Nikon presents their Nikon 1 V1 Mirrorless Digital Camera, outfitted with two lenses: the 1 NIKKOR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens and the 1 NIKKOR 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 VR lens. Well aware that many shooters want versatility without the bulk and weight of a DSLR, the famed imaging company has thrown its hat into the ring with this lightweight, interchangeable lens digital camera. This bundle gives the user both the V1 body and two zoom lenses to get started with. From day one, 10.1Mp photos can be shot and 1080/60i/30p HD video can be captured.
At its heart the V1 has a 13.2 x 8.8 CMOS sensor which uses Nikon's CX image sensor format. Helping to capture stunningly detailed and vibrant footage would be the EXPEED 3 with dual image processors. Aside from quickly transferring information to the SD/SDHC or SDXC card being recorded to, EXPEED 3 enables phase detection autofocus.
The 10-30mm and the 30-110mm lens, along with the other compatible 1 NIKKOR lenses mount to the camera's Nikon 1 mount. No matter what the desired focal length, the V1 captures stills in JPEG and RAW and video in the MOV format, with H.264/MPEG-4 compression. Choices for enhancing both capture modes include adding the optional external ME-1 stereo microphone and using the optional SB-N5 Speedlight in the i-TTL hot shoe.
Integrated tools include a 3.0" LCD display and a 100% view electronic viewfinder, with diopter adjustments. Command and features buttons also work to ensure user-friendliness. Internally, the impressive Advanced hybrid AF delivers 10 frames-per-second capture in autofocus mode and 60fps in manual mode, ensuring a clear shot of moving targets. Whether it's ponies galloping in the surf or an active toddler, Nikon has gone to great lengths to ensure the moment will be captured with clarity. Making this possible is a combination of contrast and focal plane phase detect autofocus, with an incredible 73 point AF array.
Another highlight, Motion Snapshot, captures a succession of images with a just one click. Low light capabilities with a wide ISO range of 100-3200 and 6400, and Smart Photo Selector, which lets the camera handle the settings, also expand the creative possibilities of the V1. With these features, a lightweight and compact body, and interchangeable lenses, the possibilities are endless.
Find the Detail Using 10-30mm Zoom Range: Pick Your Focus Point Frame that wonderful ocean shot or sun setting over the bridge. A superior all-around lens, the 10-30mm commands sharp focus with excellent delivery of details in images taken far away. Versatility is yours as you frame wide camera angles, just the way you like or smoothly zoom out until you find exactly the right balance of details to include in your shot
Pull it Closer: Shoot from Afar Use the full reach of the 10-30mm and bring subjects close. For when you cannot get right up to the action, a 30mm zoom may be just right. Hone in on your subject and hit the shutter. Even at this magnification your photos come out crystal clear and sharp with vibration reduction (VR II)
Vibration Reduction This innovative VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed three stops (eight times) faster. It allows handheld shooting at dusk, at night, and even in poorly lit interiors. The lens' VR system also detects automatically when the photographer pans - no special mode is required
Aspherical Lens Element Aspherical lenses virtually eliminate the problem of coma and other types of lens aberration - even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting the distortion in wide-angle lenses. In addition, use of aspherical lenses contributes to a lighter and smaller lens design
Nikon Super Integrated Coating To enhance the performance of its optical lens elements, Nikon employs an exclusive multilayer lens coating that helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level. Nikon Super Integrated Coating achieves a number of objectives, including minimized reflection in the wider wavelength range and superior color balance and reproduction
Internal Focusing Imagine being able to focus a lens without it changing in size. Nikon's IF technology enables just that. All internal optical movement is limited to the interior of the nonextending lens barrel. This allows for a more compact, lightweight construction as well as a closer focusing distance
Portraits with Impact: Beautiful Portraits Focus on the Person A perfect complement to the 10-30mm, the 30-110mm takes portraiture a step farther. Stunning portraits with soft focus background effects are yours. Compact and easy to carry, realize the most subtle expressions and minute details. 1 NIKKOR lens precision offers superior sharpness and color correction - even at the widest aperture. Because portraits are usually taken spur of the moment, there is vibration reduction (VR II) to keep images blur-free
Focus on the Action: Get in Close - Even from Afar Get up close and personal to inject panache to your sports photography using the 30-110mm lens. Equipped with vibration reduction (VR II), this lens separates subjects from their backgrounds - making it a great choice for honing in on subjects and create photos that are visually vibrant and perfect to upload to your blog or social media sites. Even at the most extended magnification, photos are rendered crystal clear and sharp, making the 30-110mm a perfect option for fast moving subjects from afar
Beautiful Landscape Images Come to Life: Wide Depth of Field Surrenders Dazzling Views Work with extended zoom range using the 30-110mm and produce sweeping looks that express your world. Subjects that need to be isolated from their backgrounds, such as a boat at sail, are easy with this lens. Equipped with vibration reduction (VR II) up to four stops, you'll nab every precise color detail seen with dramatic sunsets

