Comments about Sony DEV-3 Digital Recording Binoculars:

I got this binocular to record birds and for when I take my wife whale-watching. I had the perfect opportunity to test them today when a flock of red-maked parakeets (think The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill) converged on a tree in my back yard. I took my Canon 5DmkIII with a 70-300m f/4-5.6L IS and the DEV-3. I shouldn't have bothered with the latter.

The DEV-3 is basically 2 camcorder-class digicams with zoom telephoto lenses. You do not view through an optical path as with regular binoculars, but through a stereo EVF. The EVFs are nowhere near Sony's top-of-the range 2MP EVFs like the ones in NEX cameras or the RX1/RX1R accessory EVF. It is much coarser. If you come from using good quality binoculars (Leica and Nikon in my case), this is a major step backwards.

If the image quality of the video/stills were good, you could justify the poor view, but the image quality is just not good. I would say it's equivalent to a 2002 vintage compact digicam or a current smartphone camera, or a pre-HD camcorder. Colors are flat and dull, details are smeared, there is a lot of noise and motion blur, even when shooting in broad sunlit conditions. There doesn't seem to a be a way to prevent the useless digital zoom from kicking in, and when it does IQ goes from mediocre into abysmal.

To top it all, the user interface is both confusing and difficult to use. You have to manually switch between still, 2D video and 3D video modes, for instance, and there far too many buttons that you can't distinguish from feel alone, so you have to take your eyes off your target to fight with the DEV-3..

Frankly, even an entry-level DSLR or m43 camera with a decent tele zoom will give you much better results than this camera. I can't imagine anyone who cares about image quality would want to use it, and the main market is probably law enforcement and surveillance, where image quality is merely a nice-to-have. I doubt it performs any better from the toys made by Celestron, Bushnell or Barska.

Comments about Sony DEV-3 Digital Recording Binoculars:

I used this for bird-watching and though it did not have the optical reach that I would've liked for it's price, it was good enough that I was able to see with enough detail the birds/raptors that I was scouting. I also took it whale-watching and it did get a little wet, but comparable to a very light rain. it was still okay and didn't suffer anything. I wouldn't recommend getting it wet though.

Overall, if you've want to capture HD video through the binocular format, then this device is for you.
