Sony's Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens is an extremely high 24.3Mp resolution camera with the aforementioned lens included. You can start shooting from day one with this combo, the 18-55mm lens of course being just one of the numerous lens options you have for this Sony E-Mount compatible camera. Non-Sony lenses are compatible with the camera as well using an optional adapter.

Known for their compact size, versatility, and interchangeable lens feature Sony's NEX cameras are a digital revolution in the photo world. You can shoot creatively without being worn down by a heavy DSLR rig. In addition, you can also capture 1920 x 1080p HD video, another hallmark of the genre. No matter what you're shooting however, video or stills, the camera's APS-C sensor and the BIONZ image processor work together to help create rich, clear, and incredibly detailed results.

The NEX-7 also features the Tru-Finder OLED electronic viewfinder. This eye-level finder gives you that same old-school feeling and all the benefits of shooting through a viewfinder - less glare and distraction. The OLED also lets you see the results of adjustments in real time as well. Of course, the camera also sports a tiltable 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD screen. The LCD features Sony's TruBlack screen which suppresses internal reflections.

Expanding the tools in your arsenal for the NEX-7 would be the built-in pop-up flash. Take clean, blur-free photos even in low-light situations. The camera also accepts other Sony Alpha system flashes and flash accessories thanks to the hot shoe.

The many shooting functions and modes of the NEX-7 give you the means to express your creativity in numerous ways as well. While the many interchangeable lens options provide a major advantage, features like Sweep Panorama, 3D Sweep Panorama, and Object Tracking help make taking great photos a breeze. And Auto HDR improves your photos by combining highlight and shadow detail from multiple shots for the best possible contrast and detail. Additionally, like those big DSLR's the NEX-7 also puts Program, Aperture, Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual functions at your fingertips, along with many other creative options.

