The Sony Alpha SLT-A65 DSLR Digital Camera (Body Only) is a DSLR with a multitude of features. If you're looking for new and game-changing aspects, the SLT-A65 has them. Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology system is one for starters. This technology allows the camera to both shoot and focus with speed and accuracy by directing light to the image sensor and the Phase Detection AF sensor. Another huge advantage to the camera - perhaps the most notable - is the 24.3Mp APS-C sensor - this gives you the ability to make huge prints and to experience detail that's absolutely outstanding.

What else, you ask? Well, let's see, how do you feel about an OLED viewfinder or shooting at 10 frames per second? How about HD movies with full manual control? Or the ability to utilize Live View with both the viewfinder or the tilt/swivel 3.0" LCD? The SLT-A65 gives you the options you need to take your photos and videos to the next level. When it comes to low-light or night scenes the SLT-A65 doesn't leave you in the dark. The built-in flash allows for spur of the moment or snapshot capture, while the integrated hot shoe lets you add on flashes or other flash accessories.

The camera's APS-C sensor works with the BIONZ image processor to ensure that whatever you're shooting the results are stunning and efficiently processed. These systems also work together to reduce noise and enable fast, continuous shooting such as is necessary to shoot 10 frames per second or for 2D/3D Sweep Panorama modes and 6-image layering.

No matter what you're shooting - video or stills - every file is stored to external memory in one of the two media slots. Dual media slots help you to shoot longer and provide you with the option of storing two different cards at once. Fill one with Memory Stick media perhaps and the other with SD/SDHC/SDXC cards if you feel like it.

Your image making is also afforded flexibility thanks to any of the numerous shooting modes and functions. Full-Time Phase Detection AF, for instance, ensures accurate auto focus no matter how you're shooting - even when in HD Movie and Live View modes. Additionally, Full-Time Live View for the LCD or electronic viewfinder ensures that what you view on the screen is what you'll get on the finished file. That means white balance, focus, depth of field, exposure, and framing all are accurately reproduced.

Other ways that the SLT-A65 enhances and expands your creativity includes a short lag time, Object Tracking AF for keeping moving objects in focus, and Multi-Frame NR for shooting successfully in low-light without a flash. Graphic Display, the Dynamic Range Optimizer, SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization and a built-in GPS are just a few of the many other ways in which the A65 ensures that a full breadth of creative options is at your disposal each and every time you shoot.

