Product Highlights
  • For Smaller Camcorders from 2-6 lb
  • Three-Axis Gimbal
  • Camera Balance Platform
  • (16) Included Counterweight Discs
  • Telescoping Central Post
  • Foam-Padded Handle Grip

The Glidecam XR-2000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer represents an affordable way to put your compact camcorder on a floating platform, enabling you to capture the types of professional handheld shots that add dynamic flair to any video production. Smooth camera movement that ranges freely in every dimension is not something you can achieve via dollies or shoulder-mount rigs. For truly unfettered, floating camera moves, you need a gimbal-based camera stabilizer.

The XR-2000 is a complete handheld system, with a dynamic camera platform that will allow you to mount & achieve proper balance for your small to medium camcorder (2-6 lb), a telescoping central post that allows you to adjust the height of the unit, and a balance platform that supports any combination of the included large and small counterbalance weights. At the center of everything, however, is the three-axis gimbal that lets the camera handle move freely while the rest of the stabilizer stays upright, thereby eliminating the shake that plagues most handheld camerawork.

The design of the Glidecam XR-2000 is tool-free, so you'll be able to set up and achieve balance easily & quickly every time. With practice you'll be steering your camera through three dimensions naturally and smoothly without a second thought, as if the camera platform were a cloud floating through calm skies.

For long periods of operation with the XR-2000, you will no doubt benefit from the addition of an optional support accessory (sold separately), such as a Body-Pod, a Forearm Brace, or an X10 or Smooth Shooter arm/vest support.

I should start by just adding a few things you should have when you get this to make it easy to use. Have a Light Stand. Trying to balance this in your Hand is way too time consuming. Get a Yellow Wax Pen or Tape to mark out your adjustments. IF you swap out lenses or cameras it is wise to mark where you had things set and how many counter balance weights you need. Get a quick release plate so you can take the camera on and off with ease. If you don't have one you will be forced to take the camera off the top mount fully in order to change the battery. Ok now that this just sounded bad for a 4 star rating let me get to the reasons this thing is awesome. Right out of the box and after a few youtube tutorials i had my Canon MKII Balanced. Next Day Shot a wedding. Looks like the camera is floating on a cloud. I was using a 10-24mm lens and when it got dark i changed my lens to a 85mm. It was a lot heavier and totally threw off my balance (because i didn't practice the night before with it). But i put it on the Light Stand and had it balanced again in about 20 minutes while i ate diner. When i wasn't gliding i rested the base on my belly and it remained pretty still. I set it down in a few spots to do some time lapse cuts. You might need to get your popeye arm on because at first my arm was shaking like a leaf and amazingly footage had none of it.

I purchased the glidecam to use with my pro video camera but found it to be a useless piece of equipment.

Adjustments are so difficult to make that it renders the Glidecam almost unusable in a professional environment.

I ended up not using the Glidecam and went and purchased another stability system which is 100 times better and which I use all of the time in my business.

As the Glidecam has no vernier adjustment capability or no visible level indicators, unlike the other brand I purchased, I am suprised that it sells as well as it appears to. However, I have learnt the hard way, and now have a piece of junk which cost me quite a bit of money.

I just hope my comments make someone else think twice before purchasing the Glidecam as it really is not the best piece of equipment when you are relying on it for your business.

Solid camera stabilizer. Most often use with Canon 5d Mkii and Canon 7D. I also purchased the wrist brace that attaches into the foam handle for extra support and am very pleased. Great fluid shots.

Comments about Glidecam XR-2000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer:

        Pros:

Will work with almost any setup:
The cheese plate provided will accommodate any camera with a standard 1/4 inch mount.

        Will improve image stabilization:
From what I can see, the Glidecam shows the largest improvement with shots which are either on un-even surfaces, or in any circumstance where the operator would be moving fast(i.e. running, skating, ect.)

        Fairly easy to set up:
The instructions provided can be a bit difficult to follow at times so I would reccomend seaching for a tutorial on youtube (there are tons out there). Overall, setup can take anywhere from 3-10 min.