DSLR Quality in Your Pocket
Here's the same APS-C sensor size as a DSLR, with higher resolution than most DSLRs and the interchangeable lenses that make DSLRs so attractive. Yet the camera is about half the size and weight of a typical DSLR camera. Removing the conventional mirror box and viewfinder makes it possible
24.3Mp Resolution
You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements thanks to a 24.3 megapixel sensor. It's the highest resolution among pocket cameras as of August 2011
OLED Viewfinder
There's never been anything quite like the Tru-Finder OLED electronic viewfinder. For size, speed and brightness even after sunset, this is a gem. This eye-level, through-the-lens, viewfinder begins with 2359K dots for amazing resolution and high contrast ratio for incredible depth. OLED reduces motion blur to a bare minimum. You can also see the results of camera adjustments in real time with superb color and detail
Up to 10 Frames Per Second Shooting
Capture the decisive moment in sports and get the ideal baby photo. Up to 10 fps continuous shooting at full 24.3Mp resolution with exposure and focus fixed at the first frame. Standard continuous shooting at up to 2.5 fps
DSLR-Class APS-C Image Sensor
Sensor size is the key to picture quality. The APS-C class sensor provides gorgeous imaging with 58% more area than Micro Four-Thirds sensors and an amazing 13 times the area of a point & shoot image sensor
Full HD Movies at 60p/60i/24p
Capture HD Movies in your choice of super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p, all at Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. AVCHD codec delivers stunning picture quality. MP4 codec offers smaller files for easier upload to the web. Sound can be recorded via the built-in stereo microphone or through the use of an external microphone when connected via the standard mic input
HD Movies with Full Manual Control
Now you don't need to surrender control when you shoot HD movies. Enjoy the full expressive potential of Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority or Manual (P/A/S/M) control in HD movie mode
Tri-Navi Manual Control
Perfect for experienced shooters, Tri-Navi control gives you three separate control dials for direct, hands-on access to three settings at a time. As just one example, the dials can set aperture, exposure compensation and ISO
Built-In Pop-Up Flash
Enjoy the convenience of flash photography everywhere you go. Guide Number 6
Hot Shoe for Alpha System Flashes
Take your photography even further with access to the entire range of Sony Alpha system flashes and flash accessories
Accepts A Mount Lenses Via Adapters
Both the LA-EA1 and EA2 adapters (sold separately) allow you to attach the full range of Sony A mount lenses
Phase Detect AF with Adapter
The LA-EA2 lens mount adaptor (sold separately) is the world's first with Sony's award-winning Translucent Mirror Technology. This provides super-fast and accurate Phase Detection AF when used with Sony A mount lenses
Tiltable 3.0" LCD
Sony's 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD monitor has 921K dots for superb resolution. The TruBlack screen includes a special resin layer to suppress internal reflections, increasing contrast compared to conventional LCDs. Sunny Weather mode boosts visibility even further. Tilts down 45° and up 80° to frame high- and low-angle shots that would otherwise be hit-or-miss
Object Tracking AF
Locks onto a specified object and maintains focus even as the subject moves. Unpredictable subjects stay in focus even while zooming. You can concentrate on composition without worrying about focus
World's Shortest Release Time Lag
Helps ensure that the image you want is the image you get. Once auto focus occurs, release time lag is the delay between fully pressing the shutter release and when the camera actually starts taking the picture. Long lag makes it harder to capture fast-moving objects. The Sony NEX-7 boasts the shortest release time in the world (as of August 2011) at only 0.02 seconds
Accepts Sony E-Mount Lenses
Compatible with Sony's expanded line of E Mount lenses. These smaller, lighter lenses are specifically designed for Alpha compact interchangeable lens cameras. Opens up a world of creative options
Peaking Function
Manual focus becomes much easier because peaking highlights the edges that are in focus in your choice of three colors (white, red, or yellow). This is especially helpful during macro or portrait photography where your focus setting can make or break your shot
3D Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture vast scenic vistas and 16:9 shots in spectacular 3D. As you sweep across the panorama, the camera records separate right-eye and left-eye images that make landscapes come alive on your 3D television7. Records both JPEG and MPO file formats
Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together
6-Image Layering
Leverages the fast BIONZ processor to capture six images in a fraction of a second, and then combine the data. The result is an incredible single image that controls blur in Anti-Motion Blur mode or gets cleaner, sharper nighttime pictures in Hand-held Twilight mode
Auto HDR
High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography captures more scene contrast than a single exposure can handle by combining the best highlight detail from one shot and the best shadow detail from another for one incredible shot
P/A/S/M Modes for Video and Stills
Enjoy a full range of controls for video and still shooting from the beginner's iAUTO mode to P/A/S/M: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build your confidence and exercise greater creative control
Intelligent Auto Focus
Pre-focuses as you compose the shot, further reducing focusing time to a bare minimum
iAUTO Mode
Unifies and simplifies Sony intelligent technologies. Takes advantage of Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection technology, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization without leaving auto mode so you always get the best shot
BIONZ Image Processor
The brain of the camera is a Sony's BIONZ image processor substantially upgraded for the demands of 24.3 megapixel photography. Chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 16000 sensitivity. Also enables fast processing for up to 10 fps continuous shooting of data-intensive 24.3Mp images, 2D/3D Sweep Panorama modes and 6-image layering
Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO)
Improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows. Settings include Auto, Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off
Accepts Non-Sony Lenses Via Adapter
You can use the camera with a universe of lenses from Canon, Nikon, Leica, Olympus and others. The success of Sony's NEX series, combined with the ultra-short 18mm flange back distance has inspired third-party manufacturers to provide lens adaptors. In addition, Sony has disclosed the E Mount specification to Carl Zeiss, Cosina, Sigma and Tamron
25-Point Auto Focus
25 sensors cover a very wide area of the scene, for accurate focusing even when the subject is far from the center of the frame
HDMI Output
Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV. The camera includes an HDMI output
Stamina Battery Power for Up to 400 Shots
Take up to 400 shots on a single charge with Sony lithium ion Stamina battery power (using LCD monitor). Sony's InfoLITHIUM battery system enables you to see the percent of power remaining, so you can keep shooting in confidence
Sony Exmor CMOS Sensor
Sony Exmor technology uses column-parallel A/D converters for high resolution and high frame rates. Double noise reduction minimizes image noise, even in low light
11 Picture Effect Modes
Discover innovative ways to make your images and videos pop. These include Posterization, Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color, Soft High-key, High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, and Miniature
Ultrasonic Anti-Dust System
Dust on the image sensor leads to blemishes in the picture. To protect the sensor, Sony incorporates an advanced ultrasonic system, which effectively shakes dust off the sensor surface