2nd Generation Translucent Mirror Design
Other DSLRs can shoot. Or they can focus with the speed and precision of Phase Detection AF. They cannot do both at once. Sony changes all that with the award-winning Translucent Mirror Technology system. It directs light to both the image sensor and the Phase Detection AF sensor simultaneously
24.3Mp Resolution
You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements thanks to an APS-C sensor with 24.3 megapixels
Ultra-Fast Up to 10 Frames per Second Continuous
The translucent mirror makes it far easier to capture the decisive soccer kick or your baby at her absolute cutest. Shoots up to 10 frames per second at full-resolution 24.3 megapixels with continuous auto focus (AE locked after first frame)
OLED Viewfinder
There's never been anything quite like the Tru-Finder OLED electronic viewfinder. For size, speed and brightness even after sunset, this is a gem. It begins with 2359K dots for amazing resolution and high contrast ratio for incredible depth. OLED reduces motion blur to a bare minimum. You can also see the results of camera adjustments in real time with superb color and detail
HD Movies at 60p, 60i, or 24p
Capture spectacular HD Movies. This is the world's first DSLR to offer a choice of super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p, all at Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. AVCHD Progressive codec delivers stunning picture quality. MP4 codec offers smaller files for easier upload to the web
HD Movies with Full Manual Control
Now you don't need to surrender control when you shoot HD movies. Enjoy the full expressive potential of Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority or Manual (P/A/S/M) control in HD movie mode
Full-Time Phase Detection AF
You get fast, accurate auto focus in every mode-even HD Movie and Live View-thanks to Sony's exclusive Translucent Mirror Technology. While Contrast Detection Auto Focus often hunts for correct focus, Phase Detection AF knows exactly where correct focus is, and goes straight for it
Full-Time Live View in LCD or EVF
You can use both the LCD monitor and OLED Electronic Viewfinder for composing shots in Live View. Both provide a what-you-see-is-what-you-get preview of white balance, focus, depth of field, exposure and 100% framing accuracy, plus informative on-screen displays
World's Shortest Release Time Lag
Helps ensure that the image you want is the image you get. Once auto focus occurs, release time lag is the delay between fully pressing the shutter release and when the camera actually starts taking the picture. Long lag makes it harder to capture fast-moving objects. The Sony A65 boasts the world's shortest DSLR release time lag at only 0.05 seconds (as of August 2011)
Object Tracking AF
Locks onto a specified object and maintains focus even as the subject moves. Unpredictable subjects stay in focus even while zooming. You can concentrate on composition without worrying about focus
6-Image Layering
Leverages the fast BIONZ processor to capture six images in a fraction of a second, and then combine the data. The result is one incredible single image that gets a cleaner result in Multi-Frame NR mode or sharper nighttime pictures in Handheld Twilight mode
Multi-Frame NR
Experience incredible low-light shooting without a flash. The camera captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data from all six, it creates a single image with a reduction in noise equivalent to two additional steps of ISO sensitivity. Sensitivity selectable up to ISO 25600
Handheld Twilight Mode
Get gorgeous shots at night without a tripod. Combines six frames into a single image for smooth, low-noise evening shots
Auto HDR Built Into Camera
Captures more scene dynamic range than a single exposure can handle-and more range than photo film. Combines the best highlight detail from one shot, the best mid-tones from a second and the best shadow detail from a third for one incredible shot
3D Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture vast scenic vistas and 16:9 shots in spectacular 3D. As you sweep across the panorama, the camera records separate right-eye and left-eye images that make landscapes come alive on your 3D television. Records both JPEG and MPO file formats
Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together
Shot Result Preview
See the results before you take the shot. This preview takes the guesswork out of camera settings by showing the effects of the aperture, shutter and DRO settings on the depth of field, motion and dynamic range
Tilt-Swivel LCD Screen
Tilt it up or down to frame high and low-angle shots that would otherwise be hit-or-miss. Tilt and swivel under the camera for self-portraits. Finally, the monitor folds flush to the camera with the LCD exposed for shooting or protected for travel
921K Dot TruBlack LCD Screen
Sony's 3.0 inch Xtra Fine LCD monitor has 921K dots for superb resolution. The TruBlack screen includes a special resin layer to suppress internal reflections, increasing contrast compared to conventional LCDs. Sunny Weather mode boosts visibility even further
Main Sensor Quick AF Live View
Combines the fast focus of Phase Detection AF with high quality Live View images right from the main sensor. This is made possible by Sony Translucent Mirror Technology. You get accurate images and 100% framing on the LCD monitor or eye-level viewfinder
ISO 16000 Sensitivity
Incredibly clear low-light pictures without sacrificing detail, made possible by the low-noise Exmor APS HD CMOS image sensor and refined BIONZ image processor
AUTO+ (Advanced Auto) Mode
Get cleaner, more dynamic pictures and fewer missed shots. Unifies and simplifies Sony intelligent technologies. The camera automatically recognizes the correct scene mode
Graphic Display
Clarifies the relationship between aperture and shutter speed, as well as the effect each has on photographic results
Upgraded BIONZ Image Processor
The brain of the camera is a Sony's BIONZ image processor substantially upgraded for the demands of 24.3 megapixel photography. Chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 16000. Also enables fast processing for up to 10 fps continuous shooting of data-intensive 24.3 MP images, 2D/3D Sweep Panorama modes and 6-image layering
Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO)
Improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows. Settings include Auto, Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off
1200-Zone Exposure Metering
Reads exposure directly from the main image sensor. Choice of Multi, Center and Spot metering accommodates a full range of shooting situations
SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization
Image stabilization reduces blur by compensating for camera shake. Typical DSLR systems build image stabilization into selected lenses only. SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization is built into the camera body itself. You'll reduce blur with every A Mount lens, including macro and wide-aperture standard zoom lenses
HDMI Output for HD Viewing
Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV. The camera includes an HDMI output. In addition, the BRAVIA Sync system works with compatible Sony BRAVIA HDTVs enabling you to control camera playback using the television's remote
Up to 560 Shots of Battery Life
Take up to 560 shots on a single charge with Sony Stamina battery power. Sony's InfoLITHIUM battery system enables you to see the percent of power remaining, so you can keep shooting in confidence
P/A/S/M Exposure Modes
The camera offers a full range of controls from the beginner's AUTO+ mode to P/A/S/M: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build your confidence and exercise greater creative control
Advanced Anti-Dust Technology
Anti-Dust Technology helps keep the CMOS sensor clean, resulting in consistently clear pictures. First a static-free coating on the sensor's low-pass filter helps repel dust. Then vibration automatically dislodges dust from the sensor
Built-In Flash (GN12)
To help you shoot more effectively, the camera includes a built-in flash (Guide Number 12) that can also trigger a wireless accessory flash (sold separately). The integrated hot shoe enables you to expand your lighting options with a range of accessory flashes
Slot for Two Media Types
For cost-effective, convenient storage and sharing of your images, the camera accepts Memory Stick PRO Duo/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and SD/SDHC/SDXC media
APS-C Size HD CMOS Image Sensor
With 19.5 times the area of the typical camcorder image sensor, APS-C makes the difference between amateur and professional-looking video, delivering an exceptional combination of high resolution, high sensitivity and gorgeous, blurred backgrounds
Sony Exmor Technology
Conventional image sensors use only a handful of analog-to-digital (A/D) converters, which can slow you down. The Exmor sensor provides more than 5,600 column-parallel A/D converters. This helps enable continuous shooting at up to 10 frames per second
11 Picture Effect Modes
Discover innovative ways to make your images and videos pop. These include Posterization (Color, B/W), Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow), Soft High-key, High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, and Miniature
Face Detection and Registration
The camera can automatically detect up to eight individual faces and adjust focus, exposure, white balance and flash to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of people. Can prioritize children or adults. Face Registration can remember friends and family members and prioritize them
Smile Shutter Technology
Captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply select the Smile Shutter mode and the camera takes the picture automatically. You can prioritize children or adults and adjust the smile sensitivity
15-Point Auto Focus
To maximize the value of Translucent Mirror Technology, Sony incorporates Phase Detection AF of great sophistication. Fifteen sensors with 3 cross sensors maximize precision for both vertical and horizontal subjects

