
100% sure I was putting the card in correctly.
Beware? Hopefully mine was the only bad one...?

Needed a small fast SD card reader that would fit in the pouch with my point & shoot camera. It has been excellent so far.

I tried several other cheap models from [@]and they either did not work at all with my 32-gig SDHC or they would read but lock up writing every time.I ordered the Vivtar adapter from here and it works great. I am running a Virual Machine from it and have no problems.

Comments about Vivitar SD Card Reader:
I prefer this style and design of card reader to the current variety of USB thumb drives, most of which if not all now have embedded software that you can't get rid of and either must use or navigate around when doing a copy or transfer. With these card readers you just plug in an SD card and you're good to go on data transfers and backups without any software getting in the way. This Vivitar model is almost identical to a reader which Kingston used to make but which I have been unable to find lately. I guess Kingston discontinued it and Vivitar picked up the patent. Probably the only problem is that they are a bit larger than a thumb drive but that doesn't bother me.
