Product Highlights
  • Maximum Height of 51.4"
  • Load Capacity of 22 lb
  • 8x Carbon Fiber Legs
  • Forged Aluminum Chassis
  • Rapid/Reversible Center Column
  • Short Center Column for Low-Angle Shots
  • Folds Down to Just 13.4"
  • Weighs Just 1.8 lb

The Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod is a supremely lightweight, compact tripod that extends to a maximum height of 51.4" and folds down to just 13.4" for easy transport. Weighing only 1.8 lb, the T-1205X supports loads up to 22 lb thanks to its relatively thick upper leg sections and forged aluminum chassis construction.

With legs composed of 8x carbon fiber, the T-1205X tripod is suitable for use with just about any head and any 35mm camera, DSLR, point & shoot, or camcorder. It's an excellent travel model due to its light weight and the fact that its legs fold upward to achieve a folded length of only 13.4". That's a figure that won't necessarily grow if you attach a head – the legs extend past the height of many head models that you'll mount, so the entire package stays very compact to fit comfortably in most carry-on bags and backpacks.

The tripod's center column is reversible, and the T-1205X comes with a short center column so that you can set up extremely close to the ground for ultra-low-angle shooting. With the short center column installed, you can set the legs at their wide angle (80°) and shoot from only 5.1" from the ground.

Forged aluminum results in stronger components than the traditional casting process that's often used for tripod chassis. Forging leads to more compacted metal and enhances the integrity of metal grains so they remain consistent and continuous. This leads to a longer product life and better performance
An anodizing surface treatment, produced by an electrolytic oxidation process to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts, is applied to increase corrosion & wear resistance and surface hardness, and to enhance color durability
Silicone twist locks for leg stages
Anti-leg rotation system makes setup faster
Automatic-leg angle lock mechanism for speed and convenience – independently lock legs into place at two different angles
Short center column allows the tripod to reach extremely low positions – minimum height of 5.1"
Leg warmer on one leg facilitates handling in extreme weather conditions and helps protect it
Center column hook allows you to add a ballast for a sturdier setup in windy conditions
Well-designed padded travel bag with sturdy shoulder strap for carrying
Load Capacity 22 lb (10 kg)

This is a tripod I would love to love, but...

It is incredibly small and lightweight, making it perfect for travel or backpacking. A little short (even fully extended) so if you are pushing 6 ft tall it will leave you hunched over.

It appears to be very well made. Nice fit and finish, good appearance, quality materials, etc.

The downsides are significant. Sirui engineers have seen fit to make the leg angle too narrow which in turn has significant impact on stability. The footprint is just too small. Combine the small footprint with the long center column to bring it up to usable height (even longer when the extension is added) and the thing becomes unusabley unstable on anything but the flattest, firmest of surfaces.

Spreading the legs introduces a new set of problems since it not only lowers the tripod, but now the lowest/smallest leg sections begin to flex under the weight of attached gear.

To be fair, I am not using lightweight gear on this thing. Commonly a Canon 7d and 24-105 L or Tokina 11-16 lens. Forget putting a 100-400 L lens on it!

The best use I have found is for those low to the ground shots with the ultrawide lense, but I could use a mini tripod just as well at a fraction of the price for those.

All that said, a few days ago I carried this thing on a 7 mile hike through a wilderness area and loved its light weight. Got some good, low shutter speed shots of some waterfalls, but I just can't get over how unstable the thing feels set up when I have a couple grand of gear sitting on top of it.

If you buy, be very aware of the tradeoffs you are making with this tripod. It could be perfect for some, while others will find it of marginal or even poor functionality.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I have several larger tripods(Gitzo) but I needed a smaller and lighter tripod for traveling, hiking and backpacking. Even fully extended it is stable enough for lighter cameras. For macro applications it can be used with legs reversed - column facing down.
It benefits from a high quality head. I am using an Arca Swiss P0 which works great on it. For transportation the legs can be reversed to achieve the smallest length and this also works with this tripod head perfectly (see picture).

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I bought this item specifically for backpacking trips. As advertised it is light and compact, it fit easily into my backpack and added little weight. I did find it is not the most stable when used with the legs opened at their smallest angle from vertical (fyi, my camera and lens weighed approximately 4 lbs). I caught it a few times tipping over on this setting. After that I made sure to spread the legs more or to keep the camera strap in my hand to make certain it didn't tip over. Despite this issue it met all my needs and I'm glad I purchased this item. Good value for the price.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I purchased this tripod because I wanted a lightweight, compact tripod I could take with me pretty much anywhere, but particularly on hikes for landscape photography. I also wanted something with a decent load weight and good quality so it would last a long time as I upgrade equipment over the years (I currently have a Canon Rebel T4i). This tripod has filled this need very well. I know with a larger, heavier tripod, I would leave it behind. Adding a ball head adds weight but the I purchased the G-10 and it fits almost totally within the legs when folded so does not add to the folded length. I also found the twisting legs very quick and easy to setup and back fold-down. It also comes with a good quality carrying case. Only negative is it can be a tad unstable when full extended was the last section of the legs are quite thin. There is a hook to add extra weight (e.g. hang your backpack) to help with that if needed.

