Used to mount Atomos Ninja 2 video recorder to DSLR.
Doesn't hold tightenough for weight of Ninja. Ninja flops when camera tilts too far forward or back.

Was listed as an alternative to the Manfrotto 492 LCD. Used to replace the Lite Panels OEM ball head shoe mount. Vello product felt cheap and poorly constructed. In short, not a professional solution and not an alternative to the Manfrotto 492 LCD.

Comments about Vello Multi-Function Ball Head with Removable Bottom Shoe Mount:
I'm a professional videographer and I bought this to replace the default multi-directional joint that came with my LED light.
This product was taller than I expected. It performed well, but I found it heavy and the lock screw doesn't have a good feel when you lock it into position... like metal grinding against metal. And there is no "range" in the tightness. Only: loosy all over the place; Or: lock dead hard so it don't move! The upper body also has a tendency to unscrew from it's shoe, so you kind of have to over tighten it so it stays in place... not something I like doing.
Cautionary tale:
A few weeks after I started using it, I dropped my camera (that never happens to me) over a distance of a feet or two. I had the habit of laying down the lamp at a 90 degree angle, facing down, when carrying. BAD IDEA! The ball head acted as a lever and with little force, it bent the receiver shoe on my camera. It also damaged the ball head. Needless to say, I'm leaving my lamp in the upright position from now on.

I use this to mount my field monitor. It's fine for the cost, but it's not rock solid. If you mounting anything heavier than a small monitor I'd keep looking. I'm not sure this will last longer than a year of regular use.

Comments about Vello Multi-Function Ball Head with Removable Bottom Shoe Mount:
I bought this to mount a compact point-and-shoot camera that shoots video on top of my DSLR. The head is rated for up tp 4lbs but the problem I ran into with my 2lb camera is the torque required to tighten the ball head in place. I'm worried that over time I'll be stripping the screw but I can't fault Vello for something I think I might happen.

Comments about Vello Multi-Function Ball Head with Removable Bottom Shoe Mount:
I bought this to use as a monitor mount on my DSLR. The top thread connected to the monitor just fine and secured it tightly enough. The hot-shoe mount also can be secured tightly. The problem is ball head which uses one thread to secure both the tilt of the ball and the swivel on the bottom. Rather than just letting the ball swivel, the bottom mount comes lose. This creates a bit of a challenge when trying to use the ball head angler. While everything can be secured, it just becomes more of a challenge then it should.

Comments about Vello Multi-Function Ball Head with Removable Bottom Shoe Mount:
Everything about the construction says well made for the price, except for the most important part, the knob and screw that tightens this puppy up. I can't torque it down enough to hold a 600EX in place. I have solved the problem under my own terms, and now this thing is a diamond in the ruff. So much so that I am buying two more. I'm only rating a three, but it could easily be a five if I didn't have to fix the absolute obvious.

I use this on a Manfrotto Macro flash bracket and it allows me to position the flashes in just about any position. Plenty sturdy enough for the weight of my EX II's
