The Optoma ML500 500 Lumens Portable Projector is a workhorse for the professional on the go with strong specs, solid core features and conveniences you'd expect to see in a projector meant for professional use. Although Optoma designed it to be a true portable projector suited to road warriors, the ML500 would be at home in board rooms or even in a high-end home theater setup.

500 ANSI lumens backed with a crisp 3000:1 contrast ratio is enough power to defeat even the most extreme challenges of ambient light and is nothing short of brilliant in a darkened environment. It's also got WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution that perfectly matches many of today's widescreen laptops. And its 3D capable so you can add immersive impact to presentations or screen 3D features with a Blu-ray player.

In addition, the ML500 also projects 720p, 1035i and 1080i high definition images and it's compatible with HDMI. That means that if you connect your source to the projector with a compatible HDMI cable, the projector will be able to display over a billion colors. What you get is the smoothest, most vivid and lifelike images available.

The ML500 is designed to be simple to use. The built-in Office viewer delivers PC-free projection of Microsoft Office documents, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint from onboard memory, SD cards, or USB flash drives. Auto keystone automatically optimizes the image shape for non-standard projection setups.

Finally, at less than 2.5 pounds (1.1kg), the projector is ultra-portable and is designed so that the AC cord does not need a power brick (reducing weight and enhancing portability).

This is the first LED projector I have owned. I've been using a cheap epson projector which is xga resolution and about 2500 lumens. I was amazed at the ml500 when I first turned it on. The first thing that struck me was the brightness. Although it's only 500 lumens it appears almost as bright as my epson. I believe this is due to the LED light source being able to display more vivid colours than bulb projectors. I would say that the perceived brightness is around 1000 lumens. It is enough to project a 100" image during day time with a little ambient light in the room. I am currently projecting onto a white wall. I have also tried it on a friends 1.2 gain screen and it is even brighter and clearer.
The clarity of the image is quite amazing. I have been using a 40" Sony Bravia 1080p LCD tv up until now and this new projector will now be replacing it for all my tv and movie use. The clarity, although only 720p, appears almost on par with my Sony. I will probably never by another tv again. LED projectors are definitely the future of home cinemas. I can leave this thing running all night and not worry about the bulb burning out!
I have heard of people having some concerns about the fan noise from the ml500. I almost didn't buy it for the same reason. It is honestly not that noticeable. I have a pretty good sound system set up in my theater room. I sit about 1 meter away from the projector and once I start playing something I can't hear it at all. That is also in standard mode and I haven't tried it in Eco yet. The menu does have a setting to control fan speed as well.
Another concern people have had is focus issues, such as with the Qumi projectors. I have not experienced any problems and I have been using the projector for 5-10 hours at a time for the last two weeks. The air vents pull air in from the front and sides and blow it out the back on the side opposite to the lense. I believe this design is what prevents the projector from having any focus issues. The projector also remains remarkably cool even after running for 10 hours.

I am really very happy with this proctor and would highly recommend it as a first projector or first LED proctor. It is just amazing value over all.

We purchased this unit to use as a projector for business spreadsheets and other materials. We loved the idea of an LED bulb that would last 10 years or so. After turning the projector on the picture was dimmer which we expected, with the lights off the projector did great. That said, it was really blurry due to scalling. The specs say that it is 1280x800 native resolution, but at any resolution we tried the picture looked very soft and was hard to look at. We returned the unit disappointed and got another traditional bulb unit from BH Photo that had a crisp picture. Too bad because this could have been a great unit.

Comments about Optoma Technology ML500 500 Lumens Portable Projector:

Overall, I am happy with this projector. It has a great picture and features. I like the fact that the led light source has a 20,000-hour life. With only 500 lumens, I was afraid the picture wasn't going to be bright enough, but it is as bright as my 1,500-lumen BenQ that I used to have. One thing that I had read and am not too happy about is that every few minutes it loses its picture and does a search for signal. You can still hear the sound, but no picture. The picture does return after a few seconds. Hopefully, there is a firmware update or fix for this. If it had not been for that, I would have given it five stars. It's a good projector for the price, though.

Comments about Optoma Technology ML500 500 Lumens Portable Projector:

Like most of you reading these reviews, I also did a LOT of homework before purchasing the ML500. It performs exactly as I hoped it did and I am very pleased - mostly because I had proper expectations!

