This unit can connect to Mac computers that have a Thunderbolt port, such as a MacBook Pro or iMac. Plus, you can daisy-chain up to six enclosures. For the office or at home, if you want safe and vast data storage with super-swift recall speeds, your soaring, reliable solution just might be this Pegasus.

- Seriously, for $1000 your not going to include the thunderbolt cable? I could get over this easier if it wasn't for the fact that...
- It doesn't have any connectors other than Thunderbolt. This is either important to you or not, if you exclusively use Macs and only newer versions then it won't matter.

I have a 15" MacBook PRO, loaded, purchased May 2011
I have a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display
I purchased my Pegasus R4 Nov. 29, 2011
It started mysteriously disconnecting (resulting in Apple Stop Sign msg.) a few weeks after I bought it. I put up with it for a while thinking it might be something else.
I finally opened a ticket with Promise on January 20th.
The drive is now dead. Check that, it whirs and has nice blue lights but it doesn't show up in finder.
11th day out of operation ....Promise has given me no indication they will replace the unit. My data is trapped.
You get a tech on your ticket and that is the Only person you will ever talk to.
I really want the thing to work because it was fast and quiet and RAID5 is secure. (Like the other reviewers) Thankfully I backed up my LR3 cat to a little Lacie Firewire drive. (I almost didn't do this)
If you're a pro photographer and want it for large capacity fast storage. DON'T
I will probably return it to B&H. It's only 2 months and I bought the 3yr warranty.
It's not yet 90 days so I have the mfg warranty. a joke.
Is this an isolated incident?
Am I alone?

This drive is part of our new iMac workstation. It screams. We can easily work with multiple streams of HD without have to transcode, can work with uncompressed video, etc. The drive is usually the bottleneck in any computer system and this drive removes that problem.
Ours worked right out of the box as soon as we plugged it in. Blackmagic disk speed tests clock it at over 500mb per second. editing, after effects, file conversion, etc are all much faster from this drive than from our old 2-disk firewire G-Raid.
By far the most expensive drive I've purchase and well worth it.

I bought the Pegasus R4 for hi def video editing. It comes configured as a RAID 5 and requires no experience to set up - after an overnight (or 8 plus hours) initialization, it is good to go.It is extremely quiet, cool-running and fast, giving me no problems with a hi def workflow running on an iMac and Premier Pro. I would recommend this RAID system as cost effective and reliable.

I have had most of the problems discussed on the thread contained in the an apple discussion website on the problems with the R4.
I have as result wrapped my TB cable that I bought at the same time in kitchen foil and moved the connector to the LHS socket on the back of the R4. So far it seems to be initialising as it should.
I will use the product to back up the contents of my MBP HDD.

Pulled the unit out, hooked up the power and thunderbolt cable to my Mac Mini server, the drive was immediately recognized. The setup software was at the root on the drive - very easy to configure. The drive came already configured for Raid 5 (what I wanted anyway). Dumped a Terabyte of data on there and it seems to be 100% functional. The included control panel is useful in a number of ways. I would buy another in a heartbeat. Perfect solution for needing space for a large amount of data that you do not want to lose.
Maybe I'll get around to reading the install instructions one day. Nah...

I wanted a large storage fast transfer option for my 27" iMac i7 Apple 3.4GHz 16GB 2TB 512SSD AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB. I read some reviews regarding the drive unmounting on the newer systems after 48 hours. It has been three weeks now with no problems. I keep the drive on 24/7 and turn the computer off.
I use lightroom3 and it flys with this configuration.
The reason that I reviewed 4 stars instead of 5 is that they advertise plug and play out of the box. That is partly true.
The drives are configured from the factory RAID 5which is fine because that is how I wanted it configured. So I plug it in to use it and realize it takes 10 hours to set itself up. The factory should do this before the drive is shipped.
The drive works great, it is fast, and it satisfies my photo needs. And of course the B&H experience was as always fantastic. I ordered it in the afternoon and had it in my hands the next day before 10am.

Bought new Mac Lion together with Pegasus R4 but only 3 TB showing, on Time Machine. Checked the 4 hard drives, & one had a red light showing, rest blue. took out the hard drive showing red & swapped with one of the other hard drives. Again that new compartment's light went red. Conclusion, one of the hard drives wasn't working. Apple couldn't change just the one hard drive. The whole unit had to be replaced.
New one arrived, all hard drives are on blue so I assumed it would now show 4 TB. WRONG. All 4 seem to be working as the lights are all blue but still only shows 3 TB on Time Machine (2.64 TB after first back-up) Is it really 4 TB or only 3 TB ?

Straight-forward and super easy installation. Excellent instructions. I've noticed that my iMac's performance is not hampered when my system is backing up to the R4 via TimeMachine, even while video editing ... which is nice. Edited a project in FCP X directly off the Pegasus the other day - it's so fast that I don't have to necessarily work off my Solid State drive. I plan to buy another one when my storage requirements demand it, and it's great to know I can daisy chain off this one.