It allows handheld shooting at dusk, at night, and even in poorly lit interiors. The lens' VR system also detects automatically when the photographer pans - no special mode is required
Extra-Low Dispersion Glass Nikon developed ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass to enable the production of lenses that offer superior sharpness and color correction by minimizing chromatic aberration. ED glass offers all the benefits, yet none of the drawbacks of calcium fluorite-based glass. With this innovation, Nikon developed several types of ED glass suitable for various lenses

This is an excellent walk around camera that is a complement to your DSLR system rather than a replacement for it. It is also a great upgrade from pocketable systems.
I bought it primarily for its touted DSLR like autofocus, lack of shutter lag and spot on matrix metering system and it delivers on all accounts. It's the camera I now pick up especially when I don't want to carry a DSLR.
Like all new systems, it won't have every feature that you want. It will however deliver great images with relative ease. Your dog running at you at high speed, no problem. Sports, no problem. Its only real limitation is in very low light. The add on flash addresses those instances.
There are those who say the camera was disappointing because it didn't have feature A or feature B. I say you should have read the spec sheet before buying.

I thought I would use this as backup for my D7000, but this camera is more geared towards a point & shoot method of photography.
Good points about the camera are that the camera is light, picture quality and low light performance is good for the size of the sensor better than a compact but it is not near the performance of a APS sized sensor IMHO. Build quality is excellent, handling is good but you do have to go into the menu a lot if you change exposure modes, metering methods, or AF point selections, if you leave everything on auto this camera will work well for you. AF performance is fast but still lacks for moving objects such as birds, over time as I get used to operating the AF in the tracking mode I may change my mind on this.
The bad, the features are lacking, given the price you are paying for the camera. There is no programmable function button, there is an a "F" button but you cannot change its function. This causes you to have go into the menu to change your exposure, metering, and AF area modes which can lead to missed shots. There is no auto exposure bracketing; I tend to shoot a lot of high contrast pictures so HDR is important to me. Without auto exposure bracketing it makes it a lot harder to do HDR. If do not use HDR this feature will not be missed as much. The picture preview cannot be turned off; this gets downright annoying when trying to take action shots. As soon as you release the shutter button the last picture pops up on the LCD or the EVF for a few seconds. I can understand that this could be useful, but us the ability to turn it off. The camera does not come with a standard hotshoe for flash. This means you have to buy the Nikon dedicated flash which eats up your camera battery and costs about $150 extra. It sure would have been nice to put an SB400 on this camera, but in keeping with the small size of the camera I guess Nikon wanted to keep the flash small, so no speedlights with batteries. It would be nice in the future for Nikon to offer a adapter to fit the accessory shoe on the camera to fit a standard Nikon speedlight. The camera will only display a luminous histogram, or I cannot figure out how to display the RGB channels. I guess we have returned to the days of the D70 only it is worse. At least the D70 had a yellow outline so that it is crystal clear when highlights or shadows were blown out. The V1 is white outline with a white graph which makes it difficult at times to see if highlights or shadows are blown out. Again for the price of the camera Nikon should have given us RGB histograms. The "best shot" and "still motion" shooting modes are a total waste IMHO. But you may care for them, but I would rather have the above features added rather than this fluff.
I was going to return the camera but my wife seems to like it so it solved my problem on what to get her for X-Mas. This camera is not for me but it might be what you are looking for. If the price were about $300 dollars cheaper for the kit I may have thought it was a better value. I guess I expected more from Nikon.

Love the size and that it has a viewfinder. I'm coming from a Nikon D40x. I wish it had a built in flash but couldn't justify getting the V2 since I only paid $ for the 2 lens kit. Very happy with my purchase.