I am a custom database developer and my projection needs are primarily for client meetings and training sessions in small to medium-sized conference rooms where the ambient light could be dimmed to a moderate or dark room. Due to the room size limitations, I did not need a projector with a powerful sound system.

What I DID need was a projector that was:
                • Portable - must be lightweight, small in size, easy to carry and travel-friendly. The ML500 shines here in every respect
                • Quiet - in a smaller conference room a louder fan would be (has been) distracting. The ML500's fan is quiet, mostly because it CAN be quiet since it doesn't have to cool a super-hot halogen bulb. The LED bulbs simply don't get nearly as hot as other bulbs do.
                • Accurate color - When viewing screen mockups or other layout designs, accurate color is a must. The ML500 does just fine here.
                • Mostly static data versus video - Static images are easy for virtually any projector. Video is where some projectors fall short. The ML500 did fine with video in my testing. But if my _primary_ use was video, I'd probably spring for a higher-lumen projector with a better sound system. Unfortunately that would require a heavier, bulkier, hotter projector, which is something that would defeat my primary purposes
                • Cool bulbs versus Hot bulbs - In small/medium conference rooms a hot projector makes the room uncomfortable and attendees sleepy. The ML500 is about as cool as they come.

After my purchase I tested the projector outside of my expected usage scenarios and was disappointed - exactly as I should have been. I was asking it to perform in ways it was not capable of nor designed to meet.

You should get a bigger, bulkier, hotter, higher-lumen projector if:
                1. Need to project in bright rooms
                2. Your primary use is for video
                3. You project in medium to large venues
                4. You need a solid sound system (or you can get that separately

                All the best,

                Jim

I was a little nervous after reading other reviews about the brightness being only 500 lumens, but it's more than sufficient for my basement where I've ceiling-mounted it. My only complaint is the fan noise is a little annoying.

Comments about Optoma Technology ML500 500 Lumens Portable Projector:

We bought this projector to use on small scale sales and technical presentations. The device has plenty of brightness and color capability to project a good image in a conference room holding 12 or so people.Presentations are now easy to make without hunting down projector equipped meeting rooms. We like the feature of being able to project images from a flash drive as opposed to running the presentation through a laptop. The only real problem with using it in this mode is that the transition to the next image is rather slow.We also experineced strange colored dots all over the screen on .pdf files which had been converted fron .ppt's. Power Point images themselves, however, project fine. The unit comes in a handy soft case and is very compact and light. My only wish here is that it would have been nice if the soft case had a shoulder strap instead of just a handle. The unit comes with all the necessary cables and connections for a PC, but if you want to use it with a MAC you will need to get a special MAC friendly cable. This has made presentations to small groups very easy and effective. It is much better than trying to crowd around a small laptop screen to view a presentation or demonstration.Kudos to Optoma for a neat device.

Comments about Optoma Technology ML500 500 Lumens Portable Projector:

I bought this to replace an aging TV, I have the ML500 ceiling mounted projecting to a 94in 1.5 gain screen. The devices that are conected to it are a computer, XBOX, and Digital receiver (TV). Those devices also run to a 5.1 surround sound, I do not use the internal speaker of the ML500.

My kids love playing XBOX on the giant screen.

                      Pros:

Space Saver, everything is ceiling mounted so it takes up zero floor space. I ran extension wires to a shelf on the back corner of the room for the devices I have playing to it.

                      Clear/Sharp image.

Plenty bright for the room, I do have blackout shades for the windows and I would recommend them, You can get them at most hardware stores. Picture is bright enough to see with ambient light from an adjoining room.

                      Cons:

No Zoom lens, if you mount the ML500, take your time and get the distance to screen right, you cant change the picture size once mounted.

                      Summary:

Research and plan out what you want before you buy. The ML500 works out great for me because I can control the light in my room. I like the fact that its an LED source and I won't have to replace the bulb in the forseeable future. I also took the time to plan out the room and where I was going to place all the components before I bought everything. In total I spent less on this setup then i would have on a new TV, and this screen is much bigger then any TV.