Like many, I have been on the lookout for a high quality small sized camera to augment my Cannon 1Ds MK III, which I use for scenic landscape photography. For a walk around camera I have been using a Canon G-12, which is not bad for its size and weight, but I wanted better, and the NEX 7 delivers. I purchased the camera with the kit lens, and as many have said, it is not the best when compared to "L" type lenses--no doubt!. But that does not mean that it is bad. It just is what it is and is very acceptable for casual use and beyond, if you want to take the time to post sharpen, etc. I will order a bigger Tamron 18-200 to see how that works, but then you are increasing the size and weight of the unit so if that is the primary reason for buying the camera, then it gets closer to a Canon Rebel sized DSLR, and you have to wonder if it is worth it. And that is the quandary with this beautiful camera. With a better lens, is it still good enough to compete with the new Canon Rebel T4i or similar sized DSLR's and have the advantage of a slightly smaller size? On the plus side the camera operates very well. Images are well exposed and the scene mode stuff is really good, even if it is jpeg. For example, the "Handheld Twilight" mode is almost miraculous in its low light ability and clean image. DP Review has done an extensive review of this camera and gave it a Gold Award. Anyone interested in the NEX 7 should check that out. The video is also excellent. There are benefits to the EVF and a few drawbacks as wellsuch as a less clear view as compared to an optical viewfinder, but it is probably the best EVF produced to date. Love the level graphic and live view display. And with light directly hitting the sensor, you will really be surprised how fast your shutter can be. I have found the flash to be problematic, but that may be my fault with exposure comp settings.

I purchased the NEX 7 as an alternative to my 5Dmk2 Canon system for those times when I have to hike long and difficult terrain or I am in an urban situation where I do not wish to "advertise" my gear and still have good hi res files to work with.

In that regard the 7 delivers. Very small and compact, but feels good and is easy to operate even in my large hands. Build quality is very good - excellent.

I also purchased the 55-210 zoom so the kit 18-55 and this give a great spread. However, my walk around for the 5Dmk2 has always been the 24-105 so I am used to getting by with one lens. This two lens approach is a real compromise. I may have to consider the 18-200. Neither of the two lenses I have do the sensor justice. I am used to L glass and these have no pretense to that level of quality. Sony needs to get their act together to make the NEX package a real winner in that regard.

As others have noted, the menu system is deep and somewhat complex. There are "info" windows that pop up every where you go. After the second or third time they get VERY annoying. I did finally stumble onto the setting that turns them off.

In continuous mode the frame rate is rather astonishing and there is no meaningful shutter lag. There are several focusing modes and the auto focus is quite fast.

The biggest disappointment for me is the astonishing lack of useful auto bracketing in RAW. The 7 is presently limited to a preset of .3 or .7 EV in a three shot bracket. REALLY? Makes you wonder if the design team ever talked to a knowledgeable experienced photographer.

I have bracketed 90% of my shooting for years now, (-2, +2) allowing the option for post HDR processing. This is impossible on the NEX 7 except in the manual mode. The likely hood of adjusting the super light 7 for 3, 5, or 7 shots with out disturbing the camera, even on a tripod is a real gamble.

Of course, the 7 brags about its built in HDR. In fairness, it works rather well if your only interest is salvaging details in bright scenes. It fires off three shots so fast there is hardly time for camera movement to become problematic, and you get the 0 EV shot as well as the combined image. If you are happy working with JPG and don't want to do the post HDR yourself, great.

I think the pro and pro - enthusiast demographic this camera appeals to will not be happy with the lack of (real) RAW bracketing, and the huge choices available for in camera "creative" effects are pretty much wasted on those shooters as well.

