Comments about Velbon Ultra Stick R50 5-Section Aluminum Monopod:

I own a lot of tripods and mono pods...from the very best Gitzo Carbon Fiber to lower cost models...
Velbon hit a home run with this R50.... While no mono / tri pod fits every shooting scenario, this monopod is hard to beat for a low cost, highly versatile monopod at a mass market price point....

          what I like...

Its rock solid... will support an easy 10-15 lbs load
          Its ultra light, under 1lb
          It collapses down to <15"
it has quick twist full open, opposite twist, full close, brilliant design and overcomes the cumbersome "tighten each joint" premise most other mono-pods / tripods employ.
its made from anodized alum...sure, carbon fiber has a higher strength to weight ratio, but at this weight, any additional weight savings are negligible, hence the usefulness of low cost aluminum. The finish is durable enough and looks attractive.
It has a nice padded grip for easy hold, and insulation from the cold or heat as the sun can bake metal.
Price... really, how can you beat this price... where a good gitzo can cost 3-4x this amount and is cumbersome to use.

It's hard to find a fault with this product....my only future suggestion would be, use one more leg component to allow it to collapse to a slightly smaller length, maybe 11"...but I am sure the Velbon had explored this option, and like all manufacturing decisions, was ruled out due to added complexity or reliability issues. Also keep in mind, Velbon makes several models of these pods, and if you are not very tall, its possible you can use one of their shorter pods, allowing it too collapse to smaller length and more suitable for use. Experiment with a tripod or tape measure to determine the ideal height, as these pods have one height, they are NOT adjustable... a small price to pay for the convenience the twist open/close offers.

A mono pod IMO is a very underutilized tool for both binocs and photography. Assuming u are viewing non-mnacro subjects, the shakes (unwanted camera / binoc movements) can occur on all 3 Axis, XYZ when hand-holding. Y = to and fro the subject, X = left / right, Z = up / down. A tripod eliminates all 3, but is larger, cumbersome vs. monopod, hard to set up / break down, or carry when constantly on the move...but tripods are perfectly suited for stationary use.

A mono pod eliminates the Z movement completely. The Y movement is a non issue, unless shooting macro subjects. So all that remains is the X axis, or left / right movement...so the user only needs to control one movement with a monopod. Just having a fixed leg on the ground eliminates most of the X axis movement, the remaining movement must be controlled by the user. Unless u are using very long fl lenses, or shooting in very dim light (long shutter speeds), the monopod is usually as effective as a tripod. However, under the previously mentioned situations, a monopod is not the right tool. Considering most photographers do not use long lenses and shoot in reasonably lit spaces, (or use flashes) often monopods are will produce results on par with tripods. Another exception to this might be if you are trying to maximize the final image size vs. the capture size for large prints.

While this monopod has not yet stood the test of time, so far, I would highly recommend this product for those with digicams, small video cams, binocs or DSLR's with total weights under 12 lb range.

Quality product. Sets up very fast. Use it with Canon SX50 and helps in low light and full zoom mode. Very happy with it.

Comments about Velbon Ultra Stick R50 5-Section Aluminum Monopod:

I've enjoy this monopod. It is lite weight, short, and easy to carry with me. Also, has been strong enough to hold camera with modestly large zoom lens. Twisting motion to release and lock sections takes a bit of getting used to, but once you have done so it works well and quickly.