Comments about Optoma Technology ML500 500 Lumens Portable Projector:

We purchased this unit to use as a projector for business spreadsheets and other materials. We loved the idea of an LED bulb that would last 10 years or so. After turning the projector on the picture was dimmer which we expected, with the lights off the projector did great. That said, it was really blurry due to scalling. The specs say that it is 1280x800 native resolution, but at any resolution we tried the picture looked very soft and was hard to look at. We returned the unit disappointed and got another traditional bulb unit from BH Photo that had a crisp picture. Too bad because this could have been a great unit.

I had bought ML500 for movies and video games. For movies it was great! The HDMI picture was crystal clear. I had a difficult time focusing video games after I tried to go above a 100" screen. I like to have the option of going up to 300". This projector maxed out at about 110". 500 lumens was plenty brightness for a room that has moderate light. Inputs were plenty. Sound output was a problem. You are stuck with a 2 watt onboard mono speaker. Portability was tremendous. Who would have thought you could have a 2.5lb projector produce a 100" screen?!! It had no verstility as far as lens zooming. It's location dictates exactly the size image it will project. You can't make the screen smaller or larger. I thought the usb connection was great. A presentation on a flash drive is ingenous. Last of all it had a 20000 hour light source. WOW!

Instead of purchasing a large LCD, I opted for the portability and convenience of a projector. Like the other new LED projectors on the market, there are significant limitations to this unit, such as the lack of brightness and no optical zoom or lens-shift. Nonetheless, if you have a compatible viewing space (right throw distance, ambient lightning, etc.), and can accept the quirks of projectors, this unit makes a suitable replacement for a conventional display.

We are using this projector to presentations and showing videos. The projector does a very nice job and is bright enough not to be used in a completely darkened room. The fan can be somewhat loud on the non-eco setting but found that it's just fine when set to eco mode. The speaker is ok, but far from great. My biggest complaint is that there is no audio out. I didn't expect great sound, but for the money expected I could have an option to output it.

Comments about Optoma Technology ML500 500 Lumens Portable Projector:

2.40m distance from screen to lens gives an image about 170cm horizontal width, so [@] Calculator Pro is quite accurate.Brightness in eco-mode is virtually indistinguishable from normal mode. Image quality may however be a little disappointing if you are expecting the sharpness of top end 1080p HD PC monitors. This is despite having set the screen resolution to match ML500's native resolution. I also noticed the chromatic aberration mentioned in avsforum.com, which making text and lines look slightly fuzzy, which causes noticeable eyestrain in my case. YMMV.For games, the blurriness is not an issue. Colours look quite vivid and I dun notice any rainbow effects. I do notice instead some occasional reddish streaks when my POV is making sharp turns and such. Dunno what those are supposed to be though.FYI, I am using the ratio 16:10 that gives the largest screen area for a given projector distance, my eyes are around 1.85cm behind the screen, and I did remember to finetune the focusing when I shifted the projector distance. All lights are turned off usually, but I find that image is still perfectly viewable when I light up an 11W fluorescent bulb, but the blacks become grey. Colors are still quite vibrant and vivid though.

Comments about Optoma Technology ML500 500 Lumens Portable Projector:

I did not expect a mere 500 lumens to light up such a quality, pristine, sharp picture. coming from an older epson projecting 3000 lumens, I am wonderfully surprised. I had my doubts, but this little(and I mean little) machine does its duty. Its so small, I mount it on my camera's tripod when I use it. if you are looking for a projector that has a small footprint(size and energy both), this is it. You will not be disappointed. Your room can be somewhat bright and still get a viewable picture.

I just received one in the mail. I won't do a technical review, but to sum it all up this product is AWESOME. The minute you purchase an led projector you will understand why you will NEVER buy another big screen tv. It does project well during the day IMOH. I was coming from an older epson 3000 lumen projector and this little machine kills it. The colors are spot on and the image quality is pristine. you will be surprised how little this thing really is, I mount it on my camera tripod...

Product was fired up and during the setup phase went dead: The initial picture looked good but hopefully this is just a quality fluke: I have other Optomas and they have been very durable.

Wonderful image, very easy to handle, very portable
Whats not so great is the light power. It doesn't allow a good projection when the room is not dark.
I recommend it anyway if you have a black out to the window
