The 3 Legged Thing X4 Eric 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod with AirHed 1 Ball Head (Black) is an extremely lightweight, versatile support system for any point & shoot, film, or DSLR camera. Supporting up to 16.7 lb as a system, the tripod & head together weigh only 3.9 lb.

The handsome black tripod features a leg that detaches from the rest of the tripod to become a monopod, and the tall center column can be removed and changed out for the included 3.9" "stubby" center column for low-angle shooting. With its 4-section legs and 2-section center column fully extended, the X4 Eric & AirHed 1 reaches a generous maximum height of 85".

Leg angles can be set at three different positions; at their widest and with the column removed, the top of the tripod chassis sits only 5.3" from the ground (with the head attached, that figure climbs to 9.2"). The leg angles can be set independently to support stable shooting on uneven surfaces. When it's time to transport or store the X4 Eric with the AirHed 1 attached, the legs fold upward 180° so that the feet reach to the top of the head to form a tight little package (19.7" long).

The aircraft-grade T6061 magnesium AH1 head features a robust knurled knob that operates the Arca-style quick-release clamp. The clamp is designed so that the release knob sits under the lens, making it easier to mount, with more finger clearance. Additional knurled knobs manipulate the black ball head's pan lock and ball/tilt lock. The pan-lock knob features an inset tension control that affects the play of the ball's movement.

The included quick-release plate, also magnesium, is compatible with BlackRapid's R-Strap camera slings, by way of its FastenR-T1 camera screw. The 1/4"-20 camera screw's flip-up D-ring allows you to tighten it to your camera easily. This ring allows you to attach your camera to an R-Strap and quickly move it from around your neck or shoulder to the AirHed 1 without removing the sling.

Constructed of eight-core Stealth Carbon Fiber, the 26mm (upper section diameter) legs offer excellent lateral and torsional strength
Magnesium alloy construction of tripod chassis, head, and plate for lightweight strength
Grub screw in the wide mounting plate enables extremely steadfast connection with the head
Spirit level on tripod chassis, and two bubble levels on the rear of the head's quick-release assembly for precise leveling
Smooth-glide leg catches
Leg angles can be set independently at 23°, 55°, and 80°
Spring hook for hanging a ballast for extra stability in windy conditions
Double-section rapid center column is removable and reversible. Also included is a short center column (3.9"), which facilitates shooting from extremely low angles (minimum height is 5.3")
Feet can be unscrewed and interchanged (extra feet not included)
90° slot on head for portrait orientation

I've been a photographer for years and this is, by far, the best tripod have ever used!!I have gone through a number of tripods and borrowed a number of them as well (including Manfrotto, Gitzo , and Induro), and none of them have impressed me as much as the 3 legged thing X4 Eric!! It is Light enough that i can now take it with me everywhere in case the chance arrives for some macro photography, or a great landscape shot. The carbon Fiber is highly durable, as I discovered during a rough-and-tumble field test. The twist locks are very secure, providing a very stable platform for any type of photography. The independent 3-angle legs allow for amazing flexibility in getting the camera to the exact height needed for various shots. The invertible adjustable center column covers anything the legs can't do on their own. The height without the center column extended puts my 60D right at eye level (I'm 6'0". With the center column fully extended, it makes an excellent stand for off-camera flash. The ability to remove the leg and convert it to a monopod makes this a handy tool for travel and city shooting. One of the best features of this tripod is that it isn't Black!! The color selections naturally blend into almost any natural landscape, making it perfect for close-encounter animal photography. Even the case is impressive, in that most tripods don't come with one and the ones that due tend to have a rather pathetic drawstring sack that serves little purpose. The bag provided by 3LT is well padded, well designed, and in keeping with their stylish motif. Even the Ball head is surprisingly good. I have not tried this tripod with anything longer that 200mm, but some of the angles and positions I have set up in are definitely a test for most ball heads. There is no creep when locking the ball into place and once locked down, it doesn't move. I won't say that this is the greatest ball head I have ever used, but the design, quality, and precision of this head far surpasses any other head I have seen in this price range. I have only had the tripod for a few weeks, but I have yet to thing of an arrangement or be caught by a shooting situation that this tripod can not accommodate. I am exceptionally happy with this tripod. I will gladly recommend this product to anyone! 3LT - you have a customer for life!!

