I have owned a Sony PCM-D50 for the last 6 years and used it very heavily for documentary making both audio, video, and field recording. I loved the design, size, functionality, weight and the audio quality is simply the best of all the 'pocket' recorders with exception to its brother the PCM-D1. Recently I had to expand and the D50 no-longer cut it for me. I did extensive research on all alternative hardware which was small and wouldn't require any additional gear to use in the field, and the quality of the mics of the Tascam DR-100mk2 and this were acceptable alternatives but ultimately the R-26 has the flexibility needed for almost every recording need, six channels, very convenient touch screen which is completely operable whilst in use without marking the recordings, over sized dials make for very easy monitoring control. Being able to record with two shotgun mics, a set of binaural mics and the internal XY mics all at once makes for a really thrilling experience with a superb range of sound and dimensionality, and being able to do all of this wing the unit alone is really really stunning. Imagine using two Lav's and two Lapel Mics with the XY and having the ability to switch them on and off whilst recording & the potential is off the charts. Its not entirely the easiest unit to use especially after the Sony, but that is as much to do with the vast wealth of options open to you. Its bigger than many other recorders out there, its not as light as the Sony and it does require two hands to operate a few of the components. As for the other complaints of the unit having lesser grade pre-amps that may be, but if the Sony is the best then this is really fantastic sounding second option for such a flexible unit. If you use the Energizer Lithium AA cells you will get long life, light weight and enough to power your external mics. There is no useless functions on this everything is designed for professional My particular unit has had one or two hiccups regarding occasional silence whilst monitoring and later I find it dient record either. So this one is going back. I got the Roland ever-ready case which is good, but its tough to take it off whilst the strap is attached when you need to replace the batteries, and the fact that you have to remove the dead-cat before you can put the unit in the case is a pain. It could have been designed a little better, but it is better then the Porta-Brace version surprisingly. -One other thing to note, the case it nice but the smell from it and the chemical off-gassing is INSANE I get dreadful headaches from the stink. It might be a good idea to hang it up outside a for a few days after you get it.

Not a bad unit, but the pre amps are not as clean as I was expecting them to be. It is extremely sensitive to handling noise, and it doesn't help that the unit is all plastic. Even the chrome on top is plastic. If you are not looking for a durable unit, and you don't mind a little hiss, this unit is for you. Your better off with the new Tascam DR40. (The quality I was looking for, I found in the Sound Devices 702, so I returned the R26 and bought the SD702 instead)

Comments about Roland R-26 6-Channel Digital Field Audio Recorder:

This is by all means a great recorder. Sound is clean, works relentlessly, the AUTO SANS feature is really great too. The only downside is that it has not Auto Level Feature. I use it at weddings, so the levels are constantly changing between a quiet bridesmaid and a loud band, So I either have to change the input gain constantly or choose over noise/peaking. Other than that I would rate this at 5 stars

As a student film maker I'm always trying to get my hands on industry standard equipment that will help with my shoots and some of my crews shoots. Sturdy and reliable, it's been through two shoots already with many more to come. Its a work horse and gets the job done right. I also love the button layout and the fact that it is touch screen enabled. Would totally recommend.

It is a wonderful little device. It provides excellent sound and tremendous flexibility; the built-in mics are very good and compatible to some of my best condenser mics. The touch screen is also a plus. It's not cheap; however, if you are looking for a mic to sync up with your dslr (e.g. Canon 5D), you will be pleased with the end product. Since we all have different sensibilities and expectations, please do your own investigative work and find out whether or not this would be the ideal recorder for you.

Very easy to use with good audio quality. Multiple recording imputs/options make it a versatile recorder. It has a nice natural tone using the internal mics for a live music performance, but really shines when using external mics with the XLR inputs for recording interviews. It is a great addition to a DSLR video set up to replace the terrible in camera sound.

However, the manufacturer is difficult, if not impossible to reach.
I tried to register the equipment on the Web and by telephone to no avail. I finally gave up.I guess if there are any problems with it I have to throw it away and buy a new one.

I am a musician. I like to record my own shows and post them on the Live Music Archive on archive.org. I've used it with both the onboard mics and with additional mics. I've found that it's really easy and intuitive to use. I didn't read through the manual and I was able to operate it and use it right away. It also came with free software to mix/master the recordings. My only complaint would be that the output in the headphones doesn't get that loud. It could be that I'm recording with plenty of head room to boost the recordings in post. I was able to account for this also by boosting up the monitor levels in the playback on the device.

Comments about Roland R-26 6-Channel Digital Field Audio Recorder:

Comments about Roland R-26 6-Channel Digital Field Audio Recorder:

A full-featured field recorder from a reliable manufacturer, the R-26 produces fantastic quality audio from internal, external, or line sources. The built-in mics produce well balanced sound in open and closed environments, and the display can be read even in bright sunlight (one of the main reasons I had to invest in a new audio recorder). The front-mounted controls need no instruction manual to figure out, and the twin XLRs on the base of the unit are well placed for use with a video camera. There is a 1/4" thread on the reverse to help with mounting to a stand, tripod, or camera. One gripe, the battery cover clip is flimsy - I attached two strips of gaffer tape as a hinge to ensure the cover does not get lost.

We use our R26 to record our band for posting AV to the Internet. The manual is exceptionally well written with easy to follow directions. For those folks like us who are not as technically experienced in recording it has been a pleasure to work with instead of a daunting venture. To our ears, the sound quality is crystal clear and the interface with computer editing programs for synching to video appears to be seamless. So far we have had no issues, and it has performed in every way that we have asked it to.

The product delivers exactly as advertised and has strength in being able to mix from multiple sources or lay down the tracks independently for mixing in post. Others have commented that the product is very large. SLightly larger than your average TASCAM yes but nothing to be concerned about. In fact I feel the size is quite comfortable. The controls easy and intuitive to use and the touchscreen extremely responsive and accurate. This is a solid, quality product.

Comments about Roland R-26 6-Channel Digital Field Audio Recorder:

As a cultural ethnographer, I've had several types of field recorders, most recently the Marantz PMD 660. Over the years I've had problems with the Marantz transferring the digital file onto my computer. Most recently it did not record an interview, despite all indications that it was recording. So I decided to purchase the Roland R 26 based on colleague's recommendations.

So far it has done the job. Since I use an external analog microphone, I've found that the setup procedure is more complicated than I would like, and for some reason the sound volume is low, which means you need to place the microphone directly in front of the person you're recording. However the built in microphone is very good, which is nice in group situations. Transferring the digital file to the computer is extremely simple and has worked seamlessly. I plan on using this hopefully for the rest of my career. It's nice being able to record in different modes, ie mp3, wav, etc. The display is easily understood as is the manual.

                                          Small and Powerful
                                          By Borntoedit - Dec 8, 2011 - B&H Photo-Video-Audio
The recording quality is great, as long as you keep your hands off the unit. If you don't, it will record your hand changing position.

Comments about Roland R-26 6-Channel Digital Field Audio Recorder:

The recorder is a bit on the large side, but still very nice to work with. Input levels are easily adjusted on the go, using separate knobs and without needing to go into submenus. The touch screen controls are also rather good. The quality of the built in microphone is very good and noise levels are also low.
I am using it mainly together with the Röde NTG-2 microphone (to record sound for DSLR footage) and it powers the mic really well in phantom mode. The battery still lasts for hours. Raher expensive, but worth the money imho.
