The 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter from Tiffen offers a unique way of maintaining total control over your depth of field as well as presenting an efficient way to create some special effects. The filter is designed with a built-in rotating ring that controls neutral density ranging from 2 - 8 stops (0.6- 2.4). The heavier the density, the slower your shutter speed will be. This longer exposure allows the shutter to remain open long enough to record the same amount of light but will also create movement within the shot. Another major benefit of this filter is the elimination of having to buy and carry around individual neutral density filters. With this one filter, you can rotate to the degree of ND you want - a real time and money saver.

Simply mount the filter on your lens, set it to "Min" density then frame and focus. Care must be taken with focusing at heavier densities to make sure focus is accurate. However, if it isn't, switch to manual focus and rotate to the desired degree of filtration.

For example, if your standard exposure without the filter is 1/500 @ f/8 and you then set the filter to "Min", you change the shutter speed to 1/125 at the same aperture - thereby losing 2-stops of speed while gaining a hint of "blur" in the image. If that's not enough filtration, continue rotating the filter until you reach the shutter speed you desire. Using the above example, you can even get down to 1/8 second @ f/8 (8 stops). It should be noted that the calibration marks on the filter ring are to be used only for reference and should not be regarded as accurate settings for specific densities.

A Neutral Density filter is used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Since it allows the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would normally not be possible to capture without the filter. And, since it can also help to control your depth of field, it permits you to shoot at wider apertures. Ultimately, its value is in helping to prevent bright, overly washed out images shot in bright light.

The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration.

Thin Profile Ring (9mm) - The wider front filter ring helps reduce the possibility of vignetting (the darkening of corners) at wide angle and is not deep enough to accommodate a lens cap
It allows you to have continuous control over the amount of light coming through your lens in an approximate range of 2 (ND 0.6) to 8 (ND 2.4) stops

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
ColorCore Technology

In the "first-glance" review I wrote upon receipt of the filter, I gave the unit four stars because of the "dark X" effect that others have noted. I've seen it, too, but not all of the time. It's very strange, and I haven't figured out what specific conditions can cause it. But it's worth noting that there are conditions where it will appear, and others where it won't.

So, average the "star values" of the two comments and you'll come up with 4.5 stars. About right.

By now, I've had the opportunity to put the filter to use in the field. All previous positive comments still hold completely true. It's rugged, turns smoothly (but with adequate resistance), and does what it's supposed to in terms of cutting light and extending shutter speeds and/or allowing wider apertures in bright light.

SLT and ILC users might find this easier to use than those using standard OVF DSLRs, but the results will be the same. I've never before been able to use a 20-second exposure in dappled sunlight near midday before, regardless of how low the ISO setting was pushed.

After a pretty thorough wringing out, I can still say that vignetting has not been an issue under any conditions at 16mm with my short zoom, and that's a huge change over anything I've used before. It's hard to say if that will remain true with wider-angle lenses, but it will be a while before I have an opportunity to find out.

Comments about Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I use this product to make time exposures (long exposures) especially at the beach and lakes. The product is easy to use and is better than a neutral density filter that can't vary the f/stop degree. Just set it on the amount of F/stop you want to reduce and shoot. It couldn't be simpler.

The rotating bezel is a bit small to grasp firmly to rotate, optics are great - no real distortion. Mounted easily and securely.

Comments about Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I ordered this product to use with my 7D which I primarily shoot video with. After reading numerous positive online reviews I decided to get one. This is my first variable ND filter, and so far, so good. The glass and build seems solid and, of good quality. Fits very well on my 72mm thread Sigma 18-35 1.8, and enables me to shoot great quality images/video in the very harsh Australian Sun. Comes with a well made convient case and shipped from B&H in a very short time. The only thing I can say against it is that the filter spin seems a little too smooth for my liking. Otherwise the image quality from it is superb, and I guess at the end of the day that's all that really matters. Overall solid product, I'll be sticking to Tiffen after this purchase.

Comments about Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I only had 2 occasions to try the filter, but here is my "review", starting with the good:
                      * Colors are very nice
                      * Light blocking is varring nicely
                      * Scale on the filter is easy to use (at least on my Nikon lens)
                      * Enabled shooting very long exposures on a sunny day (F22 with 5 seconds)

                      The bad:
                      * Being a thin filter, it was a bit hard to screw on to the lens
                      * On maximum density, you get a BMW like format on your image - 2 quarters dark, 2 bright. It goes away as darkening density decreases

I will definitely try more settings (larger aperture, for example)

Some ND Filters require pre-focusing before installing the filters. with this one you'll mess it up. I bought this filter by it's name "Tiffen" since it is known by its reputation. However, I feel disapointed of how to allign the thread and mount the filter on the lens.

Comments about Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I just received the filter, so have not had an opportunity to try it as I intend to, but I don't really have any doubts that it will do what's expected (with one caveat).

My first and largest concern was vignetting at 16mm (24mm FF equivalent) on my 16-50mm f/2.8 zoom. Even a Cokin Xwide holder and square filter produced strong black corners at that focal length.

The specs noted that the outer ring of this filter is oversized, and they didn't lie. It's a big, wide filter and produces no vignette even with the lens wide open at 16mm.

The build quality is robust and the inclusion of a nicely padded case is a definite plus, though it does take up a fair amount of room in an accessory pocket.

The reason for the 4-star rating is that the complaints about the "dark X" at maximum setting are quite correct. So far, I have not found a way to avoid it. It should not be a major issue, though, as it doesn't turn up until about 8.5 on the 9-point scale.

No, the indexes don't necessarily line up in an optimal position for viewing. Get over it. Not all lenses are threaded alike.

I use the product anytime I want to increase exposure time. This is typically when shooting a scene containing water or clouds. I like the smoothness seen in the final print.

Comments about Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I nearly purchased a less expensive variable ND, but I was unnerved by some of the negative reviews. Having owned Tiffen filters in the past, I felt comfortable with this brand. The construction of the Tiffen variable ND is excellent, and the quality superb. An exceptional filter that delivers as promised.

Comments about Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

After reading a stack of reviews and watching all kinds of videos online, I was convinced the only way I was going to get a halfway decent variable ND would be to spend a small fortune on the Heliopan, or Sighn Ray filters.

I hadn't heard much about this particular model from Tiffen, and to be honest, was a little wary about the brand after using some cheaper Tiffen constant ND filters that produced a fairly nasty green color-cast, and reduction in contrast.

Not the case with this filter, at all -- any color cast is very slight, and so far, I haven't noticed any reduction in the sharpness of my images with the filter on.

I shoot a lot of video and time-lapse, so I dragg the shutter on nearly every project I'm working on, so I needed a decent filter to put on my new 50mm.

So far, it's been great. I'd feel totally comfortable recommending this to anybody.

I had never bought something as useful as this. No matter how sunny is outside, when carrying this you can work with the lowest f/stop without worrying about any type of overexposures. I love working with 2.8 f/stop when filming and when photographing, this ND allows me to do it and get a really nice depth of field in the process.

I purchased this Tiffen 72mm Variable ND because it was cheaper than some of the others and because it got good reviews. I'm using it with a Sony NEX-FS100 kit lens among other lenses so I purchased the widest thread that I needed and planned to use step up rings for anything smaller. I purchased a Tiffen 67mm to 72mm step up ring for use with my fs100 kit lens and I was very surprised when I attached them both and the white mark on the variable ND that shows me which stop I am on was facing down instead of up. So just be aware of this issue. There aren't hard stops on this ND so without being able to see the marker you either need to create your own or just guess.