There are great things about this tripod: its weight, its sense of humor(!), its style, its rugged, padded case. But ultimately I found it doubtful: the first one I received with the head falling off the legs--and a chunk of cross-threaded, sheered-off threads fell out too. I tried to screw the head back on, but with the threads banged up, I let it be. The head also rotated only with difficulty. B&H replaced it with their usual efficiency, but the replacement also panned only with great resistance, straining the plastic locks on the legs. One of the legs also pivoted on its own, an irritation fixed by tightening the leg bolt with supplied allen wrench. I recently purchased a Vanguard tripod and a BBH-100 head, which is far heavier than the Eric but also, despite its lowly name, far more refined, reliable, and generally rock-solid. Ultimately, I decided the Eric was too iffy to trust with this kind of money invested and sent it back. I still think, as much as I wanted to like the Eric, it would not prove reliable in the long run, a minimal expectation for a nearly [$]tripod.

Comments about X4 Eric 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod with AirHed 1 Ball Head (Black):

Took a chance on this 3LT Eric as my first tripod. The head had a stripped plate screw (from assembly), and 3LT promptly replaced the head. Quick response from the 3LT crew (even though they are overseas). I like the adjustability, and serviceability of this unit (completely disassembles). Legs are sturdy, yet light weight. Barrel locks (which I was concerned about) are rock solid when tightened. Head is smooth and holds my 7D +70-200L solidly. Unit also comes with a great padded/armored case (w/sling), which has a zippered storage pocket built into the lid.Ultimately, time will tell on this one. But, my initial impression is completely positive. Customer service team stands behind their product. Will update review, as needed.

I read the reviews some were not good. I took the chance and bought one.
Best chance I took Very stable and the legs lock very tight whit just a small
turn of the leg locks. I use it a lot with just the legs and no center column on
it. Great hight with column extended, up to 85 inches. Best of the lite tripods.
.Plus you get a monopod by just unscrewing one leg.

Comments about X4 Eric 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod with AirHed 1 Ball Head (Black):

This is a fantastic tripod. I was looking for something that was light and compact as well as sturdy and could support a heavy camera/lens combo. 3 Legged Thing delivered! I chose this one over the others because it is compatible with the BlackRapid strap system. Not having to unscrew the release plate to use the strap was a big selling point. When the tripod and BlackRapid TR-1 fastner came in the mail, I was a little disapointed to find the TR-1 didn't work as it should. Apparently 3 Legged Thing had some compatibility issues when BR changed their design. All it took was one email and 3LT offered to send me a new release plate that had been redesigned to work! Excellent and quick customer service for a great product. It will liekly never replace my beefy Manfrotto for studio work, but I will never take that heavy tripod outside with me again. 3 Legged Thing is such a pleasure to hike or travel with. It weighs nothing! And comes with it's own carry case which is a pleasant bonus.

It holds my 5d MII with battery grip and L bracket securely. The pod a lot for the money compared to the main stream competiton. Carbon fiber, tripod/mono pod with nice ball head. I recommend this product.

Comments about X4 Eric 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod with AirHed 1 Ball Head (Black):

