The Blackmagic Design 17” SmartView HD Studio Monitor is a 17” LCD screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 in a compact 6 RU design that is only an inch thick. It supports SD, HD and 3 Gbps SDI video formats monitoring in full HD resolution and provides reclocking for looped through outputs, making it suitable for use in multi-monitor applications like post production, broadcast, and live events.

The included software for the Mac OS X and Windows helps to connect several SmartView HD studio monitors to the Ethernet so that  settings can be made remotely through a single location to all the monitors. Thus color matching the numerous monitors in a large video-wall becomes hassle-free with the SmartView HD Studio Monitors.

The tally borders on the screen make it suitable for live broadcasting. Red, green and blue tally lights help to communicate additional information to the users, something more than a simple on-air status.

For the SDI formats that will be invented later on, firmware of the SmartView HD studio monitor can be updated via the Blackmagic Design website for free. The monitor supports video standards that are used in post production, like 1080 progressive HD rates and 2K SDI over 3 Gbps SDI video. As it automatically changes to a new format very quickly, all the video formats can be connected and changed when using this monitor.

I initially avoided this monitor based on other people's reviews that said it looked bad and to get the comparable Marshall. Well, I got a Marshall and it had issues on the screen, blue hazing in some of the pixels that looked like light rays casting down. So I decided to go with the BlackMagic. It looks great!

Now - do note - if you do NOT have external calibration (like an x-rite probe with a Fuji IS-Mini) then you may have the same frustrations as others. There are none of the traditional modes like blue-gun or b&w to let you do traditional calibration. The whites do tend to be bluish out of the box which is normal. However, with calibration tools you can make it look just as it should and for me (video editor - I use it in a table top rack with the BM SmartScope Duo's next to my computer monitor), for the price as a confidence monitor it works fantastic for me.

I gave it four stars instead of five because I think BlackMagic could (and should) easily add these traditional modes as well as markers etc. to the software. That would make it six out five stars.

I never bother writing reviews, but here I gotta say something to Blackmagic after selling all our Smartview HD's They look almost unbelievable on paper (HDSDI support, tally, Full HD resolution, In fact they look sleek and awesome too. I didn't hesitate and bought a couple of them for my studio.I'm never a colorist, but my crew and I could definitely tell how TERRIBLE the image is. The blue tint makes everything looks horrible, and YOU CAN'T ADJUST ANYTHING COLOR-WISE. The viewing angle is horrendous as well. I swear it looks worse than the $100 dell monitors. If you spend an extra $ you could get a Marshall HDSDI monitor which is 10 times better with tones of controls and options--not color critical, but MUCH, MUCH better than the Smartview HD. My honest advice: the marshall is the only 15"-24" monitor worth buying in the higher price range (i've tried the cheap sony and panasonic, they're terrible as well). if you're an editor looking for a grading monitor you probably have to spend a lot more ($+ panasonic, fsi, jvc, ikegami, etc.)The above review does NOT apply to the Smartview Duo--the Duo's are great. I have them all over the studio.

Comments about Blackmagic Design 17" SmartView HD Studio Monitor:

Just horrendous absolutely awful. In other words -- "all Blackmagic, all the time." Colors are dialed in from Venus, and this must be the world's last remaining 6-bit color fidelity monitor. As such, it is crazily overpriced. You'll be best served to pass on it and pay a bit more for something much, much better from another manufacturer.

Comments about Blackmagic Design 17" SmartView HD Studio Monitor:

The only reason I give this 4 stars is because of a lack of HDMI. In the modern era, this is becoming more and more common, even among us professionals. But really, that's a small complaint.

I connected the device to my computer to use for a studio monitor, installed the software, and it worked immediately. I used it with Davinci Resolve (same company that makes this monitor, no wonder it worked flawlessly :)), and Final Cut X, no issues whatsoever.

The controller software was simple to use, and as I add more monitors I'll be able to report on the experience of managing multiple screens, but just messing with the buttons it was easy to identify the monitor I was messing with (even though there was only 1, it still had a color coded border you could turn on).

It's beautiful, fit perfectly onto the rack case I got for it, is light enough to be portable, and already is going to good use.

For the price this can't be beat! very sharp, colour seem accurate although I did not do extensive accuracy testing. it is a great editing monitor, and can work as an entry level colour grading monitor, although if you are grading colour critical stuf I would recommend something with more calibration options. I've graded TVshow with this as a primary monitor and it worked great, have a vectorscope/waveform at hand just to be safe though. The big con of this monitor is it's lack of calibration options, you just get a Sat-contrast-Sharpness control, but it is software calibration so you can always hope an update from BMD will adress this one day... maybe...

I accidentally came across this monitor online and couldn't believe it. An SDI 1080p screen at my perfect size of 17 inches meant I had to buy it.

Upon receiving it I hooked it up to my HD-SDI port on my capture card and played through some footage. I was also viewing the same footage on a pro JVC monitor and an inexpensive Benq computer monitor. The Smartview failed miserably.

The picture was so blue it was inexcusable. This wasn't adjustable in the software. The backlight was also noisy if not on 100% brightness. The image would occasionally pulse, especially with text on a black background.

This isn't slightly out, it's noticeable from a mile off. My very cheap computer monitor was more accurate.

                      Great idea, badly executed.

I had high hopes for this monitor and was looking to use this as an inexpensive color match monitor.

The price for a monitor with this level of connectivity is really good and the monitor is very compact and easy to setup and use. You do however need a PC or Mac to change settings because there are no button on the monitor at all. Not even a power button. ???

When testing this monitor side my side with a Sony LCD match monitor and a scope, my hopes were immediately dashed... The color accuracy of the SmartView was dismal in comparison to the Sony... The image has a very noticeable blue case to it and has no controls to correct it that I could find.

Other things I didn't like about it are. the highlights tend to blow out no mater how much I played with the limited controls I was given. Brightness, Contrast are Saturation are the only controls I found in the remote software. I also noted that when I viewed a grey scale ramp test pattern, I could see horrible banding. Even the image quality on my 6 year old MacBook Pro looks more accurate... :(

I'm going to say that this monitor is not a good choice for judging image quality or color.

Oh the viewing angles are not as good as I had hoped ether.

Comments about Blackmagic Design 17" SmartView HD Studio Monitor:

                          Awesome monitor,
Only Complaint is that there arent any buttons,
                          Everything is controlled via mac/pc.

Would have wanted at least a power switch.
