The A5+ 5" Active 2-Way Speakers (Pair, Black) from Audioengine provide high-quality audio in a compact and stylish design, ideal for use with a variety of audio sources and devices. The system consists of an active left speaker and a passive right speaker, which are connected together via full-size gold-plated 5-way binding posts. Each speaker has a hand-built cabinet made from 0.75" thick MDF wood. Each cabinet contains a custom 5" Kevlar woofer and a 0.8" silk tweeter to provide clear, detailed audio with a wide frequency response and excellent realism.
The cabinets have rear-facing bass ports to extend low frequency response and tweeter waveguides to provide a wide dispersion pattern and realistic stereo imaging. The left speaker has internal Class-AB amplifiers that provide a combined system power of 150W to deliver a strong performance with low distortion. The rear panel offers 3.5mm and RCA inputs, allowing you to connect computers, MP3 players, smartphones, and any other product with 3.5mm or RCA outputs. The speakers are also compatible with Audioengine wireless audio adapters, and Apple's Airport Express and AirPlay.
The active speaker also has a stereo RCA output so you can connect an additional device, such as a subwoofer. A USB power/charging output allows you to charge small devices such as MP3 players or mobile phones while you listen to music. A convenient front-panel volume control lets you make quick adjustments. Protection circuitry includes output current limiting, thermal over-temperature, power on/off transient protection, and a replaceable external main fuse for lasting reliability. The speakers are also magnetically shielded for safe use near video monitors and other electronics.
The bottom of each speaker has a high-density isolation pad to reduce vibrations and reflections when used on a table or desk. There are also 1/4"-20 inserts so you can mount the speakers on stands. The system has a selectable operating voltage for international use. A convenient remote control is included for controlling the speakers. You are also provided with connection cables and carrying bags for quick and easy setup.

Comments about Audioengine A5+ 5" Active 2-Way Speakers (Pair, Black):
Like many who buy these speakers I read lots of reviews first, both in journals and on websites and from customers who bought them. Yeah, they are expensive but if one considers them high-quality bookshelf speakers rather than high-quality computer speakers they are a bargain. Yes, I am using them as computer speakers but only because I already have large, dedicated sound-system floor speakers.
While the A5+ speakers are inspired by studio monitors they are more versatile. First of all, like monitors they will not improve a bad recording. I noticed right away how poorly engineered and recorded some of my favorite 60's rock songs were. And like monitors I can hear things on the recordings such as coughs, dropped objects, and percussion instruments I'd never heard before. But unlike near-field monitors they have a wider stage presence. I have my speakers about ten feet apart and could certainly separate them more without losing that presence.
The sound quality is incredible - clean and crystal clear. Some buyers might consider a sub but I am perfectly happy with the bass they produce. I'd rather hear the music the way it was intended to be heard. No messing with equalizers or tone dials.
Build quality is incredible. Some folks might not think the design is modern enough, but for me, the understated, matte finish and simple design is exactly what I wanted. The main speaker is heavy, but when you consider what Audioengine put in it, I am amazed it's not heavier. As for the cooling fins, I have not yet noticed them getting even slightly warm.
So am I happy with this purchase? Absolutely. Love the speakers and love the service B&H provides.

Comments about Audioengine A5+ 5" Active 2-Way Speakers (Pair, Black):
Looking for PC speakers after my Klipsch 5.1 finally died I bought some M-Audio AV40 and was underwhelmed with them. I moved them to my media center pc and bought the Audioengine A5+ for my primary computer. The Audioengine A5+ have impressive sound, solid and full bass (if one is not looking for too much bass) and bright sharp highs. The A5+ don't meet in the midrange perfectly but the other reviews tell me to give them time to break in. Physically they are the least impressive looking speaker I have had on my desk. The important part, I have no complaints with their sound and am very satisfied with my purchase.

Comments about Audioengine A5+ 5" Active 2-Way Speakers (Pair, Black):
The A5+ are actually my 3rd purchase of Audioengine speakers. I previously owned 2 pairs of the A2's. The A5+ is the update to the A5. It features a few extras missing on the A5 including a remote control with an energy saving mode, and heat fins on the rear. I also added the S8 subwoofer for a 2.1 system connected to my TV. The cost was under $600 for the setup. Before commenting on the sound, I need to provide you with some background. I have been a high end audio junkie since the late 60's owning numerous speakers including Merlin, Magnepan, Apogee, Role Audio, Totem, Accoustat, TDL, etc... so you can say that I am not the typical consumer wowed by the name of Bose etc... Anyway, on to the sound. I first set up the speakers without the subwoofer hooking up the RCA leads to the A5+ main speaker and the mini plug to the Television output. The input for the television was a Fios cable box and Panasonic Blu Ray player both using HDMI. My first impression of the sound was extremely favorable. The bass from the speakers sounded as if I already had a sub attached and voices and instruments seemed to emanate from a very clean clear background. I then attached the S8 and after some careful adjustments I could barely notice the effects. That is until a sub 50Hz sound was produced by the source. Then it revealed itself with some nice tuneful polite bass. No boom at all. It just stepped to the plate whenever needed, never calling attention to itself unless absolutely necessary. In summary, for the price, these speakers are a steal. If I were a starving college student unable to afford the "good" stuff. Buy these speakers! Even if you have the money to buy something more expensive. Save your money and try these. They are that good.

They were perfect for what I wanted. I have them hooked up to a PC that is connected to my TV. Extra inputs meant that i could wire the speakers directly up to the TV too. Great sound, great size. Would definitely recommend.

Comments about Audioengine A5+ 5" Active 2-Way Speakers (Pair, Black):
I'm pretty impressed with these speakers. They are very clean, get plenty loud when you need them to, but even at lower levels, they reproduce audio faithfully. They're a big step up from what I've used previously, and I feel that, with the A5+, I'm getting accurate enough audio to do voice-overs and audio mixing. Per the instructions, don't draw conclusions about their final sound until they've been in service for 30-50 hours. They sound great out of the box, but improve noticeably after they've broken in.

If you close your eyes you can hear where the different instruments are. Very detailed sound. Bass is great. Not too much, not too little. If you are a bass junkie, get a subwoofer. I just wish it had dust covers and that the USB could input sound.