        Cons:

        Lack of fine adjustment capabilities:
As you change the setup, even the slightest change in balance will throw the entire equilibrium off. I found that even changing the cameras focus can effect the balance to the point where I would have to re-balance. The XR-2000 does not have the fine tuning knobs which can be found on the HD series. This increases the amount of time required to set up the Glidecam, (took me about 10 min but I'm still getting used to it)

        Weight:
The Glidecam on its own weighs up to 6 pounds (not including the camera). This may not seem like much but for longer shots, this can become tiring especially after a long day of shooting.

        Price:
The price is a bit on the high side for the XR-2000 however I found that the results (once you play around with them for a while are as good as expected) and is far better than attempting to build your own.

        ****IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE****
        BUY A QUICK RELEASE MOUNT
While cameras can be mounted on the provided cheese plate, mounting requires the removal of the cheese plate from the Glidecam, (4 thumb screws) which you will have to replace perfectly if you don't want to re-balance. In addition, if you have a camera which has an SD card or battery door which opens from the bottom, which you need constant access to, you will need to remove the cheese plate, then remove the camera, do what ever it is you need to do,(i.e. change the battery) then remount the camera to the cheese plate, remount the cheese plate to the Glidecam, then re-balance. This process can take anywhere from 2-10 min depending on the complexity of the setup. By buying a quick release you will not have to re-balance due to the camera being mounted at the same position every time.

        CHECK YOUR SETUP
Make sure when you are buying the Glidecam you are buying the Glidecam which is designed for the weight of the setup you are using. If your camera is heavier or lighter than the recommended range, the shots will tend to "sway" up and down as you move.

The Glidecam is a wonderful addition to the filmmaker's toolkit. We've used it for quick interior shoots and also for long exterior shots. It does take a little while to get the balance right and also to get used to operation but once you do, all your shots look hot!

Comments about Glidecam XR-2000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer:

I would say, that for the price you pay, it's a great addition to any equipment you may currently have. I've never used any image stabilizing system before, and so many people recommended that I go with, nothing but, Glidecam Industries. I watched many tutorials on different sites, and found that this piece of equipment is wonderful. For myself, and this is just me personally, I had a difficult time balancing it. Once I figured it out, it only takes about 5 minutes to balance. I'm still learning how to operate the Glidecam, so I don't have the smoothest footage, just yet. I know that with practice comes perfection, so I'm looking forward to this XR-2000 to add some amazing snots to my footage. I've already recommended it to many people, and have boasted about all the great things it can do for filmmakers. It may not come with the fine tunable adjusting plate, but I was told you can purchase it separately down the road, if need be. I'm perfectly happy with my purchase.

I used this product for the first time to shoot a wedding a couple weeks ago and it truly helps eliminate shaky footage. I am currently using the stabilizer with a Canon T3i and kit lens. I also have it balanced with a 50 mm f/1.4. I highly recommend this product to all videographers.

The Glidecam is well made but I just wish the mounting plate was easier to take off. Overall the Glidecam is great but very heavy with my 5Dmk2. I am a big guy and only felt comfortable using it for short periods of time. I do also wish there was an easier way to find the proper balance point.

Comments about Glidecam XR-2000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer:

First of all this review is coming from someone that has used everything from homemade to $1000 stabilizers. The Glidecam XR-2000 is a great stabilizer for budget videographers. Once you get it balanced it is one smooth flying machine. The only thing this lacks is micro-adjustments which is the only thing that separates it from the HD-2000. That and about a couple hundred dollars. It does take some time to balance and a word of advice is to practice, practice, practice. If you want to add production value to your videos but don't want to break the bank, then this is the stabilizer for you. I use it with both a Canon 6D and 70D.

I was able to get it balanced in less than a half an hour....other glide cam's I try like the 4000 were harder to balance, most likely because they are overly complex in their design.

Even though this is price point as far as glide cams go, it is definitely worth the money and was a great gift from my girl...she's a definitely a keeper.

I'm sure I got the wrong one for my Canon 5d mark iii with canon 24-70mm f 2.8l. I think it may be too heavy so when I put the lens on my canon rebel t3i it was easier to balance. Despite having to use the t3i I did enjoy how smooth the video looked. Hopefully I can figure out how to do it better on the 5d but I do like using this and it did ship quick with no problems!

