I use this product primarily at church for some of the synth/sounds with my keyboard. But I use it more heavily as a cheap drum machine for click tracks.

It is really easy to use. Simply plug into the MIDI Out on your board/controller and plug that into the MIDI in on the iRig. And once you have a MIDI enabled app opened, it is good to go. No software install or anything like that.

If you are new to MIDI, like I am, know that your sound will be produced the iOS device, not the keyboard...per se. So you would want to run a line from your headphone jack to you speaker.

I would recommend the minimum setup (what I have).
-4 channel mixer (this allows you to manipulate the sound and possible the EQ of the iOS device better than the volume button on the iOS device.

-3mm stereo to 1/4" stereo Y cable...plug this into your iOS device and the Y cable into the mixer. Now one thing I noticed, for me at least, the sound comes out distorted unless you pan left or right on the mixer. This is weird but useful. Let's say you are running a click track but want to layer the sound...to build up. Make your light stuff pan center and the stack your heavy pan right. Turn the nob pan left and you get only the light, but turn it pan right and you have stacked sound.

-1/4" stereo Y to 1/4" stereo Y cable...run your keyboard into a different channel on the mixer. Now you can play keyboard sounds AND MIDI sounds at the same time. You can also mix the volume are completely mute on source altogether.

-Then a line to run from the mixer's output to either speakers or an separate mixer.

The only two things that I don't like...well...1.5 things:
      1. It doesn't sit flush in the iPad as it does with an iPhone or iPod. It works fine, and given the way it sits, it's pretty stable, but I see the weight of the cords pulling it down a little bit so it isn't 100% stable. The other thing...or "half issue" is the fact that it is kinda lightweight/flimsy. No metal casing...straight plastic. So you need to make sure you take good care of it.

But it is great for live sound. I love it and I think it is way easier than going through all of that camera dock stuff people are doing. The added benefit is the fact that it keeps your device charged while using it...

***NOTE ABOUT CHARGING*** They include this rinky-dink micro-USB cable in the box that's like 4 inches long...mild exaggeration. They say that this is for charging purposes and to ensure the device doesn't mess up, blah, blah, blah. I tried plugging a regular micro-USB phone charger in, and just like they said...it didn't work. Solution? If you have you iPad/iPhone/iPod wall charger (block), get one of those longer thick micro-USB cables. I'm guessing the thicker one carries more current to power the iPad. Problem solved. But it will be a nightmare trying to work with that little cable.

If you have a new Ipad you need a 30 pin to lighting adapter. That plus the iRig adapter makes for 3 inches of plastic sticking out of the Ipad interface. Not real sleek.

I actually abandoned ship with the whole thing after a week because the Ipad Apps kept crashing on me for live use. I think the Irig works, but the apple midi capabilites on tablets haven't quite caught up.

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig MIDI Core MIDI Interface for iPhone / iPod touch / iPad:

Got this for my iPad mini and had to purchase an expensive genuine Apple adaptor cable for the charging-while-plugged in feature to work. That said, it does what it sets out to do with midi in/out but it has some measurable jitter issues when trying to feed a signal back into the iPad. Not sure if this is due to the iRig or the iPad itself. Probably the latter.

The item arrived as expected, fast order process, and device is very good. I used it next day it arrived in a concert and worked fine. The only issue I got is that when you used a sustain pedal and change the sound while the sustain pedal is pressed, the previous sound stay activated until you select it again and release the sustain pedal. This is something that has to be fixed. Otherwise, product works fine.

The iRig MIDI Core is the best way to connect some Ipad to a DAW (The wireless connections are always bringing some latency).
I use iRig to create a control surface for Cubase made of 6 iPads running simultaneously 48 tracks (total recall) on a powerful PC through 2 Motu MicroLite midi interface, . The iPad's app working perfectly in a wired configuration is "Daw Remote HD".
IRig Midi Core also allows you to charge the iPads at the same time.
                    Stunning!!!
                    I highly recommend this product:)

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig MIDI Core MIDI Interface for iPhone / iPod touch / iPad:

For oustanding MIDI traffic control on IPAD or Iphone this does the trick. Ive tested it on both devices with various soft synths and works great. I would give it 5 stars, but every once in a while I have to I seem to lose connectivity and have to quickly reset the device (rare) not sure if it is my midi rig or the device. glad I bought it. now I dont have to bring a laptop to many gigs..
