The 82mm 82mm Pro 1 Digital Neutral Density 64x Filter from Hoya is an ultra thin filter that permits you to shoot and create images that would not ordinarily be possible to capture. This filter effectively reduces your ISO by 1/64 (6 stops). This means that a shot normally taken at 1/500 sec @ f/11 can be shot at f/11 at 1/8th second. Designed with the outdoor shooter in mind, this filter helps reduce the amount of light entering the lens. This translates into the use of wider apertures and, thereby, permits the photographer to have more control over his depth of field. This is especially useful when shooting outdoor portraits when you wish to establish more of a separation between subject and background. The result will be a sharp, clear subject with a soft background. The ultimate value of this filter is its ability to allow you to use high speed ISOs under bright light conditions.

This effect can be used to create even more exciting images such as the "whooshing" effect of a mountain stream or the chaos of city traffic where one car appears to blend into the other. The operative effect is to enhance movement within the shot.

In order to provide the photo industry with a better made filter, Hoya created their multi-coated line of filters. These filters have a minimum of 3-layer coating system (front and back) that minimizes reflections off the filter's glass with the average being about 1-2%. In other words, Hoya states that approximately 98-99% of the light striking the filter will pass through the glass, and depending on the type of filter, into the camera lens and onto the film or digital sensor. During the manufacturing process these layers of anti-reflective coating are bonded to the surface of the glass in a furnace at a temperature of up to 800°F.

The almite filter ring is special manufactured to withstand the effects of corrosion. Hoya prefers to use aluminum filter rings since they believe that aluminum will "give" a bit if your lens accidentally bangs into another object and not, as with brass rings, remain completely rigid and transfer the brunt of the impact to the optic itself. The ring itself is knurled to make it easier to install and remove the filter from your lens - a clever innovation. As an added benefit, the plastic storage case that the filter is packed in has been UV protected. This will help extend the life of the filter.

Hoya optical glass has been around since 1941 and is world recognized for its superiority in the fields of not only photography but advanced optics such as electro-optics, photonics, vision care, health care and crystal products.

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed ISOs (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Comments about Hoya 82mm Pro 1 Digital Neutral Density 64x Filter (6 stops):

I use this filter for motion blur of water/ocean shots. It is a decent built and has a strong ring. This is a fun filter and it does what it says. The 6 stops seem to be enough for my purposes (and budget). I use it over a UV filter without issue. B&W are better quality in general but the Hoya are good quality for the price point. B&H recommended the Sensei Step-Up Ring and I use with different lenses. I agree with another review that when you need to recompose the filter had to be removed (but this is not a product issue).

Comments about Hoya 82mm Pro 1 Digital Neutral Density 64x Filter (6 stops):

I bought this for my Canon 16-35 which has a 82mm front opening. It is ultra thin and I have had no vignetting issues at all. The extra 6 stops are great for daytime long exp up to about 5 minutes or so. (Clouds and water motion are great) This is a well made filter, though it is glass so be careful. It comes with its own hard carrying case. The only drawback that I found is that every time I needed to recompose I had to remove the filter to see, and then reinstall it. Other than that, this a excellent product.

This filter works wonders in broad daylight, I have a personal requirement of at least 8 seconds when shooting water falls but in bright light my hoya 3 stop on top of my polarizer doesn't cut it, this filter gets the job done. Although you have to compose before screwing it on which may cause a problem if you focus will be affected.

I use this filter for shooting external-landscape motives. This filter is not strong enough to give me the option to leave my shutter open for too long on the middle of the day, but still is great for when the sun is low or in situations when the light is not strong and I want to add a good blur effect.

I took the plunge with a 24-70L II and found that I couldn't take the shots I wanted with out a filter. This 6 stop Hoya filter allows me to take far longer shots resulting in creamy water falls as well as shallow DOF on bright days. Great product for the price.

Use it for motion blur (clouds, water falls and star trails). Although is not a B+W quality it is very good built and has strong ring. Nevertheless, optical quality is very very good. The reason for the 4 stars is because is not as good as B+W build/glass Quality.

This is a fun filter. It does what it says and is pretty good quality, certainly good enough for me as I must admit I use the 9 stop ND filter I have more often.

If you don't have a ND filter and think you want one, than get it. They are really fun and just give more options in bright light. I have a 1.2 lens that I simply can't shoot wide open in bright sun but I can with this. Focusing is no issue and I personally just put it over my UV filter and put up with the minimal vignetting or remove with lightroom.

I purchased this filter for my automotive rig for doing motion pictures in full sun. First shoot it worked perfect. Exactly what I needed.

Comments about Hoya 82mm Pro 1 Digital Neutral Density 64x Filter (6 stops):

I tried this Hoya Pro 1 Digital because my preferred filter supplier, B+W, doesn't make a strong ND in 82mm (the filter size for my largest lenses); I use step-up rings for smaller lenses. The Hoya is multicoated and considerably less expensive than the B+W at sizes where both are available.

I measured an actual density of 5.85 stops, within 1/6 stop of the nominal 6 stop rating -- the difference is in the noise.

I expected a relatively strong color cast for a ND filter this strong, but was surprised at how low it was -- a little blue and a little green, but easy to adjust away. You might not even notice it for non-critical applications.

Filter is quite thin, which should eliminate vignetting on wide angle lenses, and make it more workable stacked with a polarizer, which will give you 2 more stops of ND.

This filter will get you down to reasonably slow shutter speeds: 1/2 to 1 second in full sun at f/16, ISO 100, for motion blur (especially with water).

My Canon EOS 5D MK II had no trouble auto-focusing (at least in moderate outdoor light) through the filter, and live view was completely usable.

I wish Hoya made a 10 stop ND for extra long exposures (8 to 16 seconds).
