The Nikon Coolpix AW100 Waterproof Digital Camera (Black) is an action-hungry camera that's rugged enough to take just about anything you want to throw at it – extreme cold (temperatures down to 14 °F), large bodies of water, and even accidental drops up to 5.0' (1.5 m). Featuring a 5x optical zoom lens (28-140mm 35mm equivalent), the AW100 employs a 16 MP CMOS sensor to capture beautiful images underwater, on the ski slopes, or wherever else you'd like to punish this rugged little model.
The AW100 is underwater-rated down to 33' (10 m), so you'll be able to take it sailing, snorkeling, or even scuba-diving. Meanwhile, you'll know exactly where you are and where you're headed, thanks to the AW100's built-in GPS and electronic compass functions. If that's not enough to get your bearings, simply access the built-in map on the easy-to-read 3" LCD screen.
These functions can help tell the story of the excursion that you cataloged via high-res photos and Full HD 1080p video. Even when you're not recording, the camera's GPS can log your location and record your route. This can also be displayed on the LCD of the AW100. Likewise, the electronic compass enables the recording of the camera's orientation.
The AW100 is designed to be easy to operate with one hand while the rest of your body might be otherwise occupied. HD video recording can be triggered by the press of a single button, and the camera's innovative Action Control feature allows you to set select camera functions without even pressing a button – execution is gestural. This will let you focus on the other task at hand, even if it's just keeping your gloves on.

We use this product on our manatee snorkeling tours 5 to 6 days a week, you can see our photos if you go to www.facebook.com/fun2dive We use the camera about 5 hours a day and I am a big Nikon fan and when I found out that the AW100 camera was coming out I had to have one. This is the first underwater camera after the Nikonos RS and the Nikonos 5 series, and I owned both series, so I was hoping this would work out well. Before the Nikon AW100, we used the Olympus TG-610 and TG-810 which did an OK job and I also tried the Go-Pro, and was really disappointed with the underwater results. But the new Nikon AW-100 Nikon has a faster shuttler speed, fast response time, easy to use buttons, good battery life and a quality print. We do not use the videos portion, so I can not comment on that part. Nor do we use the GPS feature or compass... but this is part of the camera which is OK if I was traveling, but still I do not think I would use it. I ran some prints through our Epson 10500 up to 16 x 20 and did very well for a little camera. Over all it is a nice camera, priced well, and love the locking door.

This is a point & shoot camera. Plain & simple. Don't look for too much manual control (except for exposure compensation) because it doesn't have much. I bought this because I wanted a rugged camera that I can take photos/videos on shallow waters and my hikes out in the backcountry.
Image quality is okay and is no where near DSLR quality in my opinion. I recently took some photos in high contrast situations where I would shoot indoors and there would be a bright light source in the background (ie window light, bright lamp) and the housing in front of the lens would create horrible flare and hazing. Outdoors, in even lighting it would take good pictures though. The greatest feature about the AW100 is the ability to attach filters. I don't know of any other P&S that can do this. I have a 40.5-49mm step up ring & I can use my graduated ND & polarizing filter. Under ideal lighting conditions I think this camera can take great photos. However, high contrast scenes can be a challenge. I haven't dabbled to much in the pre-programmed scene modes but I'll update when I get a chance. If you zoom in and position your subject the right way, you can get decent bokeh in the background (not great but okay). I do plan on using this camera as my main point & shoot and probably use it in tandem with my iPhone 4 for casual travel/family photos. Too bad there's no selection for color saturation. It may be buried under the pre-set settings but the default colors can use a bit of a boost. It also seems that there is a slight over exposure on my photos but I haven't pinned it down if it's a particular setting on the camera.
I also wanted this camera for the 1080p video function. Unfortunately, it doesn't have too much control over the video. I wished Nikon could have a least added a AE/AF lock on video mode. I don't like the stair stepping exposure adjustments. Autofocus on video seems kind of slow too especially when zooming in & out of your subjects. You can also hear the buttons being pushed when zooming so be prepared to hear clicking on your videos if you zoom. The zoom is one set speed so you can't zoom in/out slowly. I do like the 60 fps for slow motion. I even slowed the video footage down and extra 50% in Final Cut Express and got some great slo-mo.
Navigation is pretty easy and there's really not much options that would get you lost in the menus. Response and lag times are decent and is on par with other point & shoot cameras.
Even though it's a point & shoot camera, I believe it's capable of great photos IF you take you time and really concentrate on composition and get the right setting before hand. If you like to shoot auto everything you should be able to get decent images out of it.
If you need a rugged camera to take outdoors, I think this is probably on the top three that is currently out in the market. If you want the best image quality in a P&S camera but are not too concerned about ruggedness, then your better of buying a Canon P&S. In my opinion, the AW100 is a little bit overpriced but I still would recommend it if you need a rugged camera.

Comments about Coolpix AW100 Waterproof Digital Camera (Orange):
I bought the AW100 to take on mountain climbing adventures when I didn't want to haul my big camera and gear around. I really like the filter attachment so I can add a polarizing filter or ND. I also like the idea that I will be able to take it outdoors in the cold without the battery draining as has been my experience with other point and shoots. I also like that I can take it in the kayak without concern about it getting wet and it doesn't need underwater housing. The sensor is versatile in a good range of lighting situations and the shutter is surprisingly nibble. Even though I have other Nikons, it did take me a little while to get use to how to shift between the different menus, otherwise, I am impressed.

A good camera in the air, good pictures, good zoom, good size to have allready in the pocket, but bad in the water, it was no longer watertight after 6 dives and 9 months of use, never went under 5 meters, so it was drowned.

I bought this camera for my wife as she wanted a point and shoot instead of lugging around our DSLR. So far it seems to perform pretty well. The screen is huge, buttons are easy to use and the shots look great. The only issue I've noticed is when you have a shot that contains action and isn't very well lit (picture kids playing/dancing in the living room at night) it can be a bit laggy recharging the flash and the automatic shutter speed tends to be a bit slow so the images come out blurry. Other than that we used it to get some great shots of our daughters first softball game of the season.

I was looking for a simple point and shoot that was weatherproof. This camera is all that and more. I was surprised how easy the GPS was to setup and how simple it is to move from feature to feature.
The panaramic scene is very accurate. The indoor and outdoor pictures are very good quality too.
The battery life exceeds my expectations. I was apprehensive at first about the little lense, but really now kind of shocked that I see all these other point and shoot cameras with one of those telescoping lenese that are not as good quality. The size of this thing is perfect and the neck mount strap makes it more convienient to carry around my neck in any conditions. I'm anxious to try this on the boat and in the water. the housing seems strong enough to support an active lifestyle.

I bought this to take on kayak camping trips (after the weather warms). I have used it hiking and fooling around and find the buttons easy to use for my rather large fingers (button sensitivity has three settings; I left mine on the default most sensitive). The quality of some photos has been startling for an underwater camera--which are notoriously poor, in my experience. The camera responds quickly to all inputs but does take a little while to write to the card. The slow lens is the only negative: in the overcast weather we had when I first received it, 1/4 of photos were throw-aways. I kept the camera anyway since I anticipate most of my pics will be in sunny weather. Excellent macro camera too, btw. I also found the chunky body easy to grip.
