The SB-700 Speedlight Shoe Mount Flash from Nikon is an on-camera flash, designed for use with Nikon DSLR cameras that use the i-TTL metering system. It is compatible with DX and FX sensors, and its power zoom head covers a 24-120mm range when used with an FX camera.

You'll be able to use the strobe directly on your camera via the hot shoe, or wirelessly as a Commander or Remote. Using the flash as a Commander allows you it to take control over other Nikon Speedlights, expanding your creative lighting options. As a Remote, it can be controlled by another Speedlight, or your camera's built-in flash. Its Quick Wireless Mode, with A:B light ratios, allows you to quickly adjust settings on multiple flash units -- giving you the ability to control two remote units in i-TTL mode.

It features a dot-matrix LCD control panel with an intuitive layout for easy operation. It derives power from AA batteries -- supporting rechargeable NiMH, disposable Alkaline, and disposable Lithium cells. Recycle time is a scant 2.5 seconds when using NiMH, 3 seconds when using Alkaline.

The SB-700's Thermal Cut-Out detection prevents the flash from overheating. It increases the recycling time if the temperature of the flash head crosses a certain threshold, preventing the unit from becoming damaged.

The strobe includes hard plastic-type color filters for fluorescent and incandescent color temperature balancing. When you use these supplied filters, the flash is able to recognize which filter is installed, adjusting the white balance automatically on compatible Nikon DSLR cameras. It also features an AF-assist illuminator lamp, which helps to speed up the autofocus of your camera in low-light situations.

The SB-700 supports three illumination patterns -- standard, center-weighted, and even -- for use in different shooting situations. Standard mode provides conventional flash coverage. Even mode covers the subject with even light across the entire frame, perfect for group photos where even illumination is desired. Center-weighted mode directs the light to the center of the frame, creating a vignette around your subject that is suitable for portraiture.

I chose to go the SB-700 route (as opposed to it's more expensive big brother the SB-910) for one primary reason, it's a better value for me in my particular circumstance. As a working photographer I've been hauling around studio lights for 20+ years but have lately been turned on to creating a more compact kit that mantains quality and versatility and perhaps even gives an advantage or two (for instance it's a whole lot easier to get these speedlights into tiny places than full size studio monolights)My solution has been to create a "kit inside a kit" I actually have a relatively small pelican case that fits inside a larger pelican case that holds studio lights. When I only need the speedlights I just grab the smaller case and a bag of stands/modifiers.So why the SB-700? Like I said, bang for the buck. The GN of 92 (ISO 100/ft) is about 2/3 of a stop lower than that of the SB-910 but I can buy 3 of them for less than the cost of 2 of the 910's. It's a good choice for me. If I need more power, will be shooting for an extended period of time, will be shooting a large quantity of frames, or want more versatility in my modifiers then I can go the monolight route anyway (to take advantage of fan-cooling, power, etc)Careful selection of modifiers will really help turn these speedlights into an exceptionally portable/fast studio facsimile with but a few limitations. As for the Nikon CLS system. Well I am pretty old school and probably haven't taken full advantage of it just yet, preffering to shoot in manual and get incident readings when possible, but in the few times I've played with it I've been pleasantly surprised at the results.I do however rely on pocket wizards (Flex TT5 and Mini TT1) for remote triggering as I find it the most dependable solution on the planet. I tend to keep things as simple as possible so I don't generally use a lot of lights but the fact that my monolights and my SB's are both triggered by my pocket wizards allows me to use both at the same time. This means that I basically have expanded my studio kit at a fraction of the cost. In order to make up for slight difference in color temp between mono's and sB's I light the most significant areas of the image with the same system relegating the other to secondary positions. By doing this the need to actually balance the different sources with gels is significantly reduced.Overall the accuracy and consistency of the Nikon SB-700 makes it a very valuable tool for me.

As a previous owner of the SB 600 I cannot agree that this flash is much superior. It is useless with older film cameras. The SB 600 was fully compatible with older equipment and a bit more powerfull also. With digital cameras this flash is limited to spot metering in the iTTL mode while the SB 600 could be used in matrix and center weighted metering modes. Nikon charges much more for this flash yet offers us fewer metering options. Yes it can be used as a commander if multi flash setups is your thing and comes with useful accessories. although the flash shoe has a plastic tripod connection.

Build quality is OK, nothing to brag about though. The rotating flash head is a bit wobblier than on the SB 600. The matrix LCD panel is not as easy to see either.

Overall the flash does what is expected but backward compatability is pretty much abandoned. For the $100 premium Nikon is asking for this unit over the SB 600 I feel they could have offered more.

Indoor and outdoor (fill in) flash. Great results and easy to use. The unit is reasonably priced relative to the other Nikon flashes but still has great features. The construction is solid other than the battery door which is difficult to open an feels flimsy.

Comments about Nikon SB-700 Speedlight Shoe Mount Flash:

I bought this based on reviews for my new Nikon D7000 a few years ago. I use the camera infrequently now that my iPhone camera has improved. But having a dedicated flash unit improves pictures of the D7000 tremendously. You don't realize it until you have one and compare to the integrated flash on the D7000. This unit h as many features better described by others. There are two cons from my perspective as a casual enthusiast. First, it's hard to learn the special features like fill flash when shooting outdoors in overcast conditions. With more reading I can probably figure it out. Second, last night on Halloween the battery door just broke into pieces while I was trying to replace the batteries. The door is not well designed in my opinion and it was always a bit tricky to push in on the button and slide to unlock the plastic door. Last night the thing fell into 5 pieces and one I still can't find. Maybe it fell out somewhere else along the way. Have a look at this issue and be careful. I suspect this is a design issue so I'm posting in hopes others will notice this who had the same issue and report it.

Comments about Nikon SB-700 Speedlight Shoe Mount Flash:

I pair this with a nikon D7100 and the combo takes near-perfect pics for me. this is a very good, flexible and smart flash with a number of capabilities and features that will surprise you if you are a novice enthusiast like I am. I have not tested any remote capability and have only used the flash mounted on the camera.I have used the iTTL mode primarily and it works with the camera to identify the focal length and apparently set itself. It works without slowing down the camera's shooting behavior. while shooting, you can select flash dispersion and adjust flash compensation by .3eV steps up or down. That was especially useful with close-up portrait shots. The SB-700 has a white foil sheet that extends out with the diffuser panel and that panel is useful for softening the light even further without beaming.Shots where i failed to use the diffuser properly when the subject was too close did not saturate and were 'fixable' within ViewNX2 or Irfanview via contrast adjustment, gamma adjustment, color curve or exposure compensation. More pictures were salvageable using this flash, as far as I have seen as compared to shots with other flashes I have had. (Yes, I have some awful pictures saved to evaluate new software, though I prefer to take pictures that need no work at all. I am certainly not alone i that for certain.)I am giving this flash five stars because it starts off performing excellently and provides such power and flexibility to enhance the use of my D7100. And I'm just getting started with it.
