Comments about Davis & Sanford ProVista 6510 Tripod with V10 Fluid Head (65mm Ball Leveler):
I bought this product in favor of the similar Bescor model. Two things made me purchase this one instead: first, this is a fluid head, and I want that range of motion. I need smooth tilts and pans, and you're on safer ground with a fluid head, which the Provista has. Second, a found a comment in the Bescor that was similar to my experience: out of the box I broke a lever trying to disengage the quick-release plat. That it happened to someone else confirmed that there is a problem with manufacture and design of the Bescor. So, I ordered the ProVista. I found it to be stable at one stage release. No tripod under $[$] is going to give you stability with two stages released--let's be real. So it's stable at one stage, no complaints. The quick release plate worked fine: popped right off. Unfortunately, the quick release plate was full of lubricating goo underneath. I spent a lot of time cleaning it. I bought this tripod for the head--so let me cut to the chase. While the tilt control is a dream, the pan is a nightmare. There is simply no way to overcome the initial jerk it takes to get this head panning. With the tensioner completely disengaged there's still so much stiffness that you cannot move this thing without jerking it. In the end, you want three things from a tripod: stability, smooth tilt, and smooth pan. This thing is dicey with one, great with the other, and stinks at the third. Hate to say it because I want to encourage manufacturers to build $[$] and below tripods for the new lightweight HD cameras, but I would walk away from this one--I'm returning mine.
