My general stance is that the only good thing to do with a printer is smash it up, a la "Office Space" -- I usually find them to be a constant and diverse source of intense frustration. That said, I finally decided that a decent printer was necessary for our business, and spent some time researching models and options. I've only owned this printer for a few weeks, but so far I am very impressed, and tentatively inclined to conclude that with printers, getting the "free" models with your computer purchases is probably a mistake -- I should have done my homework and invested in a serious device sooner.
SET-UP & FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
With all that as caveat / preamble, I have been extremely impressed with the HP 8600 Plus. It was very easy to set up, including very straightforward networking. I was very impressed with how quickly we had it up on our network and successfully working from multiple devices, including smart phones. The touchscreen display is excellent, and a very satisfying way to interact with and set up this printer.
NETWORK SET-UP & ACCESS:
Likewise, I'm highly impressed with the numerous ways that this device can be accessed and used, including the many ways it can be accessed remotely via the internet. The printer "apps" seem a bit gimmicky and I haven't used any of them yet, but I was a little more impressed than I expected to be after perusing a few.
The printer also has it's own email address, which is pretty darn cool -- send an email to the printer (with or without attached file(s) / photo(s)), and it prints automatically. Can't control print settings that way, but still a very handy way to ensure access both in and out of the home. In practice, I've found it to be a little erratic as to whether it actually prints the emails it receives -- some seem to be ignored. Not sure why that is yet, but it's nice when it works (and you get a confirmation email for successfully printed emails, so you're not left wondering).
Also, there are a couple related iOS apps. I wish it was a little more clear which app(s) one actually does or doesn't need for this printer, but I went ahead and downloaded / tried them all. The "HP Home & Biz ePrint" app and the "HP Printer Control" app are the best, and they seem like they will be very good ways to monitor and control the printer, even when away from home.
All in all, there are a few minor kinks to work out, perhaps, but this is a seriously well-connected printer, and this aspect of the device has clearly been carefully attended to and designed. Great confidence that HP will continue to expand and refine this aspect of the device.
PRINTING:
The responsiveness and print time is excellent. Print quality seems fine, though I haven't been completely blown away by the "photos" that I've printed to paper. This could be a function of the paper or settings I used; not a priority for me, however, so I'm satisfied with print quality.
Not sure yet how long the ink lasts, but my impression thus far is that this will be a vastly superior value to the execrable Epson NX420 that I had previously (which was an absolute ink-scam of a device).
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
I haven't used the scan / fax functions yet. The paper tray, duplexer, and top-loader all seem to work very well, so that gives me confidence about the ease and quality of the scanner. Not sure I care about faxing, but it's there.
SIZE, & OTHER IMPRESSIONS:
This device is large, but actually it's not quite as big as I expected. It sits a little taller than my prior hated Epson NX420, yet the footprint is about the same. So while this is much larger than a little dorm-room printer, it's not huge; I consider the size reasonable for all that it does, and reassuring that this is a serious piece of equipment, *not* some rinky-dink junk solely designed to squander costly ink.
All in all, I am very impressed with the user experience, the versatility of the device, the ease of set-up, the user-experience of the HP websites and apps related to this device, and the general sense of quality and value that the whole experience emanates.
CONCLUSION: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. 4 OR 5 STARS.
In conclusion, I'm very satisfied thus far, and would highly recommend this device both for serious home use and small-business use. Plus if you shop around, you can find some good deals that are much better than the MSRP (B&H's offer was the best I found, and a very, very good value in my opinion). If the lifespan and ink-usage are of comparable quality and value to my first impressions, then this is definitely a 5-star device; otherwise, a satisfying 4-star device.

Just received printer today and it would not align printer head during set-up. Called HP. After talking to three different representatives and spending a total of 20+ minutes on hold they wanted to send me a refurbished unit. I want a new unit. I have not printed a single page from this unit. They need to raise issue to customer service manager who is presently not available. I can understand sending a refurbished unit if I had been using it for six months but a DOA should be replaced with a new printer. Very frustrating experience.

Comments about HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-In-One Color Inkjet Printer:
I bought this to use at work, since I am often printing out short (less than 20pp.) documents, or having to scan signed ones and / or fax them. I was set up in 10 minutes and it has worked exactly as advertised. The HP software to print from "the Internet" is garbage and never worked or let me get set up; that's nothing new with HP though: their software tends to be a big disappointment in my experience.

