The 6x External Slim Portable Blu-ray Disc Writer with Cyberlink from Sony is equipped with dual built-in USB 2.0 cables. Its external Blu-ray burner allows you to store up to 100GB of data on one disc and burns Blu-ray discs at 6x speed. This means that data-intensive content such as high resolution videos and large photo collections can be processed and saved quickly and easily by you, whether at home or on the go. At the same time, the BDX-S600U guarantees you the highest possible image quality, including 3D. The Y cable with dual USB ports provides you with adequate power. After use, the USB cables slide into the integrated cable duct for easy stowage, eliminating the cable chaos that you often get when you travel.
The Blu-ray disc writer is ideal for flexible media users who like to use several devices at the same time, such as a PC, notebook and netbook. Frequent travelers will appreciate this compact and elegant all-in-one burner which weighs less than 3/4 of a pound, offering access to the user's film, photo and music collection as well as the ability to store treasured personal memories immediately and for long-term access. The drive also supports the new 3 and 4 layer BDXL media with a capacity of up to 120 GB. With the BDXL media, you can save more than double the data quantity on a Blu-ray disc than with a 1 or 2 layer medium which holds 25 or 50GB. This makes it very easy for you to store extensive film collections on just a few discs. BDX-S600U also provides spectacular HD and 3D images with impressive sound quality. Another optimal feature for easy use is that the burner can be powered directly from a notebook or netbook using the integrated Y cable with dual USB ports.
The BDX-S600U writes to DVDs at up to 8 x speeds, to 1 and 2 layer BD-R media at up to 6x speed and to BD-R XL discs at up to 4x speed. The drive reads DVD media at 8 x speeds, Blu-ray discs at 6x speed and CD-ROMs at 24x speed.
The BDX-S600U comes with the CyberLink Media Suite 8 which means there is no limit to your creativity as the comprehensive software package contains numerous programmes for reproducing and individually processing videos and films as well as for fast and easy data archiving. The CyberLink Media Suite is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP.

I was hesistant in buying this because oddly enough NO REVIEWS anywhere online comment on wether it works with a mac. And seeing as the box of the product and all online info doesn't indicate either... i wasn't sure how this blu-ray burner would work out. IT WORKS PERFECT ON A MAC. The software it comes with does not. But the mac reads it as an external disc burner and COMPERSSOR or ADOBE ENCORE or DVD STUDIO PRO (even though that program doesn't currently burn blu-ray) reads the burner fine.
I have burned 5 discs so far and so good!

I bought this unit to replace a defective BD-DL burner from another manufacturer and to allow for expansion to BD-XL burning in the future. In addition, it was compatible with Toast 11 Titanium which I had purchased for the previous burner.
There are several good news/bad news things about this unit: 1) It doesn't need an external power supply but it doesn't ALLOW one, either, taking all its power from the TWO REQUIRED USB cables; 2) When I plug it in to my MacBook Pro it's immediately recognized and brings up Toast but it also brings up a dialogue box for an added keyboard. 3) It's not COMPLETELY compatible with Toast: burning a 25GB disk seems to go perfectly but burning a 50GB disk doesn't also catalogue the disk and even though Toast reconizes it as a BD-XL burner it doesn't allow me to select an XL disk as output.
I can only give this unit three stars because I couldn't try it out on a Windows computer with the included Windows software.

I am a wedding videography who spent lots of time looking at reviews on Blu-ray burner/player. The one thing I worried most was the ability to install the device to my computer. Very easy to do and very easy to use. I burned a Blu-ray disc just minutes after setting it up on my computer. The images were great. Im excited to have this product for my buisness.

I needed a Blu-ray writer to burn the shows I produce in Proshow Producer. The Blu-ray makes a lot of difference in the finished product. The Sony Slim is so compact it will fit in your laptop bag and it runs off of the usb ports on the laptop.
I would recommend it.

I read another review that said this writer works fine with a MacBook. Since I am brand loyal to Sony and the price was fair I bought it and it indeed works fine with my MacBook. The software does not work as it is for PC but the MacBook recognizes the device. I create Blu-ray via Final Cut and Compressor and author with Encore (Apple for some reason does not support Bluray for authoring) so all is well. I have only burned a few discs so far but there were no errors and everything went great.

I needed to develop a BluRay writing solution for an older (Pentium 4) computer running Windows XP Pro. This Sony external disc writer provided an excellent solution. There are a couple of small problems which can be solved at the time of ordering. I would recommend that you purchase 2 USB A male to A female extension cables. I found the cables a little short to connect to the USB ports on my computer.
With an older computer, block out a large block of time for rendering and writing of BluRay discs. If your project is relatively long (over 15 minutes), you might want to either go out to lunch or catch a nap.

I just upgraded my video equipment to film in HD, and this was a pivotal piece of equipment in getting this done. I film sports mostly, and am very impressed with this writer. I edit on Sony software so I found that it works better to use Sony products throughout the entire process, and so far (knock on wood) I have not been proven wrong!

It works like it should. I very much like the software that came with it. That software replaced my expensive software. You must have a way to plug two USB cables into your computer using cords less than a foot long. Mine has to sit on the floor to work. You can not just plug them into a powered USB extension. It will not work.
