The red Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm / 30-110mm Lens is a compact and easily portable digital camera with both a 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR Zoom Lens and a 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 telephoto lens included. The mirrorless design allows the camera to be extra-small and lightweight, while still retaining all of the best qualities of a mirrored model. Featuring a 10.1 MP CX-Format High-Speed AF CMOS Sensor and an EXPEED 3 dual image processor, this small device packs some punch. The sensor enables great photos even in low light, while the EXPEED 3 enables superior system performance, high-speed processing, advanced phase detection autofocus and high-speed data transfer rates.

The included 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR zoom lens features up to 3x magnification and a silent stepping AF motor (STM). It has image stabilization (VR II) to combat the effects of camera shake. The angle of view ranges from 29° 40" to 77°. The lens's minimum focus distance is 0.66' (0.2m), and the filter size is 40.5mm. The 10-30 mm is a versatile lens for applications ranging from wide-angle to tight portrait shots, and applies 3 aspherical lens elements to ensure high image quality, even at the widest aperture settings. The 10-30mm zoom range enables excellent capture of fine detail, even in far-away shots. Internal Focusing / IF technology enables more compact, lightweight construction, as well as a closer focusing distance. A multi-layer lens coating helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level.

The included 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 telephoto lens (81-297mm 35mm equivalent) works great for isolating subjects from their backgrounds with clarity, and also has Internal Focusing / IF to maintain compactness of size--even when using the zoom. It also has image stabilization (VR II) to combat the effects of camera shake. Its telephoto coverage makes it great for a wide array of scene types, from sports to portraits. Enjoy superior sharpness and color correction-even at the widest aperture. Your photos will be crystal clear and sharp, even those taken from far away. Capture sweeping vistas with the wide depth of field. Nikon's Super Integrated Coating helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level, and also assists in the creation of superior color balance and reproduction. ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass reduces chromatic aberration to allow for superior sharpness and color correction. The lens's angle of view ranges from 8° 20" to 29° 40". The lens has a minimum focus distance of 3.3' (1.0m) and a filter size of 40.5mm.

The J1 camera has an interchangeable lens system, allowing you to select from 3 optional 1 NIKKOR lenses in addition to the included one. There's even a lens designed specifically for movie filming. Swapping lenses is quick and easy, enabling you to stay at-the-ready at all times. Aside from the 10-30 and 30-110 mm focal lengths of the included lenses, you may choose a single focal length of 10 mm or a 10-100 mm zoom.

A highly responsive autofocus and a fast shooting speed ensure that you never miss a moment. You get 10 fps continuous shooting speed in autofocus mode, so your camera won't lag behind the action. An impressive 73 point AF array gives you amazing clarity, even when capturing fast-moving subjects. A large 3.0" LCD color screen features a 460k-dot resolution and an anti-glare coating for easy viewing, even in bright sunlight.

When the Nikon 1 J1 came out I was not impressed. Only 10mp and a New smaller sensor? What was Nikon doing? So in 2012 I bought a Panasonic GX1 instead with it's larger Micro 4/3 sensor and 16mp vs. the Nikon's 10mp and I don't regret that choice, However now it's 2014 and I'm revisiting the J1 and Liking it alot and here's why: - Image Quality is Very Good the Smaller sensor with 10mp has close to the same pixel density as a 4/3 sensor at 16mp which means Noise at Higher ISO's is about the same. - With the two Kit Lenses 10-30mm and 30-110 this setup covers the entire range of what most people will use the camera for with the 35mm equivalent of a 27-81 and 81-297 in a very small package with the breakpoint being perfect for an Indoor Family lens and Outdoor Travel lens. - Good metering and output in Auto Scene and Program modes for Point and Shoot users, with easy menu access to Shutter and Aperature Priority modes for those who want to take more control. - I really like Nikon's use of the rocker switch (Top Right on back). Very intuitive especially for Shutter and Aperature control as well as for selecting Single / Continuous shooting modes. - Slow Motion Video Mode! This is almost a best kept secret. For those that want to play with slow motion video the J1 with 640x240 @ 400 frames per second Rocks! Other's may come close but with compact sensors they don't compare. It also does 320x120 @ 1,200 FPS though at that resolution the Quality is lacking for most uses. One Note- The Downside is a 5 second limit on recording time which gives about a Minute long video for 400 FPS clips and a 3 minute at 1,200 FPS. - PRICE! At the time I am writing this (Feb 2014) the J1 has been discontinued as of Dec. 2013, with the New J3 with a 14mp sensor out. What this means is that instead of paying $[@]Retail for the two lens package I paid $299 - You can't even get a High end Enthusiast Small Sensor camera for that. I will say that I would not Pay $699 for this camera package as there are more competitive packages out there, but at $[$]you won't find more camera for the money. Now for the Downsides- - Limited Crop ability if you do a lot of Post Processing. Though 10mp is more than enough for most needs if you do a lot of cropped images you may have to adjust your shooting style a bit since you won't have quite the room to crop like on a 16mp sensor. - Tendency in low light to use Slow shutter speeds more than normal in Auto Exposure modes which can cause motion blur. So in lower light situations it's best to use Shutter Priority mode and 1/60th or faster shutter speed (more if the subject is moving). - Update the Camera Firmware! Not hard to do and Nikon's www site has good instructions, mine was not the most up to date out of the box, and the newer firmware helps to address the tendency to use slow shutter speeds. - Limited Battery Life. If you plan on going out with this camera and making a day of it bring a spare battery or two, as they don't last that long, but on the upside you can get an aftermarket spare for under $[$].Small things I would change: - The Camera will Auto Power On when you unlock the lens for use - It would be nice if it also powered down when you Locked it too. - Put a bigger Buffer in it.. A few more High Speed frames and longer High Speed video would be nice. - Allow a little more user customization on what some of the buttons do. - In different modes it's a bit frustrating to Not be able to start recording video or take a picture (more often than not one of the two functions is not available) Conclusion: The Nikon 1 J1 is a Winner and a Keeper. It does have some limitatations but is positioned very nicely between Point and Shoot's and other mirroless cameras aimed at people more oriented towards a DSLR. Small, Fun and most importantly it takes good pictures without a lot of fuss but still allows a user to use more advanced modes easily. The biggest downside for the Nikon 1 series cameras is that Nikon is Very Proud of them! If I had to Pay the Retail price of $[$]for this package (even after handling and using the camera) I would Not be writing this review, and realistically never have paid more than $500-$550 for the package... But at $299? If I had any intention of getting a camera in this class and passed up this deal I know I would be Kicking myself later on.

