An integrated waveguide helps provide a wide sweet spot, which can easily be determined thanks to the monitor's LED power light. The BX8 D2 has both XLR and 1/4" inputs, and supports balanced and unbalanced signals.

Designed for Accuracy
Whether you're recording, mixing, or mastering, your monitors are your primary reference source. Accurate monitors let you hear exactly what's happening in your mixes and give you the assurance that your music will translate well to other listening environments. The M-Audio BX8 D2 monitors are designed to deliver transparency and sonic definition, for marathon mixing sessions with minimal listening fatigue
Silk Dome, Waveguide-Loaded High-Frequency Drivers
The high-frequency domes are made from natural silk to counter the audible ringing. The high-frequency driver is fully isolated from the rest of the enclosure to ensure minimum distortion, providing smooth frequency response up to 22 kHz. It also features a built-in waveguide, which offers an expansive sound stage and imaging
Kevlar Low-Frequency Drivers
The BX8 D2 monitor's 8" low-frequency driver from woven Kevlar. M-Audio's engineers also created a curved conical design that improves room dispersion. High-damping reliable rubber surrounds provide percussive musical bass, and ensures that the cone reaches its optimal excursion for accurate reproduction. the high-temperature voice coils reduce power compression, allowing your monitors to deliver full performance
Rear-Ported Cabinet Design
The BX8 D2 cabinet is integrally designed with its other components for optimal performance-right down to rounded corners for reduced edge diffraction and superior imaging. The custom rear port is designed to minimize air turbulence and resulting distortion while adding additional low frequency extension
Bi-Amplified Efficiency
The Class A/B bi-amplified design dedicates separate power amps to the high and low frequencies. Combined with a tuned crossover, the design ensures that each driver only delivers the frequencies that it can reproduce most efficiently, resulting in tonal accuracy and sound across the frequency spectrum
Large Sweet Spot
When monitoring, it's important to sit in the middle position or "sweet spot" between the two speakers-where the stereo image is optimized. BX8 D2 features a pinhole power LED that makes finding the sweet spot easy. You'll know you're in the right listening position when the BX8 D2 LEDs appear to be brightest
Bi-amplified design with 130W of distributed power
8" low-frequency drivers with Kevlar cones
1.25" high-frequency drivers with natural silk domes and integrated waveguides
Rear ports for extended low-frequency response
Magnetic shielding eliminates interference with other electronic equipment

I am someone who does solo recording of my music through my computer, utilizing only a MobilPre preamp and a GuitarPort as my sole pieces of "outboard" gear. Though I have been a guitarist/singer/songwriter for close to 36 years now, this is actually my first pair of studio reference monitors. I have, by both choice and necessity, mixed through quality headphones for years without any using any "reference monitors", and done quite well considering. I just always utilized all my other playback options (car, home stereo, friends stereo's, Ipod, etc..)to proof my material. With a recent renovation to my little "micro-studio", I decided to finally incorporate monitors into the "mix" (sorry, couldn't resist). I gambled that the BX8-D2's would be more than ample enough for my needs...and that's a bet that I WON !!! WOW !!! All I can say is that they are all I could have wanted/needed and more !!! These things put out incredible, clear, uncolored sound, with all the sub frequencies of a subwoofer, making the bottom end VERY present in the room. They are WELL worth their price, and I would encourage anyone who might be on the fence regarding the step-up in size(to 8" speakers) costing them a few extra dollars they might not have (like me), that those few extra "dollars to inches" mean the world of difference if you need true/deep bottom end. Otherwise you will just end up with what I like to call a "REALLY good bookshelf speaker"One drawback to this speaker, which I purchased despite the highlighting of it in many reviews (positive and negative), is the slight buzz you hear while there is no playback. It was stated that it was invisible during any type of playback, so I took the chance. I will say that though it is there slightly in mine, they are right that it is undetectable during playback. So,given the MOUNTAIN of sound these speakers offer, at the incredibly reasonable price per pair, when compared to those big name "big money" monitors we'd all love to have (but can't near afford), I'd say these are well worth the investment !!!

I bought these to use as bedroom computer speakers. When they are pumping out music, the quality is phenomenal. Great sound, great clarity, great bass.

They have one fatal flaw: a very noticeable buzzing when there is no signal being provided. As soon as they turn on, and even if no input is hooked up, there is a distinct buzzing that has been absolutely driving me crazy. The volume know on each monitor does nothing to correct this, so it's not an amplification of signal white noise. It's loud enough that I can hear it over low-volume playback, or at pauses in the song. I tried getting used to it, but just can't deal with it, and I'm not going to turn both monitors off every time the music stops. This is a widely reported problem elsewhere, and other users report that warranty service cannot correct the error.

