The Vello FreeWave Viewer Wireless Live View Remote for Canon contains a 3.5" live view TFT-LCD monitor and 2.4GHz radio transmitter to provide a wireless viewing system that also enables remote shutter control from a distance up to 200' away from the camera.

The live view monitor features a 3.5" display with a 320 x 240 resolution that is able to provide a real time view of what your camera is seeing. The monitor's design integrates a remote shutter release button that supports half-press control for pre-focusing and acquiring auto exposure settings. Additionally, an enlarge mode is available for magnifying details within the scene. A dedicated button allows switching between AV (live view) and CCTV modes for different perspectives of monitoring and a channel switch button permits changing between different transmitter channels. A 1/4"-20 tripod socket is located on the bottom of the unit and the brightness of the display can be manually controlled.

The transmitter can attach to the camera via its hot shoe or to a 1/4"-20 threaded mount and connects to the camera using both an AV and a shutter release cable. The AV connection provides the live view signal for remote viewing on the monitor and the shutter release cable allows for wirelessly releasing the shutter from the monitor. A CCTV camera is also integrated into the transmitter's design and incorporates a 45mm lens (35mm equivalent focal length) to provide a slightly wider-than-normal perspective for viewing subjects in front of the camera. The CCTV camera is especially useful for situations when using a telephoto or long lens to photograph details and monitoring when a moving subject is about to enter the frame. Additionally this camera's functionality is ideal for use when the connected camera does not support live view or if trying to conserve the camera's battery life for extended viewing sessions. The 2.4GHz radio transmitter operates amongst four selectable channels for greater control when more than one unit is being used within 200' proximity.

Included with the transmitter and monitor are both AV and shutter release cables, which allow live view monitoring and shutter control with Canon EOS Rebel XS, XSi, T1i, T2i, T3i, T4i, T5i, SL1 EOS 50D, 60D, 70D, 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III, 6D, 7D, 1D Mark IV, 1D X, PowerShot G11, G12, and G1 X digital cameras. If only controlling the shutter via the remote monitor and using the transmitter's CCTV as the viewing source, a wide range of shutter release cables are optionally available. The monitor requires four AA batteries for use and standby operation can last approximately 500 hours, while dedicated use will last approximately 10 hours per charge. The transmitter also requires four AA batteries and will last approximately 100 hours in standby mode and 8 hours in usage mode.

Camera Compatibility
The following cameras support live view monitoring on the wireless viewer when the AV cable is connected between the transmitter and camera:

  • Additionally, remote shutter release and viewing using the built-in CCTV camera is possible by using an optional Vello RCC-N1, RCC-N2, RCC-N3, RCC-O1, RCC-O2, RCC-P1, or RCC-S1 cable for extensive camera support.
    Wireless Monitoring and Shutter Release
The combination of the wireless live view monitor and transmitter enables real time monitoring of the scene at hand using either the compatible camera's live view source or the transmitter's built-in CCTV camera. This allows you to remotely view your composition and release the camera's shutter from a distance, making it ideal for photographing wildlife or shy subjects or for placing the camera in difficult-reach-positions.
    Live View Monitor
The wireless live view monitor has a 3.5" (320 x 240) TFT-LCD screen for viewing either a live view image from the camera or a CCTV image from the transmitter's built-in camera. The viewer's design incorporates a shutter release button as well as controls for enlarging the transmitter's image, changing the radio channel, accessing the menu, and an LED power status indicator is also available for monitoring battery life. The shutter release supports half-press functionality for pre-focusing and setting the auto exposure and, additionally, single, continuous, bulb, and delayed shooting modes are supported. A 1/4"-20 socket is also integrated into the viewer for attaching to a stand or tripod. Power is provided to the viewer by either four AA batteries or a connected USB power source.
    Transmitter
The transmitter operates over an ISM 2.4GHz frequency, with four selectable channels, and provides up to a 200' working range from which to view a live view or CCTV image on the wireless viewer. The transmitter connects to the camera with dedicated cables to both a shutter release and AV input, or just to a camera's shutter release port if using only the built-in CCTV camera for monitoring. The integrated camera uses a 45mm (35mm equivalent focal length) lens to provide a slightly wider-than-normal perspective of the scene in front of the camera, and can attach to a camera via its hot shoe. Alternatively, a 1/4"-20 socket is also incorporated into the design for mounting to a stand or tripod. The transmitter also uses either four AA batteries or a connected USB power supply as its power source.

