So I bought the M-Audio BX5 D2's the other day and honestly before I heard them I planned on returning them because of their size. But after that 3.5 plug got into my jack - there's no way I'm doing that. I have a few specific songs with which I test new audio gear so I can make fair comparisons. My list is as such:Dream Theater - On The Backs of AnglesDream Theater - A Nightmare to Remember - this is a challenging song for audio gear. There are many instruments and plenty of lows to highs, depending on the part of the song (17 minutes song).Metallica - Nothing Else Matters - this is my all time favorite song, gear that can't play it properly just isn't proper gear for me.Dream Theater - One Last Time - I use this song to really look for these tiny bits and details in Mike Portnoy's drumming, things such as Ride's Bell strike or tiny touches of Splash cymbals. Conclusion: I believe the Mids could be just a tiny bit sharper, I feel like they "almost get there" but not quite, as heard in On the Backs of Angels and One Last Time, which is kind of disappointing because I don't like focusing on trying to hear these small details, but rather I like simply hearing them, like I do with my AD700's. So that's a little drawback. However it may be caused because I haven't yet bought a proper stand, therefore the tweeters' position is a bit lower than ideal. Anyway, My second complaint is that the Highs ~might~ sound a tiny bit harsh in certain parts, if the volume is high enough. In Nothing Else Matters - these speakers, or shall I say, monitors were OUTSTANDING. That's because the song mostly concentrates on the Lows and Mid-Lows which is the strong side of the BX5's. I'm even not shy to say that I heard a tiny little detail of which I hadn't even heard with my beloved AD-700's (that detail was James inhaling air, possible that I heard it because the volume was quite high). But those disadvantages are really just nitpicking, because these speakers are a bargain - nonetheless, and I am dead satisfied. I've listened to the Audioengine A2's which cost about the same, if not - more and these are so much better. And about the positioning again: the tweeters are a bit lower than my ears. So I purchaced the Audioengine A5+ stand - thus because the A5+'s are about the same size as the BX-5.Note that these do NOT include cables - you must purchace them separately. Personally I purchaced a double ended TRS -> 3.5mm Audio Cable to connect to my laptop (Macbook Air). It's possible to connect these using either a balanced/unbalanced TRS, or an XLR connection.

These monitors are sturdy and heavy, which inspires confidence in their long term durability. It's rather obvious that they don't give you pristine, clear and linear sound like a pair of Genelecs would, which is not surprising. Once again, you get what you pay for. I got these for a "low ambition" project studio, basically for rough mixes that will later see a lot of fine tuning on more elaborate speakers. If you are recording at home with the intent of having a pro doing your final mixes and/or mastering later, these are an excellent and relatively affordable choice, and spending more money probably won't make too much sense. I record a lot of vocals and acoustic instruments, and they come across with a sort of boomy quality. So, no goosebumps, but all the volume and stability you'd want.

    Comments about M-Audio BX5 D2 Active 70W 5" 2-Way Studio Monitor Speaker (Pair):

These monitors should be good for anyone who looking for professional audio for a small budget. They produce well balanced sound, not as detailed as better and more expensive monitors do. No RFI from HF transceiver at reasonable TX power.

I am a video/film editor and I had a pair of M-Audio BX-5 speakers that I bought 10 years ago for my edit suite. One of them went bad, so after trying in vain to fix it, I decided to buy a new pair. I looked around at other options, but for the price, these looked like they were exactly what I needed. And they are. I've only had them for a week, so I can't give any details about problems that I have encountered.

I am someone who has been building a home studio for some time now, but only recently got around to getting some decent studio monitors. If you are considering getting these in place of basic PC speakers it will be like going from a 1960's era TV to a modern wide screen high def!

I love the little guide lights and the literature that accompanies the monitors to help you position them for the best clarity.

They are very solid, they come with pads to absorb vibration from the shelf they set on, and they look and sound great.

            Best for mixing...

Excellent near-field monitors for production at 3-4 feet.

I like the crystal clear quality, much as with high quality studio cans, without the encumberance and what I believe to be better dynamic range than cans.

You still need to check your mix on car radio speakers, IPod phones etc, but I have found that I can get a really good mix that simply sounds good on just about everything.

The sound is as good as Adam for a third the price.

