The Glidecam XR-4000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer represents an affordable way to put your compact camcorder on a floating platform, enabling you to capture the types of professional handheld shots that add dynamic flair to any video production. Smooth camera movement that ranges freely in every dimension is not something you can achieve via dollies or shoulder-mount rigs. For truly unfettered, floating camera moves, you need a gimbal-based camera stabilizer.
The XR-4000 is a complete handheld system, with a dynamic camera platform that will allow you to mount & achieve proper balance for your mid-sized camcorder (4-10 lb), a telescoping central post that allows you to adjust the height of the unit, and a balance platform that supports any combination of the included large and small counterbalance weights. At the center of everything, however, is the three-axis gimbal that lets the camera handle move freely while the rest of the stabilizer stays upright, thereby eliminating the shake that plagues most handheld camerawork.
The design of the Glidecam XR-4000 is tool-free, so you'll be able to set up and achieve balance easily & quickly every time. With practice you'll be steering your camera through three dimensions naturally and smoothly without a second thought, as if the camera platform were a cloud floating through calm skies.
For long periods of operation with the XR-4000, you will no doubt benefit from the addition of an optional support accessory (sold separately), such as a Body-Pod, a Forearm Brace, or a Smooth Shooter or X10 arm/vest support.

this is my second glidecam. i also own the 4000pro it was the version before this unit, they don't make it anymore. this xr4000 has many nice updates from new gimbal, much smoother and central post design. video work is much smoother with the xr4000 than the 4000pro because gimbal is update to the hd gimbal. counter weight setup and design is better than 4000pro. i like all of the updates on the xr4000, it makes it better and footage is vastly improved and seems to be more lightweight

After purchasing this product, I tried to balance my camera (which fits well within the weight limits) for 6 hours. I have experience with balancing cameras on another brand of stabilizer, so I'm not new to this. I followed the manual exactly. I even looked up videos and tutorials. At the end, I was unsuccessful. Then, I thought maybe it was me. I had two other people try to balance this thing - one of them is a senior mechanical engineer. Both of them became frustrated with the unit and gave up.
There are no markings, so you have to deal with everything by feel. Some units are like this, but the issue is, this unit is VERY sensitive. 0.5 mm can throw it terribly off.
Moreover, it's heavy. For extended use, be sure to get the vest.
I really did want to like this. I heard great things about the HD4000, so I decided to get this unit as I was told it's the new reengineered version. This is very affordable and apparently, provides great results for those who can balance it. You will be able to find videos where this unit enables the user to get gorgeous imagery. I'm not saying it doesn't work well. I'm saying it's one of the most frustrating pieces of equipment I have ever bought... this coming from a guy who shoots Canon and Nikon interchangeably - using both interfaces and opposite focus rings - without a second thought or frustration.