Comments about Vello FreeWave Viewer Wireless Live View Remote for Canon:

Being able to set lighting while the camera is on a tripod is a big plus. This unit also is a remote shutter release. Unfortunately when plugged in the camera display is disabled. And although mention is made of using it with Olympus cables, I could not find them. And I could not find much info at the Vello site. But the remote viewing is great.

Comments about Vello FreeWave Viewer Wireless Live View Remote for Canon:

great concept of being able to remotely fire cameras while using either the camera live view or the bult-in transmitter cam

the image on TFT-LCD monitor (when using the bult-in transmitter cam) is mediocre but useable; that may not be critical since the camera sees and takes its own view -- I have not yet used the monitor with live view from camera

Comments about Vello FreeWave Viewer Wireless Live View Remote for Canon:

I believe the remote live viewer is a great product. I am using it in a unique manner as a remote camera for motorsports events where it would be too dangerous for a person to shoot from. The only issue I have had is the range of the device, I don't think it will quite the deliver the 100m as promised, but that may be under the parameters I used it for. I do recommend it, and would buy it again; I may purchase another if I get this one dialed in for my unique circumstances to have multiple perspectives.

Comments about Vello FreeWave Viewer Wireless Live View Remote for Canon:

Although I haven't done any real shooting with it yet, I have set it up and taken a few test shots. It works exactly as advertised. It works with my 5D MARK II, my G1X and I can even use it to trigger the shutter on my EOS ELAN 7 E QD. The only thing I can see that might need some improvement is the resolution of the screen. Other than that I am totaly satisfied.

Comments about Vello FreeWave Viewer Wireless Live View Remote for Canon:

I already had a wireless remote for my 5D Mark II but since I treated myself to the 5D Mark III, I wanted to add some more toys to the arsenal. I admit that I don't "need" another wireless remote and my current one has served me well for several years. What caught my eye was the live view which I found intriguing for certain situations in which I find myself.

I am a member of a car club and become the de facto photographer for the group photos with as many as 100+ cars and 200 people. I picked up my original remote so that I could finally get into the group shots I was taking. However, I invariably end of shooting off dozens of pics since in larger groups someone is always looking the wrong way, etc. and there is no way to know when standing there.

With this live view remote, it cuts down on the "wasted shots" since I can see what the group is doing, identify the culprits and ensure I get what I am after. A specialty shot - yes, but one I do regularly and this comes in very handy.

A second use is for fireworks where I usually set up a chair off the side and keep my camera set on a tripod and trip the shutter with wireless remote when I think the shot is there. This live view also reduces the wasted shots that were timed incorrectly when not looking through the camera and just firing at guestimated times.

The one use I am looking forward to is photographing wildlife on my property. Birds generally get spooked by my movement and deer, etc. pick up the scent and stay away but I can sit inside my house and get the shots I would otherwise miss.

So, in short, is it something I "needed"? No.

But as an extra toy during the holiday season it is something I wanted and it will see its fair share of use.

Maybe it's me, but I never could get this device to display images from my EOS 5D Mk II. But it would remotely operate the shutter, and the camera included in the transmitter functioned well. I would recommend this to a friend after explaining that I was unable to view images from my camera after shooting photos--again, maybe that's just me.

Comments about Vello FreeWave Viewer Wireless Live View Remote for Canon:

This is the best product of all the remote camera systems I've tried. One of the ways I use the remote system is with ground based aerial photography. The Vello system is easy to connect and the screen is bright enough even in bright sunlight. The shutter release works the same as on the camera which makes it easy to obtain your shots. I have had no communication problems with the remote. Battery life is has been excellent using the lithium AA batteries…which I would suggest.

If you like remote photography, I highly recommend this product.

It feels cheap, it looks cheap (including the menus) but at the end of the day, if you're looking for the ability to take a photo remotely and see how it's framed when you can't check first through the viewfinder, then this is definitely the product for you too.

I haven't given it too much of a workout with my 1Dx but nevertheless, it does what it says and in the end, that's all that matters.