Comments about HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-In-One Color Inkjet Printer:
I'd give this printer 5 stars for its excellent basic functions and 2 sided copying convenience. However, my satisfaction with the product diminishned after I began receiving annoying and unwanted "e print" apps sent to my machine dailly from HP. E print is basically HP Spam designed to get you to use more ink.
The problem, is that HP makes it very difficult to turn off or disable. Unless you disable all internet features from the machine. This is what I had to do to stop the unwanted daily E prints.
I stronglly suggest ignoring all apps and using this otherwise excellent printer for you home office needs.

Easy set up, great colors, quiet and does the job it is suppose to do. I've always had great luck with HP eqipment, especially the printers. The wireless works great and was very easy to set up. The CD guides you through and makes the set up very simple. And thanks to B&H, you can not beat the price.

Just getting started with the printer. So far so good. After loading the software I had to figure out how to get it to default to draft/black ink. Once I did we were good to go. The printer connects to the internet wirelessly and you have several apps to choose from but you then find out most are Trial versions and will cost extra except Stamps.com. While printing a CD label, I did have the machine pull an additional piece of paper from the tray. I will remember to empty the tray of paper next time I do a special printing like this. Looking forward to using the duplexer, just haven't yet. The ink cartridge can be refilled DIY or you can purchase compatible ink to save $$.

I'm using it at home. It works as advertised. I've only had it a week but it works well. No issues so far. The wireless access is really nice. The ink is always a pain with a printer like this, but for the price, it's a trade off.

I use the Officejet 8600 for printing, scanning and faxing. It was easy to hook up and access from my network including iPads. I was done with the setup before I realized it.
It feeds paper well for printing or scanning and prints really fast.
The only challenge has bee to set up emailing or scanning directly from the 8600 to my Mac on the network. (But I haven't bothered to call because I can scan from my Mac which sits next to the machine.
B & H staff actually helped me to decide between this all-in-one and the Epson or Canon equivalent.
Get HP's extended warranty directly from HP.
I will get another one for my vacation home/office

This is a great home and home office printer on so many levels -- Sharp color, quick printing, every function you need (copy, scan, fax) easy to initiate from computer or printer touch screen -- Plus it can receive and will then print documents via email from ANYWHERE! So my daughter can print projects while still at school, I can print documents from a client site, etc. Great product and great price on B&H.

After setup, everything works really well. Had an issue with the ink cartridges though.
Started the printer and went through the instuctions, everything was perfect until I had to instert the ink cartridges. The M color would not lock on into place. Took the carriage out, one of the springs were bent. Unbent the spring and everything worked great.

I use this printer in my home office. When it arrived it was bigger than expected but all of its functions and features make up for the slightly giant size for my home office. It's great that it handles both legal and letter size paper and I love that it's wireless. I've only had it a few weeks but it's been printing perfectly. So easy to use and I hooked it up on 3 MacBooks, 1 iMac, 1 iPod Touch, 2 iPhones and 2 iPads. All work great. The online feature with a unique printer email is very cool to print from anywhere with sending an email. double sided printing works as expected. printing speed is fast. This is a great printer and it has so many cool features that I really want to like it, but it has one major flaw. If you use the ADF for copying/scaning, the result will be an image that is slightly skewed. I originally bought the same printer from [@] and had this problem, so I tried B&H and sure enough it had the same issue. I just tried having HP replace it and the replacement has the same issue. Three for three means a product flaw that is not acceptable.

The CD guides you through and makes the set up very simple. And thanks to B&H, you can not beat the price.

HP still makes the best all-in-one machines and this is no exception. Easy to use, nice-looking, nothing to criticize really.

Great product except: bought 4 within the past 6 months & 3 of 4 wouldn't print slick photo paper. Other than that, no problems!

I have a small home based business and my of "all in one" bit the dust I purchased this one. It has a larger paper capacity so I am not adding 20 sheets all the time and so far has worked great. I set this one up wireless so my CFO could print from her laptop.

I use this printer in my home office. When it arrived it was bigger than expected but all of its functions and features make up for the slightly giant size for my home office. It's great that it handles both legal and letter size paper and I love that it's wireless. I've only had it a few weeks but it's been printing perfectly. I've been printing self-stick address labels, envelopes, and scanning both legal and letter size documents. Great bundle of functions for the price. I'm very happy with my purchase.

So easy to use and I hooked it up on 3 MacBooks, 1 iMac, 1 iPod Touch, 2 iPhones and 2 iPads. All work great. Print quality is great and you can do a draft mode to conserve ink, since I don't need great printed items for most things I print. The online feature with a unique printer email is very cool to print from anywhere with sending an email. double sided printing works as expected. printing speed is fast. Scanning options are great...scan to email or computers and select file type for image. BH has best pricing by far!
