The Glidecam XR-1000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer represents an affordable way to put your compact camcorder on a floating platform, enabling you to capture the types of professional handheld shots that add dynamic flair to any video production. Smooth camera movement that ranges freely in every dimension is not something you can achieve via dollies or shoulder-mount rigs. For truly unfettered, floating camera moves, you need a gimbal-based camera stabilizer.
The XR-1000 is a complete handheld system, with a dynamic camera platform that will allow you to mount & achieve proper balance for your small camcorder (0.5-3 lb), a telescoping central post that allows you to adjust the height of the unit, and a balance platform that supports any combination of the included large and small counterbalance weights. At the center of everything, however, is the three-axis gimbal that lets the camera handle move freely while the rest of the stabilizer stays upright, thereby eliminating the shake that plagues most handheld camerawork.
The design of the Glidecam XR-1000 is tool-free, so you'll be able to set up and achieve balance easily & quickly every time. With practice you'll be steering your camera through three dimensions naturally and smoothly without a second thought, as if the camera platform were a cloud floating through calm skies.
For long periods of operation with the XR-1000, you will no doubt benefit from the addition of an optional support accessory (sold separately), such as a Body-Pod or a Forearm Brace.

Comments about Glidecam XR-1000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer:
I bought the Glidecam XR-1000 to ease certain moving camera shoots. Unfortunately, the XR-1000 is a very primitive design that's extremely laborious to balance. For the price they charge, I am sure Glidecam could afford to invest in a teeny, tiny bit of R&D and come up with something easier to use. Unfortunately, ALL the Glidecam/Steadicam camera stabilizers are very expensive, probably because they are niche products. I wound up customizing my Glidecam with a couple of Sunwayfoto accessories to make it easier to use, but in retrospect I might have been better off buying a higher-end stabilizer to begin with.

This has been the best purchase yet in regards to accessories for shooting with my HD cam, SLR and GoPros. Everything is extremely smooth, I am spoiled now and pretty much bring the steady cam along even for basic shots.

Comments about Glidecam XR-1000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer:
I read the positive and negative reviews and thought, how hard can this be to align. After buying it, I can say as a trained engineer that it is hard. Not impossible, but hard. We consulted with a friend who LOVES this device and help us tune it. It works for a long, slow stretch (like walking in front of an interviewee. But, it is incredible sensitive and we had to readjust with each take. More creative motions didn't work at all. Finally, we tried adding a quick release adapter, but it weighed too much and we had to resort to bolting the camera down. It took us 10-15 minutes to set up each take. That would get better with experience, but it is definitely an art you will need to master. Proceed with caution.

I purchased this item to use with a digital SLR and it was extremely difficult to balance and it will not stay balanced. It's a awkward product and even after being assured by B&H support that this is a superior product and will work fine we have discovered it doesn't. We even brought it to two local camera stores in our area and they agreed this is not a great product. B&H is an awesome company and sell great things. This line of product needs a serious review. Thanks!

I have been using the glide cam xr1000 with my canon 550d. I have only used it a hand full of times and I think it has already payed for its self in the quality images it gives you. A very good investment and was the best $ I've spent on a accessory for my camera!

Comments about Glidecam XR-1000 Handheld Camera Stabilizer:
This was my first run at a camera stabilizer but everything I had read prior to purchasing my video camera, they seemed to be essential in getting smooth video. I use it with my Canon VIXIA HF-G10. It was easy to put together, very well packaged, solid construction quality, and only took about 10 minutes to get it perfectly balanced. It comes with a plentiful supply of weights as well.
The stabilizer requires a 2-hand operation. With some practice, the shots are very smooth and fluid. It's a little bit of a challenge to get the right touch with the guide/post hand, but once you get the hang of it, it works great.
An absolute essential accessory for this product is some kind of quick release plate, else you're having to remount and rebalance your camera each time. I picked up a fairly cheap Manfrotta quick release plate package where I can pop it off my tripod and snap it onto the glidecam in a matter of seconds. Without the quick release, I would have likely avoided using it at times when it would have taken too long to get setup.
For the price tag, this is one of the more inexpensive ways to pick up a non-DIY version of a camera stabilizer. I'm sure there are other products (much more expensive) out there that may perform better, but for the price/value, I certainly recommend giving this product a try. In my experience and with my specific camera, it suits my purpose well.
