I purchased this product to extend the time between battery changes on a recent cruise to Alaska from Seattle and back. It worked very well and I shot over 1500 exposures. The only criticism I would offer is on the small connector from the battery holder to the GPS outlet to enable you to use the shutter release button in Portrait position (vertical). I could not keep it plugged in at the same time I had my external mic plugged in for videos. It wasn't a real problem since I take most of my videos in horizontal position, just a minor inconvenience when shifting from videos to stills.

Product works as advertised. Ultimately I didn't keep it due to needing to remove the battery door from the camera when I wanted to use it. The battery door on the D5xxx is not designed to be taken off and on repeatedly and I had visions of my future self snapping some part of it off and then having another problem on my hands. My solution, albeit somewhat of a pain was to get an extra battery and have it charged up and ready to go. So far I have not had to swap out batteries - even on the longest of shooting assignments which is a testament to the battery life in general of the D5xxx.

Comments about Vello BG-N6 Battery Grip for Nikon D5100 & D5200 Camera:
My son had just bought the exact same camera I had just purchased and he showed up with the camera and let me use it (before I got mine). I noticed the battery grip attachment and it looked like a really great addition so I bought this one. It adds a lot to the stability of holding the camera steady and the ability to use two batteries instead of one means I almost never run out of a battery charge. It has worked flawlessly. It's a solid must-have accessory in my opinion.

I use the product everyday, why ? Because you never know what you will see that you would like to take a photo or video of! The fact that it holds 2 batteries is a great things for individuals who go on long trips. Especially if your a tourist ! This product comes in handy. I had to shoot a baby shower and I had to constantly turn off and on my camera because I was do afraid of it dying, that's would of been embarrassing! Sometimes I like to go to the city to take photos and every where I go I see people will the same product !

New digital cameras can be very tough on a camera's battery.
What a great solution this is; two batteries and it makes the camera easier to hold on to. There is no appreciable increase in weight. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I would like to see the gripping surfaces be a tad more rubber-like, since my hands can get so dry in the cold winter air...which is also tough on batteries.

Good battery grip, particularly if you're a videographer and have stuff attached to the bottom of the camera-- it lets you add/remove batteries without taking apart your rig. The build feels a little flimsy, but if that's the tradeoff for keeping the weight down, I'm totally fine with it.

Comments about Vello BG-N6 Battery Grip for Nikon D5100 & D5200 Camera:
I am a hobby user but require the additional battery life that the grips allow. When I recently upgraded to the new D5200 the grip for my D80 was not interchangable. I purchased this item as I couldn't find one to fit the 5200 in the brand I had previously purchased. This one is lighter weight...which in itself seems good. I like the battery door catch...easier than having to screw shut the previous one I owned. However, I worry about the longevity of the door catch as well as the catches that keep the batteries in. The ones that keep the batteries in seem a little chinzy/wobbly. My biggest dissapointment comes from the shutter release. My previous one required no additional cables, etc...simply worked after attaching to the camera. This one has a little cable that you plug into a little port on the side of the grip (that has a little rubber stopper that doesn't fit and flops open all the time...snagging on things) then plugs into the side of the camera. It also says it works in Portrait mode. Does that mean it doesn't work in any other mode?? Not sure as I haven't tried it yet. Not even sure that I will. Don't want to have to stop and dig out a little cable, attach it, then go back to taking pictures. Don't want to leave it attached as it is one more thing to snag and catch on things.
Overall...it will work for most of what I wanted to do. I will probably replace it when and if one comes out in the brand I purchased before. For the price...I expected much more.

So far so good, it works and takes 2 batteries instead of one which is good for video.
I only gave it 3 because there is not nob for changing anything when it is used to shoot vertically.

Comments about Vello BG-N6 Battery Grip for Nikon D5100 & D5200 Camera:
The only thing preventing a 5 star is that sometimes my camera with lose power when I have it mounted on the tripod in the portrait position because the grip will separate from the camera just barely enough to cause a disconnection. This is not a big issue and it only happens under that circumstance, however it would be nice if it never occurred.

Comments about Vello BG-N6 Battery Grip for Nikon D5100 & D5200 Camera:
I have the Nikon D5100 and have waited patiently for Nikon to release a battery pack for it but never has. Then I stumbled across this. I was skeptical that it would work as my camera won't even allow off-brand batteries to be used in it. But it was completely worth it! I can't express how much I love it! Now my shooting time has doubled and that means a lot to me when shooting a wedding and spend less time worrying about missing a shot while changing batteries.
I also LOVE the fact that I have an alternative shutter button (though it would be nice to be able to use it without an additional cord). It even allows me to still use my wrist strap, strapbuddy and tripod mount!
The only downside is not I have to buy a bigger camera bag so it will fit!

I use this to add weight to my 5100 and it does the job nicely. It gives the lightweight camera more heft as well as battery life. It was a little hard to install, but once I got it on. It fired right away.

I hardly used it but the plug that fits the camera breaks very easily. Too flimsy.
At least it did not break my camera.