This particular shortfall is nothing more than an easy change in firmware and I wish upon a star that Sony will smile upon us and release an improved firmware sooner than later. Oh yeah.... and provide some "L" grade zoom lenses for this little beauty too.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I bought mine about three months ago and am amongst the rave reviewers. My other camera is a Nikon D800, costing more than three times as much. The NEX-7 photos are nearly as good and the system weighs nothing compared to D800 and lenses. I bought it for hiking and other uses not demanding a Sherman tank and it completely fulfils my needs.
      I have only two gripes:
      1. The non-standard flash attachment.
      2. The EV dial many complain about. I wish I could reprogram it for ISO or something else. I don't usually make EV corrections.

I don't use video but can understand complaints if true.

It has been interesting learning Sony speak.

Because I messed up cleaning the sensor I am getting an experience with Sony service. So far so good...easy to get instructions and mail in. I can't wait to get it back!

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I've been looking at a mirrorless camera for about two years as a backup to my 5D MarkIII. After a week at DisneyWorld with the MarkIII on my shoulder, it was time to make a decision. I love the megapixel count, the focusing system, and the customization of bracketing.I've only been on one shoot with the NEX-7 and once on location I found the settings and the menu cumbersome. I know that will get better as I use the camera more. The menu is not as intuitive as I would like.I shoot a lot of HDR so the bracketing feature is very important to me. I already miss not being able to choose the 2-sec timer with bracketing. You can only choose the timer or the bracketing. Sony needs to fix this with the next Firmware update.I chose the NEX-7 over the Fuji mainly because of the lens selections with Sony.I'll have a better feel for the likes/dislikes after using it for about 3 months.

I bought the Sony Alpha Nex 7 to use as the video camera for aerial video to be used with our DJI S800 and NEX 7 setup Z15 Zenmuse gimbal and it works perfactly for that application...but it is such a high quality 24.3 Mp camera that we are using it for applications off of our hexcopter video platform. Great camera, and B&H are a great dealer that I come back to over and over.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

Just got it and with no time to study its features have taken fantastic pictures on 1A as promised! I'm A 79-year old female and very comfortable with this camera. Perhaps I should have waited on touch-screen feature and I was inconvenienced in that the "free" bag did not provide ample room for the camera plus lens ... later found one on B&H site for $12.95 and purchased that (with B&H $15.00 credit) and a slightly larger Kata bag. Look forward to much fun with my NEX-7.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

My camera arrived with some kind of sensor problem - which might be dust according to Sony. Unfortunately Sony did not follow up with phone calls when expected so the problem has not been nailed down until today which is past the 30 day window B&H allows for returns. I have also had a broken foot which has hampered me from doing much shooting the last couple of weeks - this contributed to the problem. So my advice is, if you buy this camera to be sure and get some test shots right away of skies and/or light solid colored backgrounds to test the sensor. If you push the ISO higher you can see the spots in the electronic viewfinder when looking at light backgrounds.

The quality of the photos is excellent. I wish the menus were a bit simpler, but still this has more manual control (i.e. knobs and buttons) than most mirrorless cameras.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I've been waiting for the proper small size camera with hi-res for some time.
the camera is very tiny. shutter release is immediate. just as would be SLR canon or nikon. file quality is great. I've tried at 16,000 in more or less darkness and shutter was at around 1/4 of a second, hand held. processed with capture one 7. the grain quality is excellent. I've not yet tried with sony's software. fast shooting sequence is fast. around 6 fps. Love the color base fitration option. large variety of ways to set up camera shooting. It's not particularly elaborate or time consuming to get used to. Oled screen very hi-res. only bug, for me is that eye needs to be pretty close to viewer for screen to factually shut of. am guessing there might be an easy enough solution for it. Even if little outdated, this camera, to me, still stand the competition.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I sold my Canon 5D Mark iii (my dream camera) and bout the NEX-7 along with the 10-18mm lens and the 55-210mm lens.
I am getting the same quality end results as I did with my Canon in a MUCH SMALLER & LIGHTER PACKAGE!
After just 2 weeks I have shot 2500 exposures wit it.
I've shot family pics, a day at Disney World & I even shot 1100 exposures for a wedding last weekend. It is great for landscapes and HDR photography especially with the 10-18mm lens.
I am extremely pleased with this camera!
Great photos! and a VERY SMALL FORM FACTOR. I also do not get a soar shoulder when carrying it around all day.

