The 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter from Tiffen offers a unique way of maintaining total control over your depth of field as well as presenting an efficient way to create some special effects. The filter is designed with a built-in rotating ring that controls neutral density ranging from 2 - 8 stops (0.6- 2.4). The heavier the density, the slower your shutter speed will be. This longer exposure allows the shutter to remain open long enough to record the same amount of light but will also create movement within the shot. Another major benefit of this filter is the elimination of having to buy and carry around individual neutral density filters. With this one filter, you can rotate to the degree of ND you want - a real time and money saver.

Simply mount the filter on your lens, set it to "Min" density then frame and focus. Care must be taken with focusing at heavier densities to make sure focus is accurate. However, if it isn't, switch to manual focus and rotate to the desired degree of filtration.

For example, if your standard exposure without the filter is 1/500 @ f/8 and you then set the filter to "Min", you change the shutter speed to 1/125 at the same aperture - thereby losing 2-stops of speed while gaining a hint of "blur" in the image. If that's not enough filtration, continue rotating the filter until you reach the shutter speed you desire. Using the above example, you can even get down to 1/8 second @ f/8 (8 stops). It should be noted that the calibration marks on the filter ring are to be used only for reference and should not be regarded as accurate settings for specific densities.

A Neutral Density filter is used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Since it allows the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would normally not be possible to capture without the filter. And, since it can also help to control your depth of field, it permits you to shoot at wider apertures. Ultimately, its value is in helping to prevent bright, overly washed out images shot in bright light.

The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration.

Thin Profile Ring (9mm) - The wider front filter ring helps reduce the possibility of vignetting (the darkening of corners) at wide angle
It allows you to have continuous control over the amount of light coming through your lens in an approximate range of 2 (ND 0.6) to 8 (ND 2.4) stops

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
ColorCore Technology
The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration

I used this filter to get a softened effect on waterfalls and running water as well as to lengthen the shutter time when taking photos of fireworks. I have only had it for a week or so but it provided very nice pictures and did exactly what I wanted it to do! I can't wait to try it in more situations. The best part is that it is a screw on filter that has several stops built in so you don't have to keep changing the filter... just a very small turn and you are at the next stop up or down. It is compact and you don't have to carry around several filters to do the same thing. I love it!!

The filter works great at 2-3.5 stops and on my 16-35mm I don't get any venting. But 4-8 stops it add a horrible magenta color cast to the picture. So everything green will look brown. I shoot a lot of landscapes so this is a big problem because anything green looks dead.
If you want a Variable ND filter save up and get a Singh-Ray Filter.

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I have had a number of ND filters in the past that so degraded the image quality of the glass I was using that i found myself keeping them in the bag. After much study and review, I purchased the Tiffen ND and I was very, very happy with it's performance. I was able to use it on a 70-200/2.8 on my 5Dmk3 and lost almost no image quality when it was on. I was able to shoot side by side with a Canon c300, which has internal ND filters and the Tiffen held up very well. This is far and away the only screw on ND filter that I would ever trust on a commercial or filming environment

Like a lot a you, I read and watched a lot of reviews...Dave Dugdale's was especially helpful.

I haven't put it through all the paces, but it seems to be working just fine. I like the drag when you're dialing in. Someone here mentioned that the pouch doesn't have a belt loop...and they're right, that would be useful, especially since you can't put on your lens cap.

        For video shooting, it's perfect.

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

Have been using with my 60D DSLR. Does just what I wanted to do, by being able to open up to 4.0 or wider outside to get the narrow depth of field. My shots look great! Don't see the need to spend 4x as much for B + W filter version of this. Just dial in the ND amount you need. Could use a stop mark to not go past the ranges.

This one simple easy to install filter is the only ND filter I'm gonna need. This takes the idea of stacking multiple ND filters and simples places all the stops into a beautifully designed filter. Super smooth adjustment dial, very similar to a polarizing filter. Beautiful Pictures for extended shutterspeeds during bright day light or off sun.

I bought this to do a model photo shoot in a waterfall. The filter allowed me to reduce the exposure 4 stops so that I could use my studio lights. The only downside was that once its installed, you can not use a lens cap or lens hood since you need to be able to reach up and turn the filter periodically.

I have no regrets - it served its purpose and I got some great shots.

This is exactly what I was looking for. The perfect tool to shoot on the open air under the sun. Not that I like doing so, but someties, when run and gun, you have to. In those ocasions, have one of this at hand or get burned. The gradation is nice and a bit loose but good. The only issue is the lens cap, pitty there's no good one.

This variable ND filter makes it easy to shoot nice silky water. Simply set to the MIN setting to lock focus and then increase the filter to get 1/2 second or slower shutter speed. Use manual focus, aperture and shutter speed for best results.
I tried the "Big Stopper" (10 stops) but, it makes focusing a hassle. This variable ND filter (8 stops max) is MUCH easier to use.

There is vignetting at every density level. Which becomes a large, highly visible X through the middle of the frame at the higher end.
Sorry, but don't waste your money on this one.

I use this ND filter for video. I've heard that it has a lot of problems for long exposure stills, so make sure you do your research if you're looking to pick this up for stills. For video though, it works like a champ. I've used it multiple times filming outside on bright sunny days that would normally require me to stop down exposure, taking away my depth of field. With this ND filter you will be able to shoot wide open, even in extermely bright situations. ONE CAVEAT: you cannot attach a hood to your camera if you have this filter on.

I used this on my last hiking trip and was able to take some waterfall pictures.
It is too large to use with the lens hood which is a drawback, but I thought I got good image quality results with the filter.

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

The build quality seems poor - the adjustment ring has quite a bit of play on it as you turn it. It seems to "wobble" a bit too. There is also some dirt inside the filter, but that can be cleaned out by removing one of the lenses. The worst is the X effect you get when the filter is adjusted to it's maximum, so the filter has a much smaller usable range as advertised - unless you don't mind dark X-shaped shadow over your photos.
