The 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter from Tiffen offers a unique way of maintaining total control over your depth of field as well as presenting an efficient way to create some special effects. The filter is designed with a built-in rotating ring that controls neutral density ranging from 2 - 8 stops (0.6- 2.4). The heavier the density, the slower your shutter speed will be. This longer exposure allows the shutter to remain open long enough to record the same amount of light but will also create movement within the shot. Another major benefit of this filter is the elimination of having to buy and carry around individual neutral density filters. With this one filter, you can rotate to the degree of ND you want - a real time and money saver.

Simply mount the filter on your lens, set it to "Min" density then frame and focus. Care must be taken with focusing at heavier densities to make sure focus is accurate. However, if it isn't, switch to manual focus and rotate to the desired degree of filtration.

For example, if your standard exposure without the filter is 1/500 @ f/8 and you then set the filter to "Min", you change the shutter speed to 1/125 at the same aperture - thereby losing 2-stops of speed while gaining a hint of "blur" in the image. If that's not enough filtration, continue rotating the filter until you reach the shutter speed you desire. Using the above example, you can even get down to 1/8 second @ f/8 (8 stops). It should be noted that the calibration marks on the filter ring are to be used only for reference and should not be regarded as accurate settings for specific densities.

A Neutral Density filter is used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Since it allows the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would normally not be possible to capture without the filter. And, since it can also help to control your depth of field, it permits you to shoot at wider apertures. Ultimately, its value is in helping to prevent bright, overly washed out images shot in bright light.

The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration.

Thin Profile Ring (9mm) - The wider front filter ring helps reduce the possibility of vignetting (the darkening of corners) at wide angle and is not deep enough to accommodate a lens cap
It allows you to have continuous control over the amount of light coming through your lens in an approximate range of 2 (ND 0.6) to 8 (ND 2.4) stops

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
ColorCore Technology
The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations. I got this filter so that I could control shutter speeds while photographing waterfalls. With this filter I can adjust the relative scene brightness by simply turning the outer ring. It effectively replaces a collection of various neutral density filters.

It requires a little getting used to, beyond the included instructions. The min and max density settings are relative to an index mark, a rather small white dot, which did not align with the top of the lens. But you can rotate the fixed ring such that the index mark is visible and then hand hold it in place while rotating the outer ring to adjust the density. It takes a little practice, but it's easily doable.

Aditionally, it can also function as a polarizing filter. The variable feature is obtained by using two polarizing filters. Both rings can be adjusted togather such that glare is reduced, and then adjust for variable density. Polarizing readjustment may be necessary as you go from min to max density.

Using this filter and arpeture adjustments, I was able to achieve a shutter speed range of from 6 to 1/60 second(s) while photographing waterfalls in full daylight. The results are fantastic.

The filter density was not consistent as it was adjusted. I returned it and would not recommend it.

Comments about Tiffen 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

A well built filter, it's a bit greasy but it works good. The filter has 77mm filter threads on the front so you can mount a hood, lens cap or more ND filtration. It's kind of built like a step up ring with two 77mm polarizers. The image quality from this filter is good. It does add a very pronounced warm cast, personally, I don't mind that since I'm using it for video.

Comments about Tiffen 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I tried to save money and I bought a Polaroid for one of my other lenses, breaking the tradition of buying Tiffen filters. It was a mistake. It is a great filter, if you learn the proper way to us eit.

I've only had the filter for a few weeks. I've used it in outdoor, sunny settings a couple of times. The filter works well at reducing the exposure. The filter has a min and max setting as well as evenly spaced markings between the min and max. I'm disappointed that the intermediate markings do not indicate a certain number of stops. Basically you have to assume that the min is 2 stops, the max is 8 stops, and everything else falls somewhere in between. When trying to compose pictures this means more of a guess and check process is needed.

I use this with my Sony lens whenever shooting outdoors. When I bought the FS-100 with no ND filter built in, this became my go to filter whjen using any of my lenses that fit a 67mm. Lot's of range, but no diffinitive settings as all of it is variable.

Comments about Tiffen 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I did quite a bit of research before purchasing this filter, and I am so glad I did. I shoot a lot of DSLR video and want to be able to have more creative control over shutter speed/aperture/ISO. This filter provided the perfect solution. Color seems to remain accurate throughout, and I dont notice any vignetting. The only thing I wish I would have done is buy the 77mm version with the adapter down to 67mm to make itm compatible with more of my lenses.

Got this filter to use with the Canon 70-300mm F4L lens because I do a lot of outdoor video. It's a good combination in bright sunlight.

The on-line ordering process was very easy, the delivery was ahead of what was promised, and the product is an exceptional bargin for the quality. The filter mounts all of my 67mm lens without any problems and the clarity of the glass through the full range of ND possibilities is very good. I would buy this product again and plan to get the 77mm version for my other lenses.