                  Comments about M-Audio BX5 D2 Active 70W 5" 2-Way Studio Monitor Speaker (Pair):

So I have to start out - I am not an audiophile or trained in sound engineering, design, etc. I am an independent filmmaker who emphasizes dynamic and creative sound design in his work.

I upgraded from a low end 5.1 surround logitech setup to these speakers recently - hoping to start building what could potentially become a good home studio setup. So obviously switching to monitor speakers was mindblowingly better. In speaking to a lot of creative, in house editors, and small scale production houses the M-Audio series was very highly regarded and respected as providing good quality, balanced, and unbiased sound for the creation of general consumer media. As most people consume media through low end speakers and devices it is a practical investment for those at the home studio level. In going through previous film tracks and music the difference is incredible in pointing out flaws in the sounds and frequencies that were previously embellished or compensated by in other speakers and my monitor headphones.

So overall I have been very very pleased, I hope to continue building my personal studio with this product.

I needed a pair of good-quality powered speakers to attach to my keyboard. I originally got a pair of the M-Audio Studiophile AV 40's, due to the good reviews. However, when I hooked those up and played my keyboard with a plain piano sound, they would crackle each time I played a loud chord (and I didn't even have them turned up very loud). So I returned the AV 40's and got these instead. I have been very happy with them--there's enough dynamic headroom to avoid the crackling sound on loud chords, and the sound is very clear (although not as much bass as my Mackie monitors, which I use with my DAW).

These monitors are quite impressive for their size. Their response is very "clean", and they don't color the audio. When mixing and mastering, I like to use a variety of monitor and speaker systems, and these are a great addition.

                    Kudos to M-Audio and B&H!

I can only say good things about this product! For the money, these monitors are quality built, pleasing to the eye and most importantly . . . produce an audio image that has great clearity! Even the low frequency response is great for the size they are. M-Audio has earned my respect!

Excellent monitors for my approximately 27x19 small Project Studio. will order 2 more pairs/subwoofer for surround work.. Was compensating for lacking flat responce by mixing with my own materials with my Creative/Logitech 7.2 surround PC speakers, so don't kid yourself like I did. I'm adding acoustic panels and will measure with a flat mic to compair on a spectrum analyser, so It'll be OK here..

                                Comments about M-Audio BX5 D2 Active 70W 5" 2-Way Studio Monitor Speaker (Pair):

I purchased the M-Audio BX5 D2s for my home studio. I wanted a way to listen to my Podcasts with accurate reproduction without having to be tied down to the desk with headphones (although I am rocking the Grado SR325is headphones). I can see how these are different than "speakers". If the source is poor, it will sound poor, if the source is good, it will sound good. They are a very revealing monitor. What many reviewers have failed to say is how enjoyable they are to listen to. I listened to lots of music through them and absolutely love them for this purpose.

I have to say that I am stunned by how cheap they are. When you consider that they include two amps in each speaker and the build quality, it really feels like a steal. Had I not known better, I would have guessed them to be $400-$500 monitors, but considering they are half that price it's shocking. I'm still trying to figure out the catch. I just can't imaging M-Audio is making much on each monitor.

They are very solidly built...surprising heavy. The quality of the craftsmanship and the materials used are all top drawer. They feature a Kevlar woofer which you tend to only find in higher priced (not going to say higher end) products (my B&W 685s have Kevlar cones so I was pretty excited to find out that these have Kevlar cones too).

I'm feeding them with my Focusrite 2i2 (which if you do not know about the 2i2, do yourself a favor and look it up... another steal). They sound like they were intended for each other.

Overall, it you're looking for studio monitors at a price that won't break the bank, look no further. Couldn't be happier.

Just purchased 1 pair of these but need a total of 3 pairs + the M-Audio sub. A flat "reference" mic and a spectrum analyser is also a must in order to assist me with my acoustic treatment in our project studio. I prefer to sientifically test / caliber theese monitors frequence response. The Behringer ref monitors might be flatter, but I'll make that decition at a later date, and if so I'll get them as my 3'rd pair and use theese as mid and rear surround speakers..

These came recommended to me by several people and have not failed to deliver. In the past I have had trouble with my mixes translating across different systems. However, I've found that if it sounds good on these monitors then its going to sound good wherever you play it. good buy!
