The silver Sony E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens is a prime portrait-length lens featuring a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture and a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 75mm. The lens has a lightweight and compact design with an aluminum alloy lens barrel and engraved focusing ring to provide greater handling as well as an aesthetic appearance. Greatly benefitting handheld usage with this lens is Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, which works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps to support use in low-light conditions.

A linear autofocus motor is incorporated into the lens design to provide smooth, quiet performance and a stepping motor is employed to deliver quiet aperture actuation that is well-suited to video applications. For refined control over focus, Direct Manual Focus (DMF) is supported, which enables manual fine-tuning of focus when in AF mode to enhance working with selective focus imagery. Also contributing to shallow depth of field applications is a seven-blade circular aperture that provides a smooth quality to out-of-focus backgrounds.

Prime portrait-length lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 75mm.
Large, bright f/1.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for use in low-light conditions and for shallow depth of field imagery.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps to benefit shooting handheld in dim lighting and with greater zoom magnifications.
Linear autofocus motor and stepping aperture actuation control provide smooth and silent performance that is especially beneficial to video applications.
Direct Manual Focus (DMF) permits fine-tuning of focus manually while working in autofocus modes.
Aluminum alloy lens barrel is both lightweight and elegant in appearance.

After a sour experience with the Sigma 30mm f/2.8 lens, I returned it and purchased this Sony 50mm f/1.8 lens. As expected the field of view is a bit tighter, being in the early telephoto range. With that said it is still very usable indoors as a slightly long, "normal" lens. You will have to sometimes back up slightly more than you would need with either the 18-55mm zoom or the 30mm offerings, but Sony's O.S.S (Image Stabilization) system works wonders. After using this lens for a few days I started to think how amazing it would be if Canon and Nikon offered IS in their primes such as the 50mm and 85mm offerings. It opens up some interesting possibilities.

Right from the get go I noticed this lens focuses faster than the 18-55mm zoom set to the long end. Obviously it doesn't focus fast like a phase detection DSLR, but it is definitely useable. You will notice some issues when focusing in lower light, but this is a common occurrence with any lens and AF in low light. This is very welcome as that was one of the only areas I missed my DSLR when using the 5N.

Finally I want to point out the fast aperture on this lens is excellent, providing you wonderful out of focus bits in your images (bokeh). Set to f/1.8 you get a very thin depth of field which can be used to isolate a subject or aspect of the image very well.

This is by far the best lens out there for this Sony system and don't be deterred by the focal length, it works just find as a everyday lens as long as you are willing to work with it.

Comments about E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens (Silver):

My first prime/portrait lens. Picture images and video images look sharp and professional like.
Played with it capturing images and was overall very impressed.
The lens is a little bit slow to focus but not a deal breaker for me.
The order came with a lens hood which is a plus.
      Hope you find this useful.
      Thanks.

Comments about E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens (Black):

This lens is very nice, I use it for video. I wanted several lenses with other options so I purchased this one for the purpose of having a small aperture. I use my zoom lens more often than this one, but this is pretty good too. I have no regrets and nothing bad to say about this lens. If you want it, you should buy it because I recommend it. It is exactly what the description says it is.
In this case, you get what you pay for; this lens is not the best but for what it is, I love it, my zoom lens is much better and way more expensive so that's why I use it, but this one is for closer shots where I can have a smaller aperture.
I use this lens to shoot videos even though it is not a full frame lens.

Comments about E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens (Black):

This lens is a real bargain. It's as good as any portrait lens I've ever used, including any of my old German Zeiss Ikon lenses. Excellent for low-light situations too. I can bump the FS in my a6000 and shoot with ambient light in all but the darkest settings. Focus does tend to hunt a little in very low light situations, but so does practically every other lens. That's what manual focus is for.

The kit lens on my VG30 was a bit grainy when shooting a band in a low-light club. This lens was a great solution. As a prime lens, it doesn't zoom, but it lets in so much more light that I can stand further away and zoom in FCPX (or use cam's digital zoom, which is the same a cropping in post). Beautiful bokeh when close-up. Image stabilization makes it a winner. Very, very pleased.

I needed a reliable indoor lense compatible with my SonyA6000 --- as always B&H staff are always professional and savvy in recommending an appropriate device. My son's indoor volleyball photos were clear, even though the lighting in the gym was minimal. A perfect complement to the A6000.

I started out with the SEL35F18, which is a fantastic lens. I recently started using this lens, and wow! It's just a little tighter, but the bokeh and clarity are superb. I still recommend having both lenses, but if I could do it again, I'd start with this one. I use a Sony NEX-6, by the way.

Comments about E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens (Silver):

This lens is as close to no-compromises as an inexpensive lens can be. Image quality, and sharpness are fantastic. I've had no trouble with chromatic aberrations or distortion, and vignetting is manageable. I love the metal construction. Sony designed high quality glass while managing to keep the overall package inexpensive and including OSS stabilization! In my mind there's no excuse to not own this lens if you've purchased a a5000, a51000, or a6000 camera.

Comments about E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens (Black):

This is the best bang for the buck Sony E-Mount lens in the lineup, bar none. It's priced well below where it should be, which is rare. It's small, well-built, lightweight, has silent auto focus, is razor sharp--even wide open, and has Image Stabilization. It's a nice hunk of glass that should cost at least 50% more than it does. It's also the perfect size for the Sony a6000, and a great focal length for portraits. It also focuses very close and renders beautifully with great bokeh. A friend, who is a Leica shooter, was impressed with the how the lens draws a scene even before he knew it was made by Sony and only cost [$]. Finally, it's a fast lens and perfect for low light. I consider it a must-have for the a6000, etc. cameras.

Comments about E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens (Black):

What more could you want from this price tag? Stabilization-check, Bokeh-check, low light-check, metal housing-check, decent focusing ring-check, included hood-check. Say what you want about e-mount lenses but who else can offer this feature set at this price? Certainly not Canon or Nikon. In all honesty this is the third time I've owned this lens, every time thinking I would find something better but the simple fact is the value of this lens is too good not to own one. Are there better lenses? Certainly, but there is no other lens in my bag that I can pull out and think to myself, how in the heck does this not cost more? This is by far the smartest lens to own for e-mount.
