The 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Standard Zoom Lens from Sony is a bright zoom lens, specifically designed for Sony Alpha-series of DSLR cameras. When used with cropped APS-C sized DSLR cameras, the 35 equivalent focal length for this lens becomes that of a 24-75mm zoom. It is constructed of 16 elements in 13 groups, as well as Aspheric and Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements, which all help to deliver sharp, clear photos throughout the zoom range. It has a minimum focusing distance of 1.0' and a front-end filter diameter of 72mm.

Its aperture is constant throughout the zoom range, and will remain f/2.8 as your chosen focal length increases. It also has 7x circular aperture blades that work to produce smooth, out of focus background effects.

35mm Equivalent: 24-75mm
This 16-50mm lens has a 3.1x zoom factor, and is the 35mm equivalent of a 24-75mm lens on the cropped APS-C cameras it was designed for.
Aperture Range: f/2.8-22
With f/2.8 throughout the zoom range, up to a maximum of f/22, the high quality of this lens means you don't have to sacrifice aperture for higher focal lengths as some lenses do when zooming in.
For DT Alpha & Minolta DSLRs
Sony Digital Technology (DT) Alpha lenses are ideal for use on cropped, APS-C size DSLR cameras, and are not recommended for use with full frame DSLR camera bodies.
Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) Elements
To reduce chromatic aberrations, most noticeable when zoomed all the way in to the 74mm equivalent focal length, the extra-low dispersion glass corrects for certain wavelengths of light - producing sharper images with truer colors.
Aspheric Glass Lens Elements
These precision lens elements correct distortion for sharper, more visually accurate images across the entire zoom range of the lens.
SSM Super Sonic Wave Motor
Designed for fast, smooth, silent automatic focusing, this unique technology achieves high torque at low speed with rapid start/stop response. It operates through the ability of a piezoelectric device to reshape itself quickly when voltage is applied.
7x Circular Aperture Blades
Circular aperture blades produce smooth, rounded bokeh background effects when capturing spot-light sources in your pictures. Because the aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.
Filter Thread: 72mm
The front filter thread does not rotate, allowing rotating polarizing filters to be used.

I purchased the Sony a77 with this lens kit in FEB of 2013. It's now June and I've shot a considerable amount of stills and video. So far I'm very pleased with the image quality of both the lens and the processing power of the camera. I did send it back initially because I was concerned about a minor give in the lens mount on the camera. Just a little bit of a give when twisting the zoom back and forth where the lens actually shifts slightly. I received a replacement kit that did the exact same thing, so I figured this is just a minor flaw in design. I purchased the 3 year drops and spills SquareTrade warranty so I'm not too worried about it. So far it has had zero effect on image quality and functionality. That's really my only complaint so far. On the plus side, this lens has extremely great image quality, with bright consistant and fast exposure throughout the zoom range. The 16mm wide open end is a very attractive and addictive way to shoot. I've got a B+W ultraviolet/haze protector on it, mostly to protect the front end glass from scratches and dings. Next up is a polarizer. I've found it very hard to get a good exposure with bright skies without either blowing out the skies or underexposing the rest of the image. The polarizer should fix that. That's it for me so far. I def recommend this as a fairly all purpose lens. Just keep it mind the zoom range is limited so don't expect to get too far in on our subject matter. Looking at the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 to fill this void.

While the optics of this lens are superb, the zoom control ring is not. It is TOUGH to move. I returned the lens to B&H for a replacement as the zoom ring needed some muscle to zoom. B&H sent me a replacement lens which unfortunately has the same problem. I guess Sony has not realized this as yet. It does not effect still photography, but during Video while zooming in or out(especially out)the camera shake simulates an earthquake. The lens mount even rocks to and fro because of the force being used. If this mount was made of plastic like the cheaper lens's, it probably would have ripped off the camera body. Totally unacceptable. I guess this is why very few professionals consider using Sony because they lack the quality control one finds in Canon and Nikon. So I'm keeping this lens as I don't have another choice.

I have used this lens in low light situations in air craft museums. The images are razor sharp with fantastic color. This lens sees every detail. I have used it on my A65 and A77 in other situations and the results are the same sharp detail and color.

Comments about Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Standard Zoom Lens:

Using this lens with the FS100. When I purchased the FS100, I used a Metabones adapter with my existing EOS 5D lenses, but I wanted a flexible lens with the autofocus feature. I first gor the Sony NEX Mount Adaptor since I knew some new Sony lens were coming out. After many months of searching, I opted for this lens as the best choice and for the price, it turns out that this was a totally great choice. I did not have the opportunity to use it a lot yet but the shot made with it so far were really nice.

This lens shows off the reason I bought a DSLR. The sharpness and brighness of the images are amazing. The bokeh is superb, and I find myself manually setting the aperture to f2.8, and I have not seen any drop in sharpness. This is a sturdy lens with a good amount of heft, so i'm not so worried about light knocks when using my sling strap. This lens stays on my camera 90% of the time.

great lens with pretty acurate autofocus for video.
I would say the focal length range is pretty good on an crop sensor. I also have a 28-70 and i do occasionlly find myself wanting more in the frame.
I believe this only works with aps-c cameras so you couldn't use the full frame on a full frame camera.