Pros:-Very quick focus system.-J1's 1" sensor reflects better pictures than 1/1.7" enthusiastic cameras but less than his peers 4/3's or Aps-c mirrorless cameras, that is, all other in the market except for Pentax Q series.-$[$]is a very good price for a mirrorless camera with two lenses, even so it has just a 1" sensor. Cons:-Basic values as ISO and white balance don't have direct buttons.-No quick menu for quick access to camera parameters.-Menu is not very intuitive for this kind of camera.--Exposition compensation doesn't function in M mode. -The meter doesn't display in A, S, P modes.-Time between shutter release and the live view take longs 3 seconds.-F button can't be customizable (it indicate the type of shoot. A waste of a button)-In the Auto-Mode, the shutter speed that the camera selects when indoors or low light is way too slow for a sharp picture. -Manual focus system is very bad. Useless function.-A little heavy for the camera size and 1" sensor. It doesn't feel secure in hands and it doesn't feel well-built as an enthusiastic camera as Canon G series, Pana LX7 or Pentax Q. -No HDR-No filter NDJ1 has been made not for enthusiastic photographers if not to amateur people who want to upgrade their cheap compact system to some more capable (more IQ and interchangeable lenses). J1 should be the less enthusiastic camera in the mirrorless camera world (maybe with the Canon M). Even the Pentax Q is more functional. An enthusiastic camera is one that allows you to take photos quickly, secure, with shortcut buttons to the values of the camera, with an intuitive menu, sitting well in the hand and with a fast and accuracy performance. And the J1 has many limitations to fulfill that purpose.Suggested retail price was much overpriced ($[$]with 10-30mm and $[$]with 10-30 and 30-110mm) for the system. It was reflected in that only hardcore Nikon users bought the camera at that time. The sales at [$]for the one lens kit) don't seem interesting. Recently at $300 and $200 the camera is attractive to buyers. I bought the two lenses kit at $320 (64% of discount) and the one lens kit is selling for just $200 (69% of discount). At that price point, the camera is OK. For that, I value this camera with 3 stars. If the price would be $400 or more, one or two stars. With a little more money you can buy a Sony 3N or an Olympus EPM2, both much better in IQ, shooter experience (Oly >Sony) and lenses choices.

I would not have bought this camera except for the very low price. Now that I have it, I'm satisfied for the most part. There are features I wish it had--hot shoe, viewfinder come to mind, but it is a great value and nice and small. Weighs a lot less than my bigger Nikons.

I have been watching this set of J1 for a long time, and finally I booked them. This is a great camera, and two great lens, especially the long distance one. The photos it took are extremely good out of my expectation. I love them very much. And the color is shinning, beautiful. It's not very suit for a man, but it would be a wonderful gift to my daughter. By the way, I bought them with the excellent prize. $[*] for the whole set.

For USD$[$], I got this beautiful gear with 2 lenses covering a reasonable range. Most of the time I use 10-30 for daily use unless I intend to shoot people/objects then I switch to 30-110. I bought it to replace the point and shoot camera I had but this is a bit too big compared with point and shooters, especially when putting into the complementary case that came with it. Together it has the size of my DSLR with 35mm fixed lens. I wish it has sweep panorama that add versatility when I shoot scenes outdoor.

Comments about 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm / 30-110mm Lens (Red):

I was looking for something between my bulky DSLR and a point and shoot. Something with more functionality, and interchangeable lenses, but not requiring the full entourage. After two weeks, this fits the bill. I have so far used it only for work purposes, documenting prototype builds, but I plan to take it on a couple of upcoming vacations soon. A true viewfinder would be nice, but that is something I knowingly gave that up in the interest of cost savings. Only disappointment so far is the RAW files are not recognized by my (admittedly old, 5.0) version of Elements. Now my AW100 is reserved for beach & foul weather, but the J1 is by my side the rest of the time.

The camera was purchase primarily for my wife to take picture of the grandkids. Our old camera was not fast enough to capture their activity. We are taking the camera on an overseas trip, and this size works well for travel.

The colour is off. It does not give shape colouring. The pictures often have a yellow over tone to them. The videoing is terrible, it ends when it wants. The videos often gets blurry. The camera get VERY HOT when videoing that the camera give you a warning of the heat and turns off.
The camera takes a long time to take a picture often you will miss the moment waiting for the camera to take the picture.

Comments about 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm / 30-110mm Lens (Red):

When I want to go for a casual walk without 30 lbs of D800E & lenses, I can take 3 lbs of J1 & lenses. For my type of work, virtually always on a tripod & using the best range of the lenses, I can get results nearly as good as 30 lbs of my old D200 & lenses - and substantially better than my G9.

Comments about 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm / 30-110mm Lens (Black):