My camera plus the 2 additional lenses I bought weigh less than my original 5D Mark iii.

I was excited about having a small camera that had speed and high resolution to substitute my large SLR's. Unfortunately, this did not make the grade. First, the viewfinder is too tiny for my aging eyes. I aso didn't like the controls with the two knobs on top of the camera. Batteries don't last long and recharging takes hours.

The pro's are it's light. The resolution of pictures is excellent and it has a variety of options if you want them. I was encouraged by some professionals recommendations but it doesn't work for me.

I selected this specific camera because of the larger difference in megs between the NEX 7 and the other Sony Alpha's. I get amazing color and and very satisfied with the ease of use of the camera. One of the best pro's of this camera is that you can change the f-stop and ISO and watch the resulting image of the display change accordingly.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

For decades I have been using Nikon SLRs, from the Nikon F and Nikkormat of the 1960s to the D7000. Yet I have always longed for a camera the size and quality of the older Leica M series of the 1950s and the Series III which preceded it. For me a camera must be small enough to carry easily, fast and ergonomic in all handling aspects, and must offer quick manual adjustments of exposure, focus, and in our digital urea, sensitivity. My Nex 7 does not disappoint, at all. I also purchased from BH the new Sony 35 mm f1.8 OSS lens, and it is a gem to handle, to focus, and use, like using a Leica with a Summicron f2, but with auto focus and image stabilization! All my Nikon gear, the D7000, lenses, flash have been sold on @. With the 35 mm f1.8 , Nex 7 weight is same as that of my Canon G12.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I have used (and still use) Nikon professional cameras, lenses, etc. for years, but wanted a smaller bag and equipment to carry for some shooting situations and to have with me at all times. The camera is lightweight but sturdy with an array of lenses that allow me to shoot almost anything. Fine controls for white balance, saturation, contrast, flash are superb. I love this camera and am still learning what it can do. Interesting surprise is the tilting LCD screen -- a waist level finder or great assist shooting over my head. Haven't purchased the larger external flash yet, but likely will do so.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

Up to 13x19 enlargement I see no difference between NEX-7 and my Nikon D800 at lower ISO ranges. Nikon will go up for sale soon. I use the camera for landscapes, florals and copy work. It's small, lightweight and very portable. Exemplary image quality and malleable files. A relief not to have to
carry a full frame DSLR. I find myself taking the camera with me much more frequently than I would have with a bigger DSLR. When I return from a photo expedition I know that I have not compromised image quality. Would have preferred a full frame. Anticipate that Sony has a full frame compact camera (as in RX-1) with interchangeable lenses in the works.

I have a Canon with zoom lenses and its so heavy I often don't get it out when I want to take a picture . this camera with lens where is less than the actual Canon SLR body . much easier to pop out and take some pictures . the quality of the pictures are excellent . full automatic or you can control every option on the camera very versatile .

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I received this camera as a Mother's Day present from the hubby. I love it! So far, I've just been taking pictures of my son and flowers outdoors. I can't wait to test it out and take pictures of the local sceneries. I'm also excited about the panorama feature it has.
I own a Nikon D7000 and is super happy with it for almost 2 years now. I like to travel and I took tons of pictures with it, but it can get heavy after a short while having it around your neck, and so I carried a small Canon Elph HS as a second camera when it got tiring handling the DSLR. With this CSC, I'm pretty happy. The main things I love about this camera is how light it is in comparison and the pictures turn out great with the right settings. I didn't have to do any editing afterwards. Plus, the controls are not difficult to figure out. It's not bad in low light either.
I haven't noticed anything that I don't like about this camera yet, but with further use and if I stumble on any cons, I'll update this review. I did notice that the built in flash pops out and looks kind of flimsy, I hope I won't have any issues with that breaking in the long run. I also think it's kind of odd how the viewfinder is digital. I guess it's just because I'm used to a non-digital one. It looks to fake and grainy, I guess I just need to get used to it.
