This Nikon 1 SB-N5 Speedlight for V Cameras is designed for use with the Nikon V CX format mirror-less cameras. The SB-N5 mounts to the V camera's multi-accessory port and is powered by the camera--no batteries required. This convenient featherweight (2.5 oz/70 g) flash has a guide number of 27.9' (8.5 m) at ISO 100 and is i-TTL compatible. Exposure modes include Fill Flash, Front- and Rear-Curtain sync and slow-sync and flash compensation.
The effective flash range is 2 to 66 feet, depending on ISO, bounce angle, and aperture, and the head both tilts up 90° and swivels 180° to both right and left. Flash duration is 1/4000 second at full power. Electronic construction consists of Automatic Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) and series circuitry. A capture illuminator lights for six seconds using Smart Photo Selector and Motion Snapshot modes. And, yes, there is a flash-ready indicator.

This is the original flash designed for the V1 - Lightly powered and batteryless. I think that it dovetails with the V1 vision of a convient, portable, yet capable photo system quite nicely. I love it's small size and sophisticated performance. It doesn't light up the room but it's quite nice for fill and works great with the V1. The next generation flash has batteries and more power but I have other equipment should greater power be required. Too bad Nikon didn't design it with a universal hot shoe. Whoever is in charge of Nikons Mickey Mouse pseudo consumer entrapment initiatives is a horses patootie.

I would rate the speedlight higher were it not for the fact that it has a non-standard mounting shoe. This is not really the fault of the flash, but due to design decisions by Nikon.
It does its job well and is compact and light. The swivel/tilt head is nice.

Just a necessary accessory for the Nikon 1 series. It's simple to use and doesn't require a whole lot of thought. If you have a V1, it's the only flash option, better have one since the V1 will disappear eventually and probably so will this flash.

I like this flash as it is light and easy to carry has enough power to lighten up your subject.
The bonus part about this flash is the tilting head.
It can also completely rotate on its axis in both left and right directions.
The flash has i-TTL, which makes it great and I will set it to this mode for camera to take care of the rest.
For me the best part is that I don't have to add extra battery for flash as it uses the camera battery. This is a big plus for me. I just deal with one.
