Comments about M-Audio Pro Tools MP + Fast Track C400 - Software and Interface Recording Bundle:

I bought this as a start-up interface to begin music and voice-over recording and production at the hobby level. It is probably a bit more powerful than needed for a hobbyist, but I don't intend to upgrade gear, and I love music. So I am happy to learn the additional nuances.

I am VERY Please with the ease of use, physically of the C400 interface itself. Cord management, volume controls and multi-button are great! Very aesthetically pleasing as well.

I have enjoyed all that I have used of it so far, and I am barely using this combo to it's potential. I have this C400 with Pro Tools MP9, two Condenser Mics, stands, cords, and my acoustic guitar. Looking forward to pairing this with a decent MIDI Controller to really get some work out of it!

Good to know: You MUST have a monitor speaker/headphones to hear real-time playback while editing a session. It will not play through your computer. As I said, I am a hobbyist, and live in NYC, don't have room for monitor speakers, but wanted something other than headphones. Simple solution, I connected a decent 2.1 w/sub set of computer speakers into the headphone out.

Comments about M-Audio Pro Tools MP + Fast Track C400 - Software and Interface Recording Bundle:

The interface and the Pro Tools software are great. I would give it 5 stars except that to get the advertised 4-in and 6-out you have use the SPDIF connectors as well, which have no interface controls! I had to purchase an analog to SPDIF coverter to get the the other 2 channels of input to allow the 4 channels I needed for recording live events. I have to use the software to monitor these and the interface has no way to set input levels! Besides this misrepresenataion of the interfaces capabilities (it is only a pass-through device for 2 of its 4 inputs and 2 of 6 outputs)- the rest works fine.

Comments about M-Audio Pro Tools MP + Fast Track C400 - Software and Interface Recording Bundle:

I've been using my new Fast Track c400 for a couple of weeks now, and I love it! It works flawlessly, with no latency, and the ProTools MP9 software does, too. In fact, it has plenty of "bells and whistles" to fill out my own work, or practice along and write with. I'm still learning the ins and outs of the program, but this version is by NO means "minimalist!" If you can't do what you need to do in 24 tracks, you're not doing it right!

My only issue is the plastic top, which had a small scratch on it when I opened the package. But that's no big deal to me, as the interface works great!

Comments about M-Audio Pro Tools MP + Fast Track C400 - Software and Interface Recording Bundle:

So far I am very happy with the Fast Track C400 and Pro Tools MP9 bundle.

The hardware is performing perfectly and clearly with no noticeable audio latency while recording. This is especially worth noting since I was concerned to find that this interface lacks the option to switch/mix between pre- and post-processed audio while recording. So far it hasn't been an issue, I just had to adjust from the old habit. Everything that I have recorded with this unit sounds great so far.

The software works like a dream right out of the box (after a single downloaded update) and has given me no issues, a first for me in my varied Pro Tools experiences. The compatibility with old sessions and virtual instruments, and the updated plug-in selection is all just what I needed as an experimental composer and recording artist updating my home studio demo-ing setup.

As an aside, it is stable and fast enough that I intend to use it for live performances.

There is little reason to compare it to my previous hardware, as I was using the original MBox for many years, and while it had shortcomings (mainly in the exterior design) they were few, and were addressed long ago with the many MBox 2 products. But still, I am very happy with this bundle, especially for the price, and recommend it.

        Experiencing the transition to USB

Comments about M-Audio Pro Tools MP + Fast Track C400 - Software and Interface Recording Bundle:

Thus far, both ProTools and the Fast Track C400 have been great.

          ProTools:

I have used Cubase 3 SX, Ableton 6,7,8, Reason 3 and 4, Renoise from infancy, FTII (yep, DOS :)), Nuendo, Logic 5.5, and many other DAWS. Reason 6 is the only other option I'd consider now, and ProTools M-Powered has become what I need for music wherever I go.

          Pros:
          - Sreamlined interface and great documenation make it easy to get familiar with using ProTools.
          - Several great instruments and effects processors right off the bat to get you started without other purchases.
          - Easy installation an setup.
          - Incredibly inexpensive option to start with a lot of expandability.
          - It's a professional DAW with a solid history and use in the industry.

          Cons:
          - No native VST support.
          - Can take a while to load, especially on first use.
          - It can take a lot of extra money to build into what you ultimately want in comparison to other full-featured DAWs.

          Fast Track C400:

I've been using a Presonus Firebox, which is amazing outside finding the right firewire chipset from TI to work with. I finally hunted down a decent laptop for a portable studio, but it's nigh on impossible to find a reasonably-priced laptop with FireWire and space for two hard drives now (HP Envy).

I've been wary about USB interfaces, as I have an M-Audio Ozone that had a lot of issues. However, I've been pleased so far with the C400.

          Pros:
          - Lightweight but solid
          - Plenty of IO for basic audio, including two XLR's for mic with phantom power
          - Independant main and headphone volume
          - Pretty easy to install and get working
          - No configuration necessary in ProTools when installed first
          - Simultaneous IO for monitoring while recording (recording vocals, for example)

          Cons:
          - If the C400 is plugged intp my laptop when I booting, Windows 7 says I need to reboot my computer for changes, every time.