I primarily got this little camera as a travel camera for my wife because she and our daughter are going to Hawaii on a school field trip during Spring Break this year. She had expressed concern about taking our D90 over due to weight while sight seeing. (side note-I was in Hawaii in September 2012 on a photo safari with the D90 and 17-55 D2.8 and I did just fine. So it can be done!)Anyways, BH had this kit for an astounding 2/3 off the list price and there was no way we could pass this up.We've had it a couple weeks and have put it through its paces, and have been pretty impressed with the quality of the images.I even used it recently at a shoot with my D90 with the 17-55 on that, and the 30-110 on the V1. That worked like a champ! At one event I was doing, I used the V1 to capture video and it worked great. One thing to note is, it records in mov format and in order to get it to work with Premiere CS5, I had to change the file extension to mpg.Overall we are very happy with this camera and lens kit.

The camera would not always recognize the lens when turning on the power. About half the time I would get an error message stating I had to contact Nikon service. Sometimes the camera would recognize the lens but would be all blurry. Returned to B&H. Will probably go with the Fuji mirror less system. First time I have seen made in china on a Nikon product. Could explain the sorry quality control. Would have given no stars if I could.

I use the V1 as a light "travel camera" when I don't want to lug my Nikon DSLRs around all day. It has its limitations, but the EVF was the big selling point. Its photo IQ is neat as high as the superb Sony RX-100, but it has the EVF and lighting-quick focussing on fast-moving objects. I use it as a biking camera, too, as it fits in a camera bag and shoot good photos of fast-moving bicyclists.

Comments about Nikon 1 V1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm and 30-110mm Lenses (Black):
I bought this camera as the one I will always have with me. The camera is solid, very well made, yet light and small enough to fit in a coat pocket. Image quality is absolutely stellar for a 10MP camera, far better than I expected. As someone said, "This camera seems like it was designed by Steve Jobs." Why? Because the menus, the buttons are all intuitive and easy to use. Many professional reviewers slammed the camera when it was introduced. My opinion is that the reviews were quickly written and that most reviewers did not take the time to use the camera extensively. Frankly, this camera is revolutionary in many ways, especially the ability to use F-mount lenses via the FT1 adapter which is sold separately.I think this package, including the camera, the 10-30mm and the 30-110mm lenses is an absolute bargain -- a steal if I ever saw one.In sum, WOW, I love this little camera.

After reading various online reviews by professional photographers and seeing the cost for the amount of capability of this camera I couldn't pass up the deal. It is very solid, compact, well built and I am impressed with the quality of the lenses and the cost has been just right for my budget. I am just an amateur photographer with an interest in improving skills. I wished it had an articulating screen but appreciate the view finder, which is more important to me. The auto focus is very, fast and accurate. I wish it had a few more external controls but after using other cameras especially some advanced P&S, I am used to going to the menu for adjustments, and learning workarounds/access to on the fly setting changes. I can as the pro's, highly recommend this camera.

I use this camera mostly with the 18.5mm lense for everyday shooting of my newborn/dogs/street photography. It's so compact that I never leave it at home, it's simply a joy to shoot with. Even with its small sensor I have been very impressed with its high ISO capabilities. The only thing I wish that was different about it is the lack of a grip. However, it is by no means hard to hold or shoot with, a small grip would just make it a bit easier. There is a grip available from b&h :). Overall this camera is exactly what I needed it to be. A fast fun everyday camera that is easy to carry around all day. I honestly leave my dslr at home much more often now due to the fantastic capabilities of this camera.

I bought the V1 on sale to use with theTC1 adapter and my 70-200mm f/2.8 and 200-400mm f/4 lenses. The adapter autofocuses blazingly fast and preserves the original lenses max f-stops. The 10MP sensor has. 2.7 crop factor mashing the bigger zoom a 540-1024mm f/4! Both these lenses work well with a TC 1.4x. Moreover, the V1 has both a mechanical and electronic shutter that permits taking full resolution raw still image files while simultaneously taking HD video. The only drawback is that Nikon has not enabled AF-C with the TC1.

I purchased this camera at the recommendation of Thom Hogan for an affordable wildlife photography set up. The cost and weight of a 400 mm or 500 mm telephoto lens was out of the question for me. I have been using the Nikon 1 V1 with the FT-1 adapter and a 70-200 mm f/2.8 VRII at 200 mm for the equivalent of 540 mm reach and have gotten outstanding photos with this set up. However, the AF-C mode does not work with the FT-1 adapter so tracking is not an option.
I have also found that the camera with the native lenses (without the Ft-1 adapter) works well for action and sports.

