One thing I didn't realize about strip boxes until trying this one; since they offer soft light on the long dimension and harder light on the short, they can be used to reveal texture in one dimension only. That's useful. Perhaps even more so than their excellence for rim-lighting. Makes me wish there were more size options, but this one is proving fairly versatile.

The box is well-designed, much more compact than rigid-panel versions. Easy to assemble, but since the umbrella rod isn't full-length, you need to insert it in the collar every time you assemble it. A bit of a pain, but still much better than rigid boxes.

Durability is an open question, and the only reason I didn't go with 5 stars. Haven't used it long enough to know if it'll last. I hope so, because I love this bloody thing.

I really like the concept. It provides good quality of light. I like the versatility, especially with the grid. Very convenient on location.

Build quality is very poor. Westcott really needs to step it up. Stitching is terrible. Diffuser is poorly made (doesn't fit perfectly). The frame is flimsy and bends very easily.

        Comments about Westcott Apollo Strip 16 x 30" (40.6 x 76.2 cm):

Great product for the studio. Wescott's Apollo line can function on location as well, but make sure they are double sandbagged. My one complaint is the silver lining material starts to flake off the more you open and close them, resulting in being covered in glitter, which can make your clients think you just left the strip club, not closed your strip box.

          Easy Light Control

          Comments about Westcott Apollo Strip 16 x 30" (40.6 x 76.2 cm):

I bought 2 of these strip boxes to use instead of umbrellas to better control the direction of light and prevent spillover onto the background. The umbrella style made it quick and easy to setup. The light quality was excellent. I bought the Apollo stripbox because of its recessed diffusion panel which minimizes light spread compared to other boxes with flush front panels. Used with an SB-910 speedlight there was plenty of light coverage for a full length body shot. Note that since the speedlights are inside the stripbox the infrared triggering system on most camera may not always function. I used radio triggers to fire one light and set the other flash up for optical triggering (SU-4 mode) which worked great.

You can not beat this Box for the price (or for a bit more)...

I have been using this for the odd couple of Photography (Portraits and Food Photography)...

The little box provides a nice soft light with a less loss of light than I expected. Though I have read reviews about its poor construction, I have found no problem with it at all...

It folds down into a manageable package, is light and quick to reassemble.
            No Complaints at all here...

This strip box is easy to set up and manipulate with my speed lights. I have used it in conjunction with other light modifiers and as a stand alone with great results. I will be adding another one to use in multiple lighting set ups.
For its pricing it is a great tool. It seems a bit delicate for someone who may be hard on this kind of equipment but I would expect that I will get plenty of good use out of it.

This is my first softbox. Very easy to install. I love the way it folds up. I also love the soft light. Tilting it, since the stand goes inside the softbox, doesn't allow for a lot of tilt. Also, a bit tricky trying to get it installed on the umbrella mount.

Using this as a back light for interviews mostly and really like the way it wraps around. The narrow shape means I can hang it behind someones head on a boom stand and it remains out of shot.It is only rated for 300watts - wish it it could handle a bit more. The spines feel stronger on this strip than on the Apollo Orb which is reassuring.Would have been nice if the Apollo range came with a storage bag like Chimera and Photoflex does.Like all softboxex, it really benefits from adding a grid.

I've been using the 28" Apollo for a couple of years now, and I wanted something a little tighter and edgier.

The construction seems to be a little sturdier than the 28" Apollo, which is great! Also, the diffuser can be completely removed! Excellent for a harder rim light.

I do wish it were a little taller, though. Maybe another foot or so would make it a lot more useful for full body illumination, etc.

I have just purchased these 2 soft boxes to use. The light distribution and quality is superb. I am using them with my 580ex Canon flashes. I've shot 3 portrait sessions with them and am very glad that I have them.
I found that have to use a short horizontal extention on your light stand in order to tilt the strip box. There is not enough adjustment room in the box unless you do. The Octa works fine on a boom stand. I use the Pocket Wizard system to control the lights. So once set up you just shoot.

                      Comments about Westcott Apollo Strip 16 x 30" (40.6 x 76.2 cm):

Would have given it five starts if it came with a case or resealable bag to protect the front diffuser. On the Apollo square softbox, the diffuser is attached and folds up onto the closed unit for protection. The diffuser on the strip softbox is not attached.

Sturdy. Very Portable. Easy To Set Up.
