I purchased this product to extend the time between battery changes on a recent cruise to Alaska from Seattle and back. It worked very well and I shot over 1500 exposures. The only criticism I would offer is on the small connector from the battery holder to the GPS outlet to enable you to use the shutter release button in Portrait position (vertical). I could not keep it plugged in at the same time I had my external mic plugged in for videos. It wasn't a real problem since I take most of my videos in horizontal position, just a minor inconvenience when shifting from videos to stills.

That there is a grip for the D5100 is great since Nikon doesn't think photographers need or want a vertical grip. For me, it's a must as it improves handling of the camera so much. I accept that there has to be an external cable to trigger the shutter since Nikon didn't design the D5100 to have a grip. Given that it feels good and improves the handling of the camera, I have a several quibbles:

    1. The cable to trigger the shutter is not designed well (actually, I'd say little thought went into it). It creates quite a bit of leverage on the side of the camera when plugged in, so it must be unplugged each time you put the camera away as there can be damage done to the plug. A wider-based plug that doesn't stick out so far would be much better - the flatness would keep it from becoming a lever and add stability to the plug.

    2. It's designed to take 2 batteries, but whenever I put 2 batteries in it the camera says that an incorrect battery is installed (altough both batteries are original Nikon batteries). The only way to get rid of the error is to pop them both out with the camera turned on and pop them back in again - but the error can come up again almost immediately. The only solution that seems to work is to only have one battery inserted at a time, which reduces the benefit of having 2 battery bays.

    3. The hooks that hold the batteries in don't do their job - the battery door must be closed to keep the battery in the case.

    4. Because of #3 above, the battery door comes flying open frequently (especially when mounted on a tripod).

These issues provide quite some frustration, but not enough to do without the grip. So I bang my head, curse the Vello designers, and keep on using it. I would buy it again, but it makes the price feel a bit high for the issues that you have to take with it.

Very nicely built and feels great but I found that I can easily get to the shutter release without the grip, I don't really need an extra battery and I don't like the cable connection to the to the camera for shutter activation.

Comments about Vello BG-N6 Battery Grip for Nikon D5100 & D5200 Camera:

I'm giving this 4 stars because the product seems to be well built and the feel was good. It does feel a little light because of the plastic construction but it felt solid. It does not, however, work with a D5300.

I bought this product because I use my Nikon D5200 as a video camera for High School productions. The single battery wouldn't last a complete dance recital, so I thought this would solve that problem. Which it does. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars at this time because it feels very flimsy. But what more do you want for the money? Only used it a couple of times so far, so I can't comment too much in regards to it's ability to survive more than standard use.

Comments about Vello BG-N6 Battery Grip for Nikon D5100 & D5200 Camera:

Before buying this product, I looked at several cheaper alternatives on [@]. In the end, i decided to go with this one assuming it would be of better quality than the $30 ones on [@]. Overall, I'm satisfied with this product. There are a few important things to note, however, that may not work for everyone. The main drag with this battery grip is the cable that must run from the grip to the camera in order for the vertical shutter button to work. It's not too large, but it gets in the way of the LCD on the D5100 so you must remove the cable to flip the screen around. Also, the vertical shutter button doesn't always work for me. I think there's a disconnect of some kind in the cord. Because when I wiggle it around it usually starts working again. One other thing, there are no additional buttons other than the shutter button. That's the only one. Those three quirks aside, the grip feels sturdy in the hand. And the main plus for me is doubling the battery life. I used two Nikon brand batteries, so I didn't experience any of the compatibility problems some people are talking about. The bottom line for me, I think you may be better off going with a cheaper model unless price isn't a big deal. It will work, but if you're picky like me, it probably won't satisfy your expectations for what you pay.

I bought this grip for my D5200 after I had bought it for my d5100 one year ago. Works great and gives the camera a better appearance.

Comments about Vello BG-N6 Battery Grip for Nikon D5100 & D5200 Camera:

I Bought the hand grip to use 2 battries while on my trip. the batterys last all day i dont have to fret with switching out batteries. the things i like most about the grip is that 1. it holds 2 batteries at once. 2. it matches the camera body. 3. has a nice rubber finger grip. and 4. i like the fact it has a button so i can take side pictures without having to hold my hand in a wierd position. there is 2 complaints i have 1. the wheel you spin to screw it to the bottom is very large. 2. for this model for the Nikon D5100 it has to have a cable that runs from the grip to the camera to use the side button option. (however this is not the fault of the manufacture of this grip it has to do with Nikon not putting in a connection in the camera for it to be controlled by the grip therefor the cable is required.) Over all i recomend this product its nice sleek and seems durable i will be useing it for many years to come.

I like the size and feel of this grip on my Nikon 5200. Works great, uses 2 batteries. ... I only wish it didn't need the little cable to use the handle mounted shutter release button.

I knew the cable was necessary for portrait shooting. That's not a big deal. What is a big deal is the big wheel! The locking wheel is absurdly large. When holding your camera in portrait mode with this attached, the giant wheel digs into your hand. Ergonomics just awful. I'm sending it back and I've already got another grip with a very compact locking wheel. Not B&H's fault, but they would do well to find an alternative grip to offer for the D5200/5100.

This grip does not actually fit on the d5200. It fits on the d5100 great, but becasue the base curves up too soon (see product photo) the grip will not fit without grinding this part wider. Once grinded, it functions fine, but stinks that the item is listed as compatible with a camera it is not. The base of the d5200 and d5100 are not the same.

Comments about Vello BG-N6 Battery Grip for Nikon D5100 & D5200 Camera:

My son had just bought the exact same camera I had just purchased and he showed up with the camera and let me use it (before I got mine). I noticed the battery grip attachment and it looked like a really great addition so I bought this one. It adds a lot to the stability of holding the camera steady and the ability to use two batteries instead of one means I almost never run out of a battery charge. It has worked flawlessly. It's a solid must-have accessory in my opinion.