I'm a serious photo amateur who usually shoots a Nikon D800 with fast glass. Sometimes I just don't want to lug 5-6 lbs. of DSLR around with me, so I wanted something small and light that still gave me good image quality at a reasonable price. When the cost of the V1 with two lenses dropped, I bought one. I read Tom Hogan's e-book on the J1/V1; necessary since the user's manual that came with the camera doesn't do it justice. There are several useless (for me) shooting modes, but I can set it up the way I want it: aperture priority or manual, white balance, ISO, NEF or JPG, Picture Control, etc., so I can get what I want from the image. The viewfinder is a necessity and it works well. The two lenses span the 35mm equivalent of 28-297mm, although they aren't very fast. Auto-focus is almost instant in anything but the lowest light where it slows down but still works. I can chimp the histogram, but it's only a luminance display, not RGB.You give up some of the configurability that you get with a high-end DSLR, but most of the important items can be set, albeit through a menu instead of buttons. For my purposes, this camera does a fine job and the image quality is fine.

Comments about Nikon 1 V1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm and 30-110mm Lenses (Black):
I decided to downsize from a DSLR (Pentax K-5) to something more portable and affordable. I chose the V1 because of its viewfinder, fast autofocus, and the ability to change lenses. I knew the drawbacks: smaller sensor, less manual control, deeper DOF, etc. If you know and understand what you're getting into with the 1 system, and you're willing to work with it, it's totally capable.
I love the size of the camera. Build quality is excellent; it's hefty in a good way, and about as small as I can imagine being useful for something of its type. The lenses are accordingly small, and considering its reach, the 30-110 is really small. Handling is basic. As many have noted, there's no PASM dial, no way to adjust shooting mode, ISO, exposure compensation, etc. without going into the menu. I thought I'd miss it more than I do. It doesn't affect what I do in 90% of my shots (maybe more). I like the toggle switch for adjusting shutter speed / aperture - quicker and easier than the traditional wheel, in my opinion. Autofocus is quick and accurate. I'm not as blown away as some have been by it, but in an EVIL camera it's the best I've seen.
The real question is about image quality. For me I only shoot RAW with this camera - the jpgs didn't do it for me - and I'm very pleased. Anything up to ISO 800 is very good, and at the very least the noise pattern at 1600 and 3200 (in a pinch) is even and not super distracting. I'm happy with it. Do I wish it did what my K-5 did? Of course, but considering the trade-offs of size, price, and fun factor (I enjoy my V1 more), I'll take it. I'm no pro. I think I'm decent, but the K-5 was too much camera for me in nearly every respect.
Some things I don't like? I would like more manual control, of course, without having to go into the menu system. I said earlier that it's usually not an issue, but it would be helpful. The mode knob / wheel moves too easily for my taste. Manual focus is nearly impossible in my experience. More megapixels would be nice if it didn't decrease image quality (my Sony RX100 is 20MP with the same size sensor). But for me 10MP means I need to compose my picture properly, not just shoot to crop, so maybe it makes me a better photographer in the end. I wish this camera had an integrated flash, but considering that I rarely ever use a flash this is just a wish and not a flaw for me.
In conclusion, this is a keeper for me. I've used it enough that I don't feel like I'm missing out by not having a DSLR, and compared to other mirrorless systems I feel this one is (at its current price) is a bargain for what you get. I bought the 18.5mm (50mm equivalent) f1.8 prime and LOVE it, and have also had good results using an Opteka 10x macro lens with the 10-30mm kit lens for some nice, detailed macro shots.

I wanted a light-weight digial camera that could shoot good B&W for me now that I no longer have a film-based darkroom.
The Nikon 1 is awesome! It is light and small, but even with my large hands it is a 'good' fit, all the controls right were they should be.
I have it in monochrome mode and the eletronic viewfinder shows me the world in B&W, making it easy to look for patterns of light and shadow that make good B&W images.
The files come out a hair grey, but are a quick fix in Photoshop. Miller's made me a print of a hand-held image at 20x30 that blew my socks off, so the image stablization really works!
The camera can almost see in the dark. I didn't buy the optional flash and haven't needed it. This would be a good street-photography rig.
Both lenses are small, light, and snappy. The "folding" lens feature makes them highly portable.
Lovin' it!