The tripod appears to be well constructed. Make no mistake, it's not a Gitzo or any high end tripod. But it doesn't cost 3 times either.
The features that I was looking for were short colapse size, tall enough while extending all legs without extending center column, and stable enough for quick work while on travel. This tripod seems to have it all.
Now if you 6 foot tall and plan to use this tripod standing up, this tripod isn't going to help. I'm 5'5, and at the max height w/o center column up, the camera view finder is at my shoulder, which causes me to bend down a little bit.

One thing negative that I have to say, the smallest section of the legs seems to be very weak for long exposure shots. You can tap on it and feel its vibration. For long exposure, I'd use the first two leg sections ans squad down instead of use all leg sections.

Overall it's a good tripod that gears toward people who travel light, and I didn't regred the purchase a bit.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Really light, folds small but quite sturdy. Seems very well made. Fits easily into my carry-on luggage and light enough that I can carry it around all day in my backpack. Quick to set up and take down, and a pleasure to use. If it had retractable spikes it would be perfect, but for me that is a minor point. No regrets about the purchase.

Picked this up right before flying to Cancun from which i returned yesterday. It is incredibly light and super sturdy. I would've completely overlooked the company if it wasn't for the salesman in the store which pointed this out for me and because of that I'm really glad I consulted someone for advice while in the store. Because of its collapsed size and weight, I was really sceptical of the sturdiness but once i opened it up it really shocked me at how great it holds up.

I use this with my Benro BHD2 ballhead and its a bit awkward since the ballhead is heavier than the tripod but in general its a great set up and I had no problem traveling with it. I would give this 10 stars if I could, its worth every penny.

the bag that it comes with is a really nice touch as well, not to mention the generous warranty. I really cant ask for anything more. my expectations are surpassed more so than with any other photographic purchase i've ever made

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Chose this model as replacement for the T-025. It is steadier for manual shutter release of my NEX camera with 18-200 lens. Light, sturdy, compact, versatile. Fast to setup/ fold. It appears as overkill for my camera/ lens combo based on the load rating. But the lighter T-025 in full extension did not prevent vibration when pressing shutter release manually. This model can be used as the table tripod as well as the field tripod. Short center column accessory can be used in table application or as an extension of the standard column. My only nitpick is lack of retractable metal points on the bottom. I have had many different tripods for different applications. With this one, I can get rid of most and save on weight and space without losing versatility. The winner.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I went to the Superstore in NYC to buy a tripod while on a vacation in NYC. I spent almost an hour working with a sales person to get just the right combo of function, size, weight and price.

Could I have purchased a taller tripod? Yes, but I wouldn't have a great travel tripod that folds up nicely in my camera bag.

Could I have purchased a tripod that could handle more weight? Yes, but I would have had to spend almost double the money.

The tripod is well built. The twist locks work much better than a snapping clamp lock in my opinion. They feel like they are grabbing much tighter and I don't have to worry about them slipping. The tripod is sturdy with a Nikon D300, gimbal head, and a 300mm 2.8 lens (we tested this in the store). It held the weight just fine. It comes with a case, which is nice and it also has grips on two of the legs for cold weather comfort. That has already come in handy.

I just love the Sirui T-1205X tripod. It is very light and compact, but still sturdy. It is ideal for travelling and hiking... or just about anything! The maximum loading capacity is 22 lb, so it is good even for a big SLR with a big lens. It is well designed (it has 5-section legs and 3-angle leg settings for the perfect adjustment, allows low-height shooting, has a center column hook for extra stability) and it even comes with things like leg warmers and a carry bag, which many other brands (even the very good ones) do not include. I love my tripod and I would recommend it to anyone without hesitation. A tripod is a must for taking good photos, but you have to have one that is easy to carry and easy to use otherwise it stays at home gathering dust. This tripod, you'll take with you everywhere.

Seriously, I'd never heard of Sirui before I started my search for an ultra-compact carbon fiber tripod. Most of my sticks are Gitzo, but this time I needed something smaller that would easily fit in a Porta-Brace camcorder bag. I wasn't expecting much, but when I received the T-1205X, I was impressed. The build quality was excellent. It held my DLSR and camcorder steady and firm. Even with a ball head attached the Sirui would easily fit in my camcorder bag. At the price, this tripod is an incredible bargain. It is now my go-to travel tripod.

This is my first-ever tripod. As I have been getting more and more into photography I have realized that I need a tripod for some of the shots I want to take. However, I knew that any tripod I purchased needed to be lightweight and versatile. Otherwise, it would just languish in a closet collecting dust.

So far, I love this tripod! It's light, sturdy, compact, easy to set up and collapse. I find myself using it even more than I thought I would. I'm trying to think of negatives but I can't really think of any. If I had to do it again, I'd still buy this tripod. It's worth every penny.
