The Fostex HP-P1 Headphone Amplifier & D/A Converter is a portable headphone amplifier with a D/A converter that receives its audio signal digitally from your iPod/iPhone 30-pin dock connector. It's designed to provide exquisite tone, depth and effective headroom for unsurpassed sonic performance and fidelity. The HP-P1 features a 3-step gain control to accommodate all types of headphones, as well as a built-in S/PDIF digital out.
This headphone amp employs AKM's 32-bit AK4480 DAC, which offers on-chip symmetrical circuitry to avoid noise coupling, thus improving sound quality. It has two digital filters including a 32-bit minimum delay filter designed specifically for acoustic sounds. Engineered from aircraft-grade aluminum and built to exacting standards, the HP-P1 is a delight to handle and operate. Also included is a carrying case that can be clipped to a belt for easy transport.

Comments about Fostex HP-P1 Headphone Amplifier & DAC:
Most of my music files were either ripped from CDs (via Exact Audio Copy) or downloaded as FLAC files, which were then converted to Nero AAC (m4a) files at 425 Kbps via dBpoweramp Music Converter. To my ears, while the m4a files seem to be indistinguishable from the WAV files, the listening experience was always just "adequate" rather than actually "enjoyable." However, in walks the HP-P1 and it quickly becomes very clear what I've been missing all these years of listening through an iPod. The sound is full, warm, and has a real presence to it. On the other hand, it's a bit cumbersome to pull out the combined unit to change songs while traveling on the street or subway, but that's a small price to pay for hearing real music again!

Comments about Fostex HP-P1 Headphone Amplifier & DAC:
This Fostex HP-P1 headphone amp is exactly what a traveling professional has been waiting for! It does what it says it can do. It's clean and powerful.
I put it against every other portable USB powered headphone amp out there.
Plain and simple, clean and distortion free. When you're plugging in a pair of $1,700 headphones into a Fostex HP-P1headphone amp, you're getting the headphones you paid for.

Comments about Fostex HP-P1 Headphone Amplifier & DAC:
It's good for anything, it will accept an aux input or usb sync cable (30 pin iPod connector). It comes with a nice little two-inch sync cable (though I had Magnolia create a nice iPod sync cable made from silver, pricey but a nice compliment to this amp). I mostly use it for headphones on the plane. It's small enough that you can have this and an ipod in one pocket though that would be slightly bulky. There's also an optical out, line out and it sounds great. Fiio keeps making these cheap little amps and I believe it's the DAC that's not so easy to create (the Fiio's sound terrible, distortion at higher volumes, painful). But Fostex pulled it off nicely.
The one problem I have with this product is that the knob is too large. I have a fear that it will be the weak link when it breaks. Also, after a month of using and one vacation, I could suddenly hear something rattling around inside. A loose small screw or something. It still works but thats not good at all for the future.

Comments about Fostex HP-P1 Headphone Amplifier & DAC:
Great product that makes the music on your iPhone/ipod really shine. It bypasses the existing DAC and truly makes your music shine. Existing ITUNES music really sounds so much better. IF using FLAC PLAYER and downloading 24 bit music from HD tracks, the musicality is truly astonishing. I use it with headphones and in my car (have a Porsche wit the Burmester system and it really is a great compliment to the system). It essentially turns your iPod/Iphone into a storage device.
Negatives - adds a bit of heft to your iPhone/ipod but still quite portable - a little pricy but I think its worth it if you value sound
Comments about Fostex HP-P1 Headphone Amplifier & DAC:
Use this product to interface my iPod classic and my bowers and Wilkins p5 headphones. The sound quality is exceptional, however the battery life could be better. Also, this device heavily impacts the iPods normal battery life despite. Toasting the iPods internal dac. Other than that, an awesome device.

Comments about Fostex HP-P1 Headphone Amplifier & DAC:
I've been searching for a while for a Portable Headphone Amp with a built in Rechargeable Battery and DAC for my iPod. This Fostex HP-P1 is the ticket. The sound quality this Headphone Amp produces from the iPod is truely amazing. I've got it partnered with a pair of Sony MDR-EX1000 in ear headphones and the sound is punchy smooth and clear. A great combination. I've also tested the analogue line in and it sounds just as good. A thoughtful inclusion by Fostex is a short usb cable that helps to keep things tidy when stacking the iPod on top of the amp. This device may look expensive but is worth it. Go ahead and spoil yourself.

Comments about Fostex HP-P1 Headphone Amplifier & DAC:
THE HP-P1 SOUNDS VERY GOOD IT UN-MUDDIES THE IPOD AND PRODUCES CRISP ARTICULATE SOUND. IT LOOKS BETTER THAN IN THE PICTURES AND WITH ALL THE CABLES HANGING OUT THE EXTENDED ON/OFF VOLUME KNOB IS NICE.
DOWN SIDES ARE ONLY 7 HOURS BATTERY LIFE A MILD CHANNEL IMBALANCE AT THE LOWEST SETTINGS.
PERSONALLY I WOULD HAVE LIKED A MORE HI TECH LIGHTING LIKE THE TTVJ SLIM VOLUME CONTROL AND A BATTERY CHARGE LED LIKE APPLES MAC BOOK PRO THE OLD FASHIONED GREEN ON AND OFF LIGHT SEEMS A LITTLE 1960'S BUT FUNCTIONALLY THIS IS AS GOOD AS PORTABLE GETS. I LISTEN THROUGH BEYERDYNAMIC 1350'S AND A GEN 2 IPOD. THIS IS A NICE ROAD RIG FOR THE HOTEL.

Comments about Fostex HP-P1 Headphone Amplifier & DAC:
If you can afford it I cant say enough good things about this product. Now, assuming you have lossless files, you can get desktop performance out of your ipod. Sound is very clean and pristine. Big difference over a line-out headphone amp. Bypassing the internal DAC and inserting quaility ones makes a huge leap forward for those who are audiophiles and want the best possible portable sound
