The Thunderbolt interface is shockingly fast. The RAID-5 configuration is essential if recording with tapeless devices. Expensive, but less expensive than reshooting a project.

Comments about Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus R4 RAID Storage with Thunderbolt (4x 2TB):

Received Pegasus R4 T8 and was defective out of the box. B&H handled the return exchange promptly. I was required to send the unit back before they could send out the replacement. They electronically sent me a return waybill to cover the return expense. Of course I had a job ready to inaugurate the new RAID unit and those plans were now delayed by about six days.

Replacement unit worked fine but within two days one of the four internal drives died. This time, on B&H's advice, I requested service directly through Promise Technology Support. My first phone call to Promise Technical Support was quickly picked up and quickly handled. The tech guy walked me through an on-line confirmation of the failed drive (cool "Promise Utility" software), and sent out FedEx Overnight a replacement drive. I was told that I could carry-on working with the RAID until the replacement drive arrived but I didn't feel comfortable working with the unit when it's RAID function was compromised. Remember, it would be functioning on only three drives so, another two work days lost. Promise requires that the failed drive be sent back to them, in the same packaging that the replacement drive came in. That would be no problem, except that they didn't send a waybill to cover the expense of return. Of course, the shipping cost wouldn't be exorbitant but it was the principal of the thing. I had to call back (about one hour on the phone waiting), to demand a waybill. That was solved. The new replacement drive initialized in about 5 hours and I was off and running, no data lost.

Then, in approximately another two days a second drive failed. This time the phone connection with Promise took over an hour (luck of the draw). The tech guy I connected with was different but was just as resourceful and helpful and he confirmed the problem, again on-line, as a different drive that failed. Again, they sent a new drive out FedEx Overnight, and this time I demanded in advance the Waybill required for returning the second failed drive, which proved to be a bit of a battle but they accommodated me because I just squeaked in under their warranty rules.

Again, I didn't use the unit until the new replacement drive was installed and initialized, which represented another two days lost.

So far, FINALLY, it is behaving real good. Thunderbolt is screamingly fast. I'm working with multi-cam footage in Final Cut Pro X and I've got both the Event files and Project files running off the RAID together with no hesitations or baulking.

On principal, relative my whole ordeal, if I have another service problem before 30 days from original purchase date transpires, I will send it back to B&H, and I will wait for the next wave of competitive Thunderbolt hardware options to arrive from OTHER manufacturers.

Comments about Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus R4 RAID Storage with Thunderbolt (4x 2TB):

After the standard 10 hours reserved for it to sync I hooked it to a 27" Thunderbolt Display/MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011 with 8GB 1600 MHz RAM and an 180 GB Intel 520 SSD (w/a 7200 rpm 750 GB HDD on the optibay). Ran all the Promise firmware updates, updated the Promise utility, running on Lion 10.7.4.
The good: The R4 is almost completely silent. Put some music and you won't even notice it's there.
Transferring backups from USB 2.0 is a hassle: syncing connections fail, transfers are around 42 MB/s. Slow speed is to be blamed on the USB 2.0 but for this price the R4 could include a SATA port adapter to plug in the old drives and ease data migration.
The Bad: Big transfers from USB 2.0 stutter the keyboard and mouse. Unplugging the keyboard and (wired) mouse from the Thunderbolt Display and plugging to the MacBook Pro USB port solves it.
Using a minidisplay VGA adapter on the Promise TB downstream port didn't work for a Samsung SyncMaster 2253LW: intermittent display signal, never recognized the native resolution (actually lowering the resolution didn't work either and SwitchresX couldn't fix it). It bums me out because I was using a Tritton See2Extreme USB-to-DVI/VGA adapter for the third display and expected the R4 to wean me off of it...
The Worse: Audio signal is OK when the R4 is idle. When Time Machine kicks in, audio has to be completely stopped (such as when using Grooveshark, YouTube). Some minutes after Time Machine completes the sync, audio can be restarted. It has nothing to do with the size of the files being backed up.
There are mixed results regarding speed and performance depending on the order of the connections, and each has its own set of mishaps.
The manuals do not explain all you can do with the Promise utility software.
With the latest firmware update, I expected better.

I have several G-Raid drives, and found myself spending 14-18 hours in order to make duplicate drives for off site storage of my files. I started to notice a slow down in performance, and wanted to try a Thunderbolt drive. After doing some research I chose the 8TB Pegasus, and have been extremily happy so far. Running Raid-5 and it is several times faster then my stand alone G-Raid drives. I have plenty of room to gorw, and I'm confident that the system will take good care of me for the next 3-4 years.

Comments about Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus R4 RAID Storage with Thunderbolt (4x 2TB):

I was unfamiliar with RAID 5, which is what this device comes with standard configuration. You can change it, but I left it RAID 5. I was going to mirror to have data redundancy giving me an effective 4TB, but I was pleased to have 6TB on the 8TB system with RAID 5 giving me redundancy.

Set-up took all night, about 10 hours running, to configure the 8TB system RAID 5... but when it was done, it displayed a 6TB drive to my iMac. Writes to the Pegasus R4 are about twice as fast as my internal SATA drive... reads are insanely fast... the read benchmark showed read speeds over 6 times faster than any USB or Firewire 800 drive I have... insane. Definitely get it if you need lots of space, fast reads and redundancy....

Needed RAID for office images for education. Have a DROBO--VERY slow. With new Macbook pro Thunderbolt and the Pegasus, access is AMAZING and almost instantaneous. Setup a breeze.
Set for RAID 5 out of the box.