I bought my A65 body to extend the usefulness of my collection of legacy Minolta AF (Maxxum series, so-called A-mount) lenses. What I didn't realize was what a terrific camera it is, lens compatibility aside.

First, the A65 body is indeed *fully* compatible with all of my Minolta AF, Konica-Minolta AF, and 3rd-party licensed Minolta AF (A-mount) lenses (running the gamut from 16-mm fisheye to 300-mm telephoto with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters). The A65 controls those legacy auto-focus lenses with sensitive and accurate auto-focus and aperture controls, and of course manual focus is still always available. (Auto-focus performance had been a concern of mine when I took the plunge and bought the body.) The camera's multi-point auto-focus feature works well.

Second, the performance of the body itself is outstanding. I have used my A65 to take still and motion-picture photography of a rocket launch to Mars, an 18th-century cannon-firing drill, a total lunar eclipse, and sea otters and elephant seals. I mention these because they are about the most challenging targets that photography offers. They require the use of extremely long focal lengths outdoors, in breezes or worse, under sometimes low-light conditions. And you can't get a second chance on these things--the camera has to work properly the first time. My A65 has consistently worked well in these circumstances.

The manual controls have performed flawlessly, as have the automatic controls. The on-board tutorial material for camera operation is easy to access and informative. It's not clear from current on-line documentation, or even in the camera's own user manual, whether a bulb setting is available (needed, e.g., for astrophotography). Don't worry--it's there.

I love the digital frame-view operation. It is excellent for through-the-viewfinder use, as well as the big on-the-camera-back mode and in its flip-down-below-the-back-when-it's-up-high-on-a-tripod mode. The flip-down-below-the-back position is good for holding the camera above your head to shoot over the heads of a crowd, too. Its switcher has an excellent intuition for where your head is, in terms of auto-switching between the view-finder and the big-frame-on-the-camera-back position. And if you want to lock to one mode or another, you can do that. It still feels a little weird sometimes, to not be able to see through the viewfinder until the camera is turned on, but I've become used to it.

The HD video and still quality are amazing--the 24 megapixel array's performance is outstanding, with wide dynamic range, high speed, and excellent color reproduction. It takes professional-level video if you use a tripod and an external microphone. The video files are natively compatible with both PC and Mac video-player and editing apps, at least if you record in the MPEG-4 mode. (I'm not sure about the platform compatibility of the alternate AV-HD file format that's available--I haven't tried it yet.)