I bought this mainly for video use and because of its completely quiet (it is quiet) autofocus which is pretty fast and accurate.

Comments about Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Standard Zoom Lens:

This is a fantastic lens that fits perfectly with the sony a77 camera body. In terms of build quality, it is heavy, sturdy, fairly impressive given the large diameter. It feels rugged enough not to worry about it getting dirt or water on it. Picture quality is amazing, and when stepped down a few stops from 2.8 it is as sharp as I have ever seen. It also performs really well at 2.8. I actually find that it feels like a G series lens, perhaps it didn't get the G label because it was provided as a kit? In my opinion, it is worth spending a few extra hundred bucks to get this lens as opposed to the 18-135 mm or the 18-250 mm...although you don't get the range, you get amazing picture quality.

Comments about Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Standard Zoom Lens:

This lens is just great. I still can't believe my eyes. I bought an alpha57 with the standard 18-55 lens, and decided (after reading several reviews) I should upgrade to the 16-50 f2.8 one from the a77.

Ok, yes, it's big and heavy, and 72mm, but my GOD the sharpness & definition...! Just zoom in and you will find every detail is there.

Low light situations? you're covered enough with this camera's good light handling capabilities and the 16-50 f2.8 Sony lens. It has really won the "always on award" for me...

Fast focus, great video quality, excelent picture quality, manageable sun flare if used with the included accessory... it's definetely your upgrade from the standard kit zoom lens.

Comments about Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Standard Zoom Lens:

Jusst started using Sony's 16-50mm f/2.8 DT zoom lens and found it to be extremely, extremely tack sharp. Due to the f/2.8 constant aperature the image stays very bright in the already excellent Oled electronic viewfinder of Sony's a77 SLT camera. Had ordered the 18-55mm f/3.5 lens and saw right away it didn't fit my needs. Once I put the 16-50mm lens on and started shooting with it and particularly made some large prints, I'm convinced it's more than the perfect kit lens for this camera.
Before ordering the lens I did some online research for this product. Until you start shooting and making prints from this lens the reviews understate the high quality of this lens. I found the images to be not only very sharp (my no. one priority) but image resolution and shadow detail was top notch.
In terms of value received, this lens is a real bargain. The rest of the photographic world will very soon realize that Sony is now among the top three players out there in this industry. Their aps-c and full frame equipment must be regarded very seriously.

Comments about Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Standard Zoom Lens:

I was looking for a great wide angle addition and I found it! Try the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 and I was very disappointed. I took the chance to pay more $ for this Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 and it pays off. It's a bit too big to handle easily, but nothing that you couldn't manage.

Comments about Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Standard Zoom Lens:

I use this as my primary zoom lens. At 24-70 equivilant I get nice wedding shots, as well as awesome low light band photos. It is curious that Sony chose not to advertise the SSM motor, as it is near silent, fast and accurate. Regardless, if you are a Sony user you'll want this lens.

I needed a lens that could do wide-angle as well as telephoto in a low light setting. It works well when shooting indoor real-estate. It's not a real performer if you need to shoot close-up from a long way off, but it is absolutly perfect for most of my needs.

Comments about Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Standard Zoom Lens:

The 16-50mm f/2.8 zoom by Sony is the most versatile lens that I've ever owned, and if I was only allowed one lens this would be it.

This lens is most often on my camera (the standard for me)and I use it for landscapes, group shots and even some portraits. The contrast, color and sharpness help provide for some excellent photos and I'm never without it.

At f/2.8 low light conditions are no problem what-so-ever. I almost never need a flash when shooting indoor public gatherings, and night scenes are a breeze for this amazing hunk of glass. The lens is solid and well constructed.

I bought this lens together with the A57. It's a great combination. The sweet spot is at f4.0 at any focal length. Excellent colours and bokeh. Very fast AF but quite. It is the G DT lens from Sony.

I have owned my SonyA700 for four years and have used the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 with that camera for most of that time. I was really hesitant to purchase this Sony lens because it was almost the same as I already had. There is NO comparison! The lens is sharp, sharp....and the colors are super! I have no regrets.

Comments about Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Standard Zoom Lens:

Got this lens for my sony a77. I must say i have been overwhelmed by the build quality and the image quality on offer. f2.8 throughout the zoom range makes it a fast lens. This lens is very sharp throughout its range and gives the best results between f4 and f8. SSM motor is silent and makes autofocussing very fast. Image quality can be compared to the more expensive zeiss 16-80mm lens. The a77 corrects the chromatic aberration and vignetting but it may be significant in some other models. It is only for the APSC cameras and not compatible with full frame cameras. Dont forget that it has a large filter size of 72mm. Another good part about this lens is the internal focusing system, so you can use your polarising filter without any worry. The lens is slightly on the heavier size but has excellent build and is weather sealed(a bonus for outdoor photography). All in all an excellent piece of glass.

Comments about Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 DT Standard Zoom Lens:

I needed a wide angle zoom for my Sony FS-100 and this one is perfect. It's fast, and relatively light. And mounts onto my Alpha LA-EA1 adapter.
