Comments about Switronix DSLR Powertap Regulator Cable for Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 / DMC-GH3 Camera:

If you plan on using this with the Panasonic DMW-DCC8GU, you'll need to do some modifications as the connections don't fit perfectly and often lead to zero connectivity.

The process of modifying the connection is simple enough, cut off both connectors and solder them directly together. Keeping in mind that you'll need to properly strip the wires, solder them, and cover them appropriately; especially if you plan on using it in the outdoors.

This process is made even easier by the fact that there is already a covered and soldered connection on the cable which allows you to reuse the housing if you cut the connection in the same place.

*This will remove the ability to easily switch to an AC connection* (Wall Plug)

Comments about Switronix DSLR Powertap Regulator Cable for Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 / DMC-GH3 Camera:

I purchased two of these Switronix adapters in order to use a pair of GH2s with Anton Bauer Gold Mount battery gear. The AB brick batteries literally power the camera all day long.

I experienced the same incompatibility between the Switronix's coaxial power plug and the inline power jack of the Panasonic DMW-DCC8 external power adapter. The problem is with the Panasonic adapter, not the Switronix adapter. If you fix the Panasonic's connector it will be compatible with a wide variety of external power devices.

The plug and the power jack simply don't make contact on the "sleeve" because the Panasonic jack is too large in its inside diameter. In talking to Switronix about this I got nowhere, which is why I took one star off my product rating here.

My own simple solution: Cut about an inch length of wire braid from some audio cable, flatten it, tin it on both ends, put one end inside the "barrel" of the Panasonic jack, fold it over the end of the barrel and secure it with a small 4" cable tie. The wire braid serves as a semi-flexible conductor to bridge the barrel connection. I've found this fix to be rock-solid reliable with a variety of external power devices that I use, not only the Switronix /Anton Bauer solution.

I really like the constant power indication on the Switronix adapter (the constantly glowing red and green LEDs). This gives an easy, quick visual check of status.

Comments about Switronix DSLR Powertap Regulator Cable for Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 / DMC-GH3 Camera:

I simply cannot recommend the Switronics product. It is getting returned shortly. The plug on the camera side is visibly smaller than the one on the actual GH2 AC adapter from Panasonic. I took a measurement after I noticed the difference visually. It appears to be 1/2-3/4 of a mm too small. This means that when you plug the Switronics box into the DCC-8 there is enough play in the connection for the whole thing to lose ground and the camera shuts off. In fact, when I first plugged it in the camera did not power up. Pretty embarrassing for this to happen at the rental house when I was prepping for the shoot. It was possible to get it powered on by fiddling with the connection, but any movement at all (even just panning on a tripod) caused the thing to lose ground. Furthermore, the d-tap end seems to be larger than an actual d-tap on the battery plate. This means forcing it in every time. I simply cannot tolerate any level of failure on a shoot.

                  Critical for serious video users

Comments about Switronix DSLR Powertap Regulator Cable for Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 / DMC-GH3 Camera:

This is mainly for running your GH2 off AC power, but I found it critical for upgrading the GH2 into a better video DSLR system.

As you might've noticed, the battery door on the GH2 is so close to the tripod mount, that most quick release plates (and cages) block it. Even if you found the right cage & QR plate (which I have), the door will hit your rods.

In short, GH2 batteries drain quickly and are a pain to replace. With this accessory and a Switronix XP-DSLR-GH2 adapter, I'm able to run my camera (and accessories) for a whole day off Anton Bauer mount batteries.

The main caveat: as I dreaded, after 10 minutes of testing the DCC8 it became obvious that the non-locking DC barrel connector won't hold up to professional use. It was very easy to loose power just by twisting it. I ended up chopping the connector and soldering it to the Switronix wire. Since then I haven't had any power continuity issues.

It seems that Panasonic patented this adapter very well or something, since it's impossible to find any other dummy battery module for the GH2.