The anti-shake feature works reasonably well, but be warned: since the digital array is smaller than the classical 24x36 mm frame size for which most lenses are spec'ed, the camera gives you 1.5x the *effective* focal lengths marked on your lenses. This magnification factor is normal for DSLRs and DSLTs because of their relatively small physical array dimensions. But it means that you must have a VERY stable tripod for lenses with marked focal lengths of 300 mm and above, because now they will effectively be transformed to 450 mm and above. It also means that, if you want to do wide-angle photography, you might need to invest in an even wider-angle lens than the widest one that you've currently got in your arsenal.

The A65's built-in microphone for videos is decent. But as with all body-mounted, built-in mikes, even a slight breeze generates an annoying whooshing sound in the video soundtrack. To mitigate this, I have found that an external shotgun-pattern microphone with a wind-sock cover, plugged into the A65's auxiliary input and gaffer-taped to the tripod to track the camera's pointing direction, works nicely.

If you are going to shoot stills in the fastest-firing frame mode, you need to have a fast (and therefore relatively costly) digital memory card installed. Otherwise, a point will come in the shooting sequence where the camera will stop taking frames so that the memory can catch up.

Overall, I have found the A65 to be an outstanding performer at a reasonable cost--an excellent value for the money. Once you have it, though, you may find yourself wanting/needing to invest in: a high-performance (fast) memory card for high-frame-rate shooting; a better tripod for your long lenses; a good fluid tripod head for videos; a wider-angle lens than the widest you've currently got, to compensate for the 1.5x magnification factor of the digital array size; a remote-control, electronic cable release (it *is* compatible with the legacy Minolta AF series remote releases); and a good external microphone with a wind sock for outdoor video shooting.

Postscript: I didn't think I'd do it, but I ended up buying one more lens for my A65. It's Sony's Zeiss Sonnar 135-mm, f/1.8. It's heavy and pricey but its speed and sharpness are fabulous; I think it's an excellent lens for this body.

This camera has better image quality and color than the slt-a57 which I tested before I purchased this camera. However the noise level of the a65 was still unacceptable for me and I returned it. I thought that since the a65 is better than the a57, I would try out the a77. The a77 was a fabulous camera, great color, fast responsive, etc. BUT THE NOISE WAS WORSE THAN THE a65. The reason I'm shouting about the noise is that Sony makes great cameras but I think their only major issue is the noise factor (which I have with my Sony point and shoot as well). This is unfortunate as their cameras are faster, more responsive and enjoyable to use than the Nikons I tried, however the noise is what kills all their cameras (at least the ones I tried out and the point and shoot I own). Next stop for me is Canon. I hope I'll be happy there.

Comments about Sony Alpha SLT-A65 DSLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I'm not a pro or a techie, but I have been taking photos for 50 years. My first "real" camera was an Argus C4 that I bought used when I was 14. Cameras have sure come a long way since then.
This a65 is just the camera for the beginner who wants to get serious about photography. Put it on auto and just click away or take advantage of all the fantastic options this camera offers.
I have owned the a65 for about a month so I'm still learning. So far the camera has not disappointed me. Good image quality, fast auto focus and the continuous shooting drive is super fast (on Hi).
I use this camera primarily for wildlife photography and, for me, it's ideal. Fast and quiet. All of my lenses including a Sigma 150-500 function perfectly with it.
I recommend this camera for the aspiring photographer. You won't out grow it anytime soon.

I had the a55 for 2 years before purchasing this. i did a lot of research and really wavered between this and the a77. i got lucky enough that i had the money during the 4th of July sale and the decision was basically made for me. no regrets at all. full video control and 24mp quality is amazing given the price I paid. very fast burst control mode and overall, it's a great camera.

This is such a fantastic camera. I can't say it enough. A little fuzz in the high ISO, but when that's ISO 16,000 what can you say? Unlike other makers, Sony still supports beautiful old lenses and build great new ones. The OLED EVF is so great. I wish I'd been won over sooner. I would like the grip to be slightly larger, but its still great. Oh...and 10fps for $? GIMME!

Comments about Sony Alpha SLT-A65 DSLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I've been using the a55 for the past 3 years. Unfortunately it died on me at Acadia National Park (about 60,000 pictures overall). The folks at B&H were very helpful in selecting the a65 as the most comparable current Sony to the a55. The camera was shipped overnight so that there was minimal interuption to my vacation.
Very similar to the a55 with a few different features and higher resolution. It took a little bit of time to adjust to the new location of some of the buttons, but a fairly easy transition overall. I have about 600 pictures since purchased and I'm very happy with the camera so far.

I am delighted with the clarity and tone of the photos taken to date and am very pleased with the Sigma 18-200 lens I ordered with it as well.
As I need other lenses in my photography, I feel this camera will always do them justice.