These are going back for a different model.

Great sound, nice looking too. The other pair is quieter than the other. If you turn the volume to say 50, the other pair should be 75 to match. And the blue power led light is on and off. Too heavy to return for exchanged.

I use these in a small recording studio setup for near field monitoring. Great solid sound, loud with minimal loss. Cons - bass outlet at rear of speaker if you have a smaller space positioning may be a problem, however I knew this before purchasing so still a 5 stars for me.

I bought a second pair of these monitors for a B-Room at my studio. Excellent dollar to sound quality ratio. I actually very much like these boxes as I don't need a sub, and like the famous NS10's these have a sound all their own. You get a lot for what you pay for, and these are fantastic!

The speakers are an excellent value, and for the price hard to beat. The major downside is that MAudio insists in putting those red stickers on the front of their speakers "NEW Next-gen monitor..." They CANNOT be removed cleanly and leave a sticky crud or damage whether using solvent (which melts the paint) or heat gun which when hot enough to peel sticker, affects the paint. I have had three sets now with the same crummy stickers. Leave it alone MAudio, don't trash up your nice product.

                    The speakers sound good*

                    * - There was a constant ground hum in both speakers - without any input, just power. I tried different power sources, but I came to find out that this is a persistent issue with these speakers, so I sent them back, coughed up a bit more money and got the Yamaha HS80M's.

My advice, don't waste your time on the BX8's...spend a little more and get the Yamaha's.

4 1/2 stars. Great price for monitors that go for 450+ anywhere else. They sound good and give nice clear response. I have them hooked up to my MBP with a Blackjack Onyx as a pre amp. Use it for video editing, voice over work, and guitar...Some of my lower quality MP3's (As expected) dont sounds so hot on them. The only semi problem I have with these is a buzz they give off, which might be a grounding issue. I am going to order a Furman surge protector and see if that fixes the problem.Over all a solid buy at $ . I would recommend these for anyone looking for entry level monitors on a budget.

                            Comments about M-Audio BX8 D2 130W 8" Two-Way Active Studio Monitor (Pair):

I am not using these for monitoring, but was recommened these by a friend of mine that does plenty of editing.

Anyhow, these have great high end extention and a fairly flat response range with a slight midrange boost maybe. They also have a strong low end and generally just sound great accross the whole range. However, geting into the sub freq they attenuate very quickly below 38hz or so. Which is to be expected from the 8" driver, so I will likely be supplementing in an active sub and crossover eventually. I may even get the M-audio woofer as it is more or less designed to be used with these.

One other rather annoying issue I have with these is the fact that they do have a noticeable hiss however it becomes completely unoticable in use.

Aside from all of that the construction seems very sturdy, although I found it slightly worrisome that there isnt an external heatsink for the amplifiers and the enclosure does become rather warm in use.

All in all, for what I paid for these I cannot complain as they sound great and don't require external amplification.

I was almost the first one who bought a set of these speakers from B&H last year. Absolutely clear sound with a bit of extra (but very solid) low end. My pair was a great match and never had a problem for a year. I use these more often than my favorite Yamaha HS80. Now at B&H's lower price of $ (I paid $ last year and it was still cheaper than other competitor's), heck I would buy one more set.

Just got these and set them up today along with a Focusrite 2i2. I was super pumped to hear them, but when i connected and sat down to listen, it was horrible. I listened to each monitor individually and found that one was a LOT quieter and needed the volume to be almost maxed out to equal the other speaker at half volume. I jiggled the plug and found it would be the proper level if positioned just right. I double checked with another cable and: same problem, which means the xlr jack on the monitor is defective. I assume I could get around the problem by just using a 1/4" TRS plug but I don't have one so I have taped the XLR cord to pull it into the right position.
Another reviewer had the same problem and I'd like to know if it's also the jack.

When I was looking for new monitors, I began looking at the KRK Rokit 8's. They were recommended by a friend. I couldn't believe how much better the BX8's were! These are extremely flat and perfect for mixing! Great bass response too. They are definitely on par with $1,500 JBL monitors that I have mixed on. Best thing you can get in this price range!

They sound great, but the pair i received is not matched, one is nearly 10dB quieter than the other. I've leveled them out with the volume knob on the back. But I shouldn't have to do that. I would send them back, but I'm to broke to afford the shipping on those heavy buggers.