When I first took this tripod out of the box and then the case, silica gel beads started falling out out because the packet had broken, leaving a mess to clean up.The ball head had a sticky residue. It had been put together with too much lube. I don't know what kind of grease was used, but it wasn't a high quality one. I'm assuming that cold storage caused it to stiffen. As a result, the panning motion of the ball head was difficult to rotate. Give it a few hours, and it'll loosen up nicely. Alternatively, do yourself a favor and take apart the ball head, clean it well, and re-lube with your preferred grease.A set of screws and washers that secures one of legs to the spider (or I guess furniture as 3LT likes to call it) kept coming lose. Moving the leg up and down caused the screws to undo themselves. This can be remedied with a couple drops of blue Loctite to hold it tight and maintain tension. The angles that this tripod can be positioned is 23, 55, and 80 degrees. My old Manfrotto 055MF3 legs sat at 23 degrees as well, but because Eric is so light, the heavy ball head raised the center of balance, and I would've preferred a slightly wider stance at the tallest setting. I think later on, I want to ask 3LT to create a short center column or have the included extension tube have a bigger screw, so that I could the ball head and base (with a longer base to cover the spider screw completely) rest securely onto the spider ('furniture'), while being able to keep the spring loaded hook attached at the bottom. I don't have any really issues with the center column as is. I am 6'0" (183cm) tall, and at 23 degrees with the center column down, ball head, RRS L-plate, and Canon EOS 5D Mark II set at the horizontal position, the eyepiece is perfectly at eye level. I rest my camera bag on the hook, or if you find your bag too heavy, use bungee cord to help anchor the tripod via hook to your camera bag sitting on the ground. There's also an option stone bag for this tripod as well. The last thing I want to point out, is that I wish there was another notch to lock the 23 degree setting in. However, if you have set the tension and the stance when setting it up correctly, you won't have any worries about the legs folding in while moving positions.Overall, for [$], I can't complain. How many travel tripods are out there for people taller than 5'10 (177.8cm)? A few, but you'll be spending at least [$] for travel legs, and [$] for a travel ball head with a diameter large enough to securely support lenses shorter than 200mm. It is a great tripod for what it is. A solid, light-weight, versatile, fully self-serviceable tripod that was meant to be taken apart for self maintenance, which is the key for longevity. I can see myself using the detachable monopod often. Leg locks hold right. The ball head is amazing, and holds my Canon EOS 5D Mark II with Canon EF 50mm f1.2L USM or Canon EF 35mm f1.4L USM lens with ease. I just wish they provided a better finished end product like other companies.Must haves: blue Loctite, good grease, 3LT tripod spikes, stone bag or some sort of weight to increase stability.

Bought this as a gift for my photographer boyfriend. Very sturdy, yet lightweight. Many features and positional options. Has the ball-head but can also be used for quick and easy panoramic panning.

I'd never flet the need for a tripod until I began to explore long exposure photography. I need something to support a Canon 7D plus 70-200mm zoom.I chose this unit as my son has an earlier model "eddie", which I've admired. Now that it's arrived, I am impressed by the solid feel & flexibility of the ball head. The unit feels much lighter than I imagined & the carry case is great. B&H offers exceptional service - New York to Melbourne Australia in 4 days.

Arrived with one of the 3 bubble levels dry. Sent head back to b&h. Quick release is not that quick. They say it's for safty. On the good side goes high without center and folds small. It's also really light.

Showed up with one of the 3 bubble levels with no fluid. Sent the head back. The other thing is the quick release is not that quick. They say it's for extra safety but wish it just had a reguler one.
Other than that it's nice. Goes extra high, even without the center.

Comments about X4 Eric 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod with AirHed 1 Ball Head (Blue):

The construction is great and I haven't experienced any problems with camera shake as a result of this tripod. I've taken photos using this tripod on a fairly windy day and it stood up to the test. Not mad about my purchase at all!

I use this tripod with a Canon MKII 5D with attached battery grip and both a 24~70 2.8 and 70~200 2.8 lens. I use a Really Right Stuff L bracket to mount the setup on the tripod and it supports the weight with no problem.

I have a few different tripods, each one fills a specific need. I bought this one primarily as a travel tripod. It's perfect for that. It's incredibly light and sturdy. I couldn't find anything else on the market that had the height I needed and could also fold up so compactly. I've only used a couple times so far but feels well made. Maybe not as well made as a gitzo but it does more and cost less. I would recommend.

So far I've only used this tripod once outdoors, but the conditions were a good test for the sturdiness and performance of the 3LT Eric, ie, standing on a windy freeway overpass at night. I was very impressed with the photos, with only a couple of them showing any vibration. This could be rectified, though, by applying some weight to the spring-loaded hook at the bottom of the centre column. The lightness of the tripod with ballhead, coupled with the quiver it comes with, make this tripod easy to carry around, and setting up the tripod is as easy as pie. On top of this, the Airhed ballhead has simple controls that keep the camera absolutely still - I especially like the security of the quick release plate dial.