Comments about Sony Alpha SLT-A65 DSLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I have used all my cameras mostly as a casual photographer taking photos of family functions and vacations. I own several lenses from my Minotla/Konica 35mm cameras so six years ago I purchased my first Sony Alpha DSLR. So I finally decided it was time to upgrade my camera body since I wanted to print some larger cropped and un-cropped prints more than 8" by 10". This camera has the engine of the A7 but without having to pay that flagship price. While some features are missing from the flagship DSLR camera the A65 delivered with having the same pixel count and the majority of the necessary features.

The liveview feature and the clarity of the viewfinder are excellent. The ability to photograph 10 frames without buffer issues, that I had in my older alpha camera, is a blessing to getting the perfect shot to pick from. I can then place the photos into the computer and with a little Sony software magic, they are something worthy of an entry into a photo contest. I haven't had a lot of time with the camera, but there's one thing that isn't so great about it. Picking some camera operations is confusing. Several times I've unsuccessfully tried to pick a function or menu item to have the camera inform me that's not available in the mode I've selected. Then I'll have the camera already setup and lose a photo opportunity having to change the mode dial so I can make the selection I wanted; since I don't typically shoot in Auto or Auto+ (both work great though) mode. I'm hopeful that once I memorize the choices that aren't available for certain dial settings this won't be an issue.

I bought this as an update from and A55 and am very satisfied. The electronic viewfinder is excellent and battery life is much improved compared to the A55. I also like the in-body lens correction (for many Sony lenses) for vignetting, chromatic aberration, and geometric distortion. Very satisfied with this purchase!

This camera does everything I hoped it would and was advertised to do, and more, and faster. I really cant stress how well this camera works. If you need advanced auto, it works great! If you know what you're doing and want to manually set things up, it's the easiest to adjust manual settings I have ever used. Also being able to see a representation of the exposure in the viewfinder along with a live histogram is great for getting your shot just right befor clicking the shutter. Also the image stabilization while shooting video is AMAZING! Makes just a steady hand look similar to a steadycam! Can't say enough good things about it, in love!

Comments about Sony Alpha SLT-A65 DSLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

Needed to upgrade my camera from a Sony A200 due to shooting a lot of sports/action photos, yet had all of the lenses I needed to fit an AF Sony camera. Started reading about the A65 and it had all the features I was looking for. And guess what? It didn't disappoint! Fast auto focus, shutter release time, minimal ISO noise at higher ISOs, and too many more features to name. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone looking for a new or an upgrsde for the camera you have now.

Comments about Sony Alpha SLT-A65 DSLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I am an amatuer photographer who has been shooting with a Sony since the A100. While it seems that most people look down on Sony, preferring Nikon on Canon, I think Sony has some wonderful cameras. The A65 is incredibly fast, produces razor sharp images (if you don't have the cheapest lenses), and is incredibly user friendly. The body feels comfortable in my hands and 95% of the buttons feel smart in their placement. If you want to upgrade to the A77 for the magnesium frame, I think it would be worth it, but cost was a factor for me and the A65 has the same firmware and specs. Overall, a great camera and I look forward to continued success with Sony's Alpha series.

I upgraded from A230 to the A65, I sure do notice a magnificent difference and the speed. I have been using the 70-200mm F/2.8 telephoto zoom lens taking photos of my former high school's boys basketball team and sharing the pics on the Facebook's alumni page. I have been getting positive comments of my photos and the students & community like them. I love it! I just wish I had another one like it for my 16-50mm zoom lens. This camera does the job and worth the money!

Comments about Sony Alpha SLT-A65 DSLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

Received my a65 yesterday. I love this camera. My previous camera was the Sony a580, which is also a very nice camera. The photos the a65 produces are exceptional with fine detail. I ordered the body only as I believe the 18-55 kit lense is not worthy of this camera (Sony should change that). There is some noise at higher ISOs, but I don't usually use ISOs above 800 anyway, so that's not a big concern to me. The video is superb! Being a prior Sony camera owner, getting around the menu is easy - just need to get used to where the additonal functions are. I hightly recomment this camera and feel it is worth more than the selling price. Sony is continuing to make it's mark on the photo industry. I believe Sony has the best video of any DSLR or mirrorless camera. Anyone interested in the future of photograph should purchase a Sony product. Great Job Sony!! AND BRAVO to B&H photo for the low prices, fast ordering, and delivery - Thank you.