Comments about Glidecam XR-2000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer:

I received the glidecam XR-2000 only a few days before an important out-of-town shoot. I was worried about only having a short time to play around with the settings before getting on the plane. I am happy to report that the product felt very sturdy, smooth in setup and performed admirably. I have used other stabilizers in the past (merlin clone, mono-pods, shoulder mounts) but this was my first glidecam experience. The three-day shoot was glide-cam intensive but after some basic blocking of moves and careful balancing most shots came off well in a few takes. By the second day, I really felt like I was getting a handle on all the balancing tricks and little quirks of this machine. NOTE: The XR does not have the fine tuning knobs which can help with the very minor adjustments needed to achieve perfect balance. TIP: Use a light stand for balance. Get it 95% of the way there and walk your move a few times. You'll soon get a feel for the way it wants to pull based on your actions and can adjust accordingly. Although the fine tuning knobs might have been nice for more $$ or quicker lens changes, this XR was a great workhorse for me. I knocked off some quick settings for each of my primes and made a quick mental note as a starting point and just went from there. I'm sure it will get more dialed each new outing with it. It takes patience. This is a tool and only as good as the operator (just like a lens). Take your time, work it out and you'll be happy. It helps to have a strong arm, as a full DSLR kit on this thing can get heavy after even 2 hours of intense shooting.Patience, patience, patience. Essential part of my kit. Great purchase

Comments about Glidecam XR-2000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer:

I only plan on using this guy with a 17-40mm Canon lens and was pleased to learn that zooming in/out doesn't effect its balance.

The build quality is quite good (absolutely good enough for what it is).

For me the Pro model would have been a waste of money. With this one i set it up once, tightened everything up, marked it, forget it. It can now be dismantled, thrown into bag and setup again with no re-balancing.

Very cool - i expect to get years of use out of this.

Comments about Glidecam XR-2000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer:

When I first got this item and tried to balance my Canon t2i on it, I got frustrated. It took me a while to understand how is this working. (If you are a t2i user, put no weigth plates on the bottom, it worked for me).

Anyway, when you finally get it balanced, this tool is INCREDIBLE. It is a must for every filmmakers with DSLR cameras to improve their shots. I swear to god if you can afford this, it'll make your shots so much smoother and look like the camera is on a dolly or something.

Another thing to think about, is the time it takes to set it up. I mean, when you buy a glidecam, you might want to check for a 'quick realease plate' also. Or else you have to unscrew the whole thing, everytime you want to have your camera handheld or on a tripod. I'll get one as soon as possible.

The thing about having this product is that you can really show your 'filming skills' because you need to master this equipment before using it. Not everybody could take a glidecam, balance it perfectly and take amazing shots.

Well, this is a product i'll never regret buying.

If you never owned a stabalizer before, go watch Glidecam videos on youtube (about this model or others). I spent weeks studying which model (and make) I should buy and it all came down to the XR and HD series from Glidecam. It does take some practice, but the benefits are immediately felt once you handle one of these. Probably the best boost of video production quality I had for such a small price.

I use the XR-2000 for wedding videography and it allows you to create great smooth shots that your clients/friends will love... Great price for what you get... just don't plan on expecting to be able to change lenses and just go... it takes a lot of tedious adjustments, but once it is set it works great! i use this with a Canon T2i and 35mm L 2.8 and it is perfect

I use this in orchard work shooting video of work being done, etc. It's not a silver bullet, but with practice it will definately become a regular tool in my quiver. Set up was involved and every time you remove the camera you need slight readjustments, but once it's locked in it's very impressive. I use it with a QR and had to use spacers to make that fit properly. The screw for attaching the camera to the plate really needs a lock washer as any movment in the camera body loosens it. I am using this glide with a 5D mkII with a 24 - 105 lens.

Helpful hint; the gimbal rotates very easily and you need to hold it gently in place just below it's connection to the post to make turns, or even move forward without it spinning on that axis.
